Anyone have any positive experience with Mirena coil? All I can find online is horror stories!

I first had mine in about 1999. I had minor spotting for the first month, then no more bleeding. I had it removed in 2001 to try to get pregnant. I had 1 “period” and was pregnant.
New mirena after baby was born, had it replaced every 5 years, and am now using it as part of my HRT-I’m in my mid 50s now.

No side effects at all (have saved a fortune in sanpro!”), and would throughly recommend it based on my experience. My sister has had exactly the same experience

Love mine! I had my Mirena put in a year ago and after reading too many posts online I was terrified of side effects too - I suffered terrible acne as a teenager and was very scared that would return.. but it’s been great! I didn’t experience much pain at all on insertion, I had light spotting for about a month and then nothing. No pain, no periods, no bloating, no acne, no mood swings (beyond my usual ones!) , no thrush, nothing. I don’t know it’s there. I realise others have horrible side effects and not to minimise those at all, but my personal experience has been great.

Mine has been a lifesaver. Pretty painful to have it fitted. Take paracetamol or ibuprofen an hour before! But this only lasted a day. Crampy and a tiny bleed. But this doesn’t happen for all.

then since then for years it’s pretty much stopped my periods, I have very little PMT. Some very minor symptoms but soooooo much better. It’s also supposed to help with menopause as well. I’m on my second.

mine was due to not getting on with the pill. The implant made me go a bit mad. So now I have this. I had terrible periods and pain before as well.

I have endometriosis and the mirena has changed my life honestly. I have very minimal pain/bleeding, no PMS, no brain fog, no bloating. And I’ve not had any awful side effects like I had with the pill.

Also found it fab, had extremely heavy periods so had coil fitted and has made a huge difference.
Still get a light period roughly monthly but no other noticeable side effects

I hated mine and got it taken out. Terrible skin, put on 5 kilos in 3 months. Yuck.

I’ve had a series of Mirena coils for nearly 20 years. Had one episode of lost strings (sorted by a simple procedure), but otherwise no issues and no periods!

I'm on my 4th over a couple of decades, absolutely brilliant. I had some very bumpy hormonal episodes (mood swings, migraines) for a couple of weeks after the first 2 were put in, but absolutely worth it - no periods, stable moods, no PMS symptoms over many years. Now I'm into perimenopause the Mirena provides progesterone so I only need oestrogen patches for HRT.

Love mine. Went from horrendous debilitating flooding with anemia and fainting to no periods at all. I'd kiss the fucker if it wasn't so inaccessible

I have to admit it hurt like bollocks going in but it was totally worth it.

Life saver for me as I had awful flooding and lots of embarrassing incidents. Not had a period for 10 years, will be getting my third and final one inserted in a couple of months (I’m 51). Took a few months of light discharge and bloating/breast tenderness to settle down but plain sailing thereafter and no problem with taking out and putting in new one. I’m on hrt now and it means I only need to add in the oestrogen spray.

@Empty000 i had mine due to erratic periods in peri menopause. No bleeding for 3 years. When I had it removed I was officially in a menopause. I never had any problems with it. Best thing I ever did

How did they retrieve the strings? Mine are lost, but the coil is in position so I've been told they'll leave it until it needs changing, but was given no indication of how they might do this!

Mine has been amazing, I was also really worried but had no side effects. Went from years of low iron and regular flooding to one very light period (maybe 10-20% of normal), a few months of slight spotting for a few days a month, then nothing since.

I had my first in my mid-40s when my periods went haywire and heavy during perimenopause. It took a few months to settle down completely but I never had another period so it was brilliant. I got it out at 52, to find I'd gone through menopause without realising, so that was good.

I got my second one in at 59 as the progesterone component of HRT. It's all good, I'm a big fan of the Mirena.

my GP tried with some tool or other but I’m to go to the hospital for an ultrasound guided removal (and replacement). Big fan of mine too.

Mine is both positive and negative. I had two coils fitted around about 5/6 years ago. Both fell out and I then suffered with very heavy periods practically bled for a year. I was sent to a specialist who told me I should never had the coils in the first place as I had fibroids and this was the reason the coils both fell out. I underwent surgery to remove the fibroids the surgeon suggested she inserted a coil after fibroids were removed. I was very reluctant due to the previous issues however she reassured me. Also I was under general so it was a lot easier.

It’s the best thing I had done, early on had little bleeds but not had any now for 4 years. Plus been told I can carry on with it past 5 years to get me through the menopause.

I had one fitted, it stopped the bleeds, but not the PMT. For lots of women it stops the uterus lining thickening but doesn't stop the hormone cycle so if you are using it for PMT be mindful it may not be successful.

Am a big fan of Mirena. I had my first about 15 years ago, been an absolute lifesaver. On my 3rd now. I would totally recommend it. I looked at the horror stories on Google the night before I had my first one fitted- not a good idea!! Just have some paracetamol before it getting fitted, but it's not that bad.

After the first one I did have heavy bleeding initially but since then hardly anything. I was really unwell from prolonged heavy periods.

After being diagnosed with endometriosis at 19, had multiple operations. At 33 I had one fitted after my last surgery 15 years ago.

It’s changed my life, no surgery’s since and just had my third fitted and started HRT.

Yes for me it really hurt for removal and replacing - I swore very loudly. It’s only for a second though. Then had minor cramping. I recommend taking painkillers just before.

I have put on weight, not lots but it’s so worth it to live a normal life , pain free and period free.

The first one took around 6 months to fully settle, both replacements have been fine and nothing like the first one.

Love mine too; I'm on my third, and even the fitting of it was painless last time round (all credit to the absolutely brilliant specialist nurse who does them at our GP). No negatives at all and minimal bleeds - what's not to like.

I've had 3 and have not had a period in decades. I think it took a couple of months to settle down but it was very much fit and forget for me.

You can keep it for 8 years if it's not for contraception

I am not even sure where I am with mine. Had it fitted aged about 48 as was having intermittent heavy periods (probably pre-meno) but they were awful, after fitting (which I cannot remember overly hurting) then did not get many periods or were light until 50, then they just stopped, absolutely. Never got any real symptoms of menopause either. Not sure if it is still there. Not sure if I was just lucky on the menopause front either or whether it helped. So, for my age group (wants no more children, helps regulate periods), I definitely think it helped.

my gynaecologist has recommended it to try to help with my endo, heavy periods & lots of pain. I googled it & it’s just horror story after horror story!

I know it’s all trial & error & I don’t know how my body will respond but hearing people loving it is encouraging 🙂
