I havent ever posted on here despite having been a member for a while, but i feel so shocked i just wanted to see if anyone could give me any advice. I m a 40 yr old mother of 2 girls 4 and 8, whose own mother died from breast cancer when she was 43, I had a mammogram 2 wks ago as family history screening, and was recalled today for a core biopsy and told i will need surgery and radiotherapy. I have talked briefly to one of my sisters and a long distance friend but do not want to talk to anyone close by in case it gets back to my daughters before I tell them myself.I have to see the surgeon next thurs and find out what / when things will happen. Can anyone help ? I have looked at some previous threads and at a couple of sites. Thanks.

Hi Waily,
How are you feeling? Mum is ok again now - the symptoms lasted about 5 days this time.

waily · 22/05/2005 13:32

hi ,i m ok amynixmum, thanks for asking, a bit shocked by the press coverage of kylie minogue, a lot of it is inaccurate and insensitive to people with breast cancer, especially those with youngish children who possibly dont need to hear some of the survival statistics,in my opinion at least ! I have my next chemo on weds, my hair is still with me,I survived my youngest's birthday party yesterday, with 39 kids, indulgent mum or what !Just hope the next chemo will be as bearable as the last !

39 kids - wow! I take my hat off to you waily!

Good luck for next week.

dolally · 09/06/2005 08:51

Thinking of you Waily... what a time you're going through. Lots of love to you.

jambo1707 · 09/06/2005 20:51

Did i read right or am I goig mad

Waily do you have 39 kids???

waily · 09/06/2005 21:55

no i dont have 39 kids !!!!! my youngest had 39 kids at her birthday party which during my chemo was quite a lot ! I d not known whether to put any more messages on here but thought i ought to at least clear up that misunderstanding !I m ok, 2 chemos down , 4 to go,now coping with a recent diagnosis of being HER2+++, which is a particularly agressive kind of cancer with a not particularly good prognosis a lot of the time. However there is a drug called herceptin that in recent trials has shown promising results. this drug is only currently licensed for secondaries, ie when bluntly speaking a patient is no longer curable. It is possible to get the drug privately at a cost of 20 - 30 000£ altho i havent found anyone to prescribe it yet, or quite worked out how we will fund it. Some of the women who post on the breast cancer care website, where i am a member and where i ve received loads of advice and support, are currently working out ways of making the public aware of how N I C E, the govt agency who license new drugs ,is dragging its heels over this and other cancer treatments and how many women / mothers may lose their lives unnecessarily. If anyone is interested in emailing their mp or N I C E please email me if you need any more info, i could write pages !Anyway thanks for reading this and hope the other women with breast cancer who have posted on here or whose daughters /friends have posted are doing ok.

Waily, I'm glad you're doing okay so far. I've heard of herceptin and the good results the Dr's have had with it. I think it's scandalous that women are having to fight to get the drugs they need. There was a woman on Jeremy Vine (Radio 2) today and I think she was having trouble getting hold of it, as well, though I didn't hear much of the interview.

hewlettsdaughter · 10/06/2005 09:09

Hi waily, good to hear from you. You sound like you've come a long way since your first post. It's great you've found others on the breast cancer care website to talk to, too.

I have this thread on my watch list so it's always nice to hear how you're doing (but you can always start a new thread title if you don't want to keep adding to this one).

jambo1707 · 10/06/2005 11:05

Waily

Glad to hear you are doing ok, good luck with the next chemo session hun
