Should my daughter go to A&E for brief vision and hearing loss?

My 18 yr old dd has had a few experiences of momentarily loosing eyesight and hearing. She does not loose consciousness but feels very week after. Of the three times she has gone to A&E, they say she is fine with stats and hears nothing again and G.P runs bloods, nothing wrong. Should she go to A&E tonight to rule out stroke ? No history of stroke, no contraception. Sweats profusely, painful periods.

My goodness, in my stress I have forgotten to say this has happened again tonight. She was sat when this happened and still is. She feels a bit dizzy, she does not know why as no obvious cause beforehand.

No specialist knowledge but my instinct is yes I think she should - and explain it’s a pattern so they may need to do different tests. Her body’s sending a signal - better to check it out even though it’s tedious going to A&E.

Yes to a&e but if you get nowhere look at jess's rule and keep going back to gp she needs a referral to a neurologist. Good luck

If nothing has been found 3 times before and the presentation is the same are they likely to find anything different this time ? She needs a neurology referral and possibly an optician check as vision is affected?

Not an expert in any way but I would go to the opticians too. And GP?

I would want her to see a neurologist and rule out anything worrying. It could be something like migraine but need to rule out other things first.

Yes to neurologist ,but no to A&E - Assuming her vision and hearing has returned A&E likely not the best place. But I'd definitely want a neurologist appointment just to rule out anything beyond migraines (I work within neurosciences so am aware that sometimes these symptoms can be attributed to common occurrences, sometimes not). As it's happened multiple times I'd definitely be approaching a GP promptly to ask for a referral to a neurologist as they're best placed to investigate. If she loses sight and vision in the interim then maybe I'd consider A&E during an episode but it's also not necessarily imminently life threatening and A&E are so overwhelmed as it is. But obviously none of us here know your daughter or her full history so only a medical professional seeing her can make an accurate call re investigation or treatment. Best of luck as I know it must be worrying for you both.

Not sure re hearing but I went to
optician after waking up with extreme blurred vision…I was sent to hospital and underwent MRI for potential tumour. Get it checked out.

Back to GP to insist on neurology referral. Going to A&E won’t fast track this process, particularly after 5pm as only the on-call neuro will be in attendance. Also as it’s something recurrent, they will refer back to GP anyway.

Any tingling or pins and needles in her arms or legs? Any numbness?
She needs to be investigated- a high contrast MRI for starters.

Vasovagel syncope?

She has tingling in feet often .No numbness. Her blood despite having vitamin d deficiency and b12 in past have been well within normal range. Feels like she has a muggy head after fir a while and then is okay. I'd say this has happened 3 times a year for last couple of years . She had a yearly optician test ,
not long ago, all okay

It used to be called “petit mal”. I think there’s a more modern name now though.

I would probably not go to A&E now, they are likely to do exactly the same as they have the other times. I would however go to GP and push for an urgent neurological referral because it sounds suspiciously like either some form of seizure or a neurological problem which probably requires neurology or seizure specialist. I would also think no driving until she has more insight into the problem.

Yes she should. This needs both cardiac/vascular investigation and neurological.
They sound awfully like fainting spells or absence seizures.

Also, in case she is fobbed off EVERY time one happens she should call 111 to report it and jot down the symptoms, if she lost time, if she fell & hurt herself …each report gets added to her medical records and a journal can be started to show whether there is a pattern and if it’s getting more frequent or going on longer or getting worse.

You don’t know it’s not an emergency. There could be some kind of blood clot on the brain that is causing vascular issues that are then causing seizure like symptoms. Bloodclots on the brain can suddenly burst and cause death.

Could be focal seizures. She needs to get her GP to refer her to a Neurologist.

It sounds like seizure. I would ask for neurology. Gp referral a and e probably won't do much

If she is otherwise healthy, she deserves answers before she starts to live independently where you aren’t there when it happens. Neurology referral is important (albeit slow)

Could they be focal seizures?

Could be focal awareness seizure. GP dismissed mine until I had a loss of consciousness and went to A&E. Even they were dismissive 🤷‍♀️ but at that point my GP took it seriously and I was eventually diagnosed w temporal lobe epilepsy and medicated. These things can be really subtle but they need to be looked at. Bloods won’t show anything and nor will stats.
