Worried about infection from rats

Yesterday I cleared out the bins that tenants had left at my property. Seven wheelie bins of unbagged food waste. There were rats in the bins. I’m freaking out I’ll get ill now. What should I do?

I assume you washed your hands after and didn’t lick the bins?

Were the rats in the house or the outside wheelie bins?

Did you have rubber gloves on, did you wash your hands after, did a rat bite you.

Rats are everywhere all the time. Aren’t they only a danger if they bite?

You won’t get sick from inhaling anything. Think of all the bins we walk past in public every day, you wouldn’t think twice about breathing near them. If you wore gloves and washed your hands you’ll be absolutely fine.

This is clearly somebody suffering from a touch of health anxiety can the barbed comments stop? She just needs firm reassurance and that’s it.

Sorry, but inhaling dried particles of rat fèces or urine is exactly how you get hanta virus and rat lung worm. Op wasn’t just walking past closed bins, she was cleaning them which means disturbing waste matter and potentially making it airborne.

If by firm reassurance you mean lies and by barbed comments you mean to call truth lies then no why should I stop?

It’s a rational concern, ignore the yahoos calling it health anxiety. Go and get tested.

OP do you feel well? From your description it sounds like you are going to be absolutely fine. Perhaps call 111 if you continue to be concerned and hopefully thru will put your mind at rest.

Will a GP test for such a thing?

There have been 11 confirmed cases of Seoul hantavirus in the UK since 2012, so far less than 1 a year. Think of all the homeless people sleeping where rats are, and people messing around with bins in the way you have OP. It’s very very unlikely.
