Worried about a line on my thumbnail before dermatologist appointment

Does anyone have or had this line on a thumbnail before please? I'm scared I'm due to see a dermatologist Monday but wanted to ask for opinion please.

Skin cancer which he needed removing but all was clear afterwards and no further treatment.

May I ask where the skin cancer was detected and was it on the thumbnail like mine is with lines down it? X

No, it wasn't melanoma of the nail.

my MIL has a basal carcinoma that appeared on her nose out of the blue.

she had it removed and taken a sample of the remaining skin for biopsy and got results the week after (this is SW London)

it was traumatic though, because they said to her it would take weeks and they would only call her earlier if it was bad news.

so someone calls her and says. you have a phone appointment with the dermatologist tomorrow.

she obviously panicked and cried all morning.

anyway, she had to go the the GP that afternoon to get her stitches removed and they couldn’t remove them all so had to go back to the surgeon that did the procedure at the hospital. she mentioned the call and he checked her records and it had come back clear.

moral of the story, however hard it may be, please don’t draw any conclusions until you actually hear back from the doctor themselves.

Hi, sorry for the late reply. The line was dark and it ended up as a split thumbnail. It was there for about a year I think

Hi, aw bless you, did it look like mine at all? X

@Daringbird I was one of the rare people that has this and it was melanoma, however it’s a rare form. Mine was 1A and was treated with only surgery and I am fine. I’m not saying this to worry you but even if it is melanoma it will probably all still be ok, and even later stages of diagnosis, the treatment has come on loads. It’s great you have had it checked.

My advice after the biopsy if they remove your nail is do rest afterwards and don’t use your hand too much - just let it heal and pain will be fine. I had to have a couple and did way too much after the first one so it hurt, second one I was much more careful and pain was negligible.

Also did the dermatologist that looked at it on the dermascope say it looked suspicious or benign? Xx

@Daringbirdmine was thinner but started that colour and got darker. So the change was also relevant I believe. First time I was told it didn’t look suspicious and was seen every three months and eventually biopsied. They did try to discharge me after 6 months saying it was fine (covid!) but I advocated for myself (thankfully).

Yes she had her appointment for results and was told everything was clear! No cancer, not even fungal. So for her it was just a naturally occurring thing with no concerning cause. Her nail bed is also healing very well and is starting to grow a new nail.
