Thinking of having one but wondering what it is like to have one fitted. Advice please!

I had the Mirena coil fitted last Friday and it was v. painful. I had bad period type cramps for the rest of the day and felt really tired and wrung-out. But I felt much better on Saturday and my bleeding has just about stopped now - just some light spotting.

I'm hoping that my periods stop in the not-too-distant future and that I don't suffer the possible side-effects of weight gain, bloating and mood-swings, but my GP has promised me she'll take it out if it doesn't agree with me.

i got the mirena after resisting for years because I had a copper 7 eons ago before children and it was horrendous. mirena as you gals said was bit uncomfy to fit, period pains for few days afterwards, but then dribble dribble bleeding for weeks after. And not even proper, just like the start of a period all the blinkin time, messing up me schedules sumthin chronic. Got no idea now what sort of cycle I have, apparently should settle in few months....but then my emotionals all over the place just now so could be that too, sorry if TMI.

Bit more info, i asked about the dose because the pill (even mini) made me decidely depressed, only realise when I cam off it. Its so low really because it doesn't have to go into your bloodstream to work, its something like 40 times lower than the smallest pill dose, don't quote me to a medic on that but you get the gist.

I have the mirena coil fitted this year and so did 5 of my friends. The level of discomfort suffered on insertion varied hugely. I found it little more uncomfortable than having a smear but the way the nurse and doctor comforted me made me think that it might be much worse! My friend (who has not had children) found the insertion horrendous and nearly fainted. But the other friends who have had children found it momentarily painful but the pain went quite quickly.

Also, the bleeding varied between us. 3 do not have periods at all now. I still have a monthly period - it is lighter but goes on for longer. I have noticed no other side effects and love being able to have a worry free bonk!

Are you on commission Ags- 5 friends too! Only joking, no offence. Can I ask something rather indelicate of you ladies on this thread- or is that a bump? Can anyones partner - ahem- feel the appliance on his anatomy during sex? Am I allowed to say that? Sorry if I offend anyone

Amphibimum · 19/06/2008 01:20

i see your name and think 'uh-huh-huh' btw.

girlnextdoor · 19/06/2008 07:33

I had a coil fitted years ago- it was not a good experience overall. I found insertion painful- dr had problems getting it in- and I have had 2 kids. he started with one coil, then had to swap for another design ( both copper, not Mirena).

I bled constantly for 3 weeks- which included a normal period in that time- and when i went to have it checked at family planning, they said it had started to come out and was inm y cervix- causing bleeding. they whipp d it out- that didn't hurt much at all.

girlshookup · 19/06/2008 15:00

Yes I think that as well when I see my name amphibimum and.. confess.. i even sing it in my head, which is completely weird becos I'm not a major elvis fan or anything . But I am shook up at the mo, so it kind of fits

allytjd · 19/06/2008 21:58

I can top your mirena insertion stories, the doc nicked my cervix with the inserter thingy, cue audible rush of blood forming puddle on floor and mild panic from doc and nurse. The doc had to put (heavy ) pressure on my cervix with a swab for about 15 mins - horrible! However no periods since but have struggled with depression over the past year and mild acne, also had to have a previous mirena removed quickly as it made my bbreast milk dry up almost overnight to the great distress of me and DS3, came back as soon as mirena out!

Ags · 19/06/2008 23:45

Lol, girlshookup! Unfortunately no commission but lots of friends who have had their last baby! And no, my dh could not feel it although he tried to! (TMI!)

kiddiz · 20/06/2008 00:40

I had a copper coil. Not too bad being put in. I had it fitted at fpc. I bled heavily for about 4 weeks and then more or less constant bleeding or spotting the whole time I had it. It was removed under ga while I was being sterilised so was definately not a form of contraception that suited me. I'm in my 40s with three dcs though and definately don't want more so being sterilised was the best thing for me.

MamaFeckinMia · 20/06/2008 00:45

I had the mirena fitted about eight months ago. I had previously been on

NormaStanleyFletcher · 20/06/2008 00:49

I got pregnant with the coil in place (mirena)

MamaFeckinMia · 20/06/2008 01:06

Oh Fook!

NormaStanleyFletcher · 20/06/2008 01:17

Oh yes and as I had no periods, no morning sickness and well anything, I went to the doctor with weight gain to find that 19 weeks pregnant was the answer

the scan when they tried to find it was fun though

as was the comments from the midwife, consultant and sho

the fact that I had drunk and smoked throught the first half of a pg was less good
