Sore throat/illness lingering for 3 weeks

Mumssupportingmums · 11/03/2026 07:58

I have had this sore throat / been unwell for nearly 3 weeks and wondering if anyone has had anything similar.

Started as a really bad cold, turned into a sore throat and a cough. Generally I am slowly getting better, but with my throat it will like go for two days and then come back again really painful on the other side, then repeat, like settle for a day or two and then come back.

Also having daily headaches and no energy - just don’t feel myself at all.

I’m sick of taking pain killers now and tried antibiotics twice after two visits to GP. I’m just wondering if anything had anything similar really!?

Dh has had this for three weeks and I’m now starting with it. The GP told him it was viral so wouldn’t give antibiotics. He’s been really poorly with it. So no answers here but I sympathise as it’s rotten.

namechange62 · 11/03/2026 08:33

Yep. 6 weeks for me now. I had some energy yesterday so did a bit of spring cleaning. Woken up today with... A sore throat.

Mumssupportingmums · 11/03/2026 08:37

@piscofrisco Sorry your DH has been so unwell! Hope it’s not as bad for you. Yes the antibiotics did nothing for me so probably viral!

@namechange62 6 weeks that’s brutal! Hope you get some relief soon. That’s like me random days of energy and being fine, then the next day no energy and sore throat flares!

Yes, and me. Very sore throat for weeks, constant cough, upset stomach, sore, red eyes, slight fever and so tired! I'm just regaining my strength now after 3 or 4 weeks (lost count!)
I'm managing to do things in little bursts of energy but it has taken a lot out of me.

Mumssupportingmums · 11/03/2026 09:43

@Kidsarekarma sorry to hear that! Yes same here I had the upset stomach too, lack of energy, sore throat, headaches. Hopefully you’re on the other end of it now.

We did a civid test which came back negative. But I do wonder…. Feel totally wiped out today.

Justtryingthis · 11/03/2026 10:10

Yep, me too! Been ill since beginning of February. 2 x antibiotics and still no better. Constant sore throat and cough. Really fed up but reassuring to hear it’s not just me…

CanaryLibra · 11/03/2026 10:13

I’m about 10 days into this, it’s awful. The cold is drying up but my throat is so sore and I’m exhausted.

I had a burst of energy yesterday so changed the bedsheets and hoovered our bedroom and it totally wiped me out for the rest of the day.

I’m self employed and client facing - I’ve cancelled so much work, it’s a huge loss of income.

PeppyAmberHedgehog · 11/03/2026 10:18

I've had a milder version. Sore throat comes back when I think I'm better - usually after exertion.

Moshalot · 11/03/2026 10:20

Yeah that's this year's viral delight. Everyone has had it here too, and it lasts much longer than your average cold. It does go away eventually though!

donotmissyourchancetoblow · 11/03/2026 10:23

Dp and I have both had it since the end of January I’ve lost my voice twice from coughing and just feel generally rubbish.
we’ve both had antibiotics this last week they haven’t helped DP all that much but I feel slightly better, still have 2 days to take.
it’s just draining. We’ve both tested for Covid a couple of times since we first started feeling unwell but always clear. I’d just like us both to stop coughing at this point.

Spittykityy · 11/03/2026 10:39

Yes, have this too, about 2 weeks now, the worst is the permanent headache.

TheJustJoker · 11/03/2026 10:54

Yep I’ve had it. Started 3 weeks ago today with a painful throat, then sore throat. Days 3 and 4 just a snotty head cold and on day 5 was almost gone. Days 6 returned with a vengeance and was off my legs. Almost shaken it off now but the fatigue and clogged head/chest was awful. But it will go away eventually-just in its own sweet time.

Look up NHS saline solution online, sorry couldn't get the link to work. Although it's aimed at sinuses it really helps with all ear, nose and throat infections. You might need to buy some cheap plastic syringes for best results. You can also try gargling with the solution.
This helped my throat problems which had been plaguing me for weeks.

angelcake20 · 11/03/2026 11:28

2.5 weeks here and still coughing and snotty. Keep thinking it’s improving and then we go back to square one. Did wonder if it was Covid as my reflux has come back (which doesn’t help the coughing). One of my husband’s clients said yesterday he’d been coughing for 8 weeks and I’m
prone to 100 day coughs so I’m not optimistic. No point in going to the GP as it won’t be bacterial (unless you get really bad obviously).

I bought a sinus rinse pack off Amazon the other day, it’s a bottle and the 30 sachets of the powder to mix in with cool boiled water, and I definitely feel like it has helped a little with the cold.

It’s the NeilMed sinus rinse if anyone is interested.

Kidsarekarma · 11/03/2026 12:13

Thank you @Mumssupportingmums Flowers, you too. Make sure you rest until you feel completely better as this bug comes back if you overdo things.

BlackSwan · 11/03/2026 12:48

I had a very sore throat on and off for weeks - had a couple of rounds of antibiotics/visited the ENT for the first time in my life... nothing seemed to shake it. Tests all came back negative. At my wits end. Then it just went away. I hope you shake it soon.

Mumssupportingmums · 11/03/2026 13:19

Thanks everyone! Nice to know I’m not alone in it. Just praying my DH and DS don’t get it! It’s brutal. It’s like my tonsils are playing tennis everyday going back and forth with pain! Then I think it’s better and BAM it’s back again. I do feel better I tried anitbitoics and that didn’t work so clearly viral but guess I just have to wait it out now!

Thats useful to know. The NHS recipe is salt and bicarbonate of soda with water, so it's easy to get the ingredients in the supermarket.
Hope everyone feels better soon, sore throats are just miserable.

JTA1972 · 13/03/2026 11:43

Anyone having vivid dreams, sleep disturbances with this as well ? My ears are terrible, tinnitus, crackling, upset stomach and bad acid reflux no matter how many ppi’s i take. This thing iw worse than covid !

Mumssupportingmums · 15/03/2026 03:46

@JTA1972 I have noticed my sleep has been worse, I’ve had reflux worsening and my stomach has been very up and down and sensitive too. Didn’t know if that was from all the antibiotics and pain killers though.

Hi, I wonder if this is what I've got at the moment. To be honest I feel like it's been one bug or cold after another since the end of autumn. Saying that, the permanent headaches, sinus pain and pain around my eyes (which are dry and sore themselves), the cough, nose-blowing, and energy drain feel a bit different from the previous stuff. Does it ever end?! Just started another course of doxycycline for the sinuses but if it's not bacterial they won't make much difference I suppose.

So fed up. Tell us it gets better! ☺️

piscofrisco · 26/03/2026 21:24

I’ve still got this bloody thing. Nearly a month now on and off. My ears are absolutely ringing and so painful, and I just feel wiped. Sore throat comes back every three days or so. Very fed up of it now.

Mayim · 27/03/2026 09:08

Yes, I have this and it’s horrible, as as soon as you feel that there’s been a slight improvement, another symptom returns. I haven’t felt so unwell since having Covid. I have a horrible cough and my muscles hurt from coughing, as does my throat. I am definitely having disturbed sleep from coughing and long, strange dreams. It has made me feel so tired, that I also feel very emotional and the slightest thing can make me cry.
