Worried about my Dad - stomach cancer symptoms.

DF is in late 60s but has been fit and active. In the last few months though he’s been having trouble with bad indigestion, burping, bloating and it turns out has been having episodes of vomiting after eating. The last few weeks he’s been getting weaker and he’s having a bad time in the last few days - really weak, no appetite and struggling to eat. Mum said this morning there is some yellowing of skin and whites of eyes.
he saw the GP on Friday who said he has lots of symptoms of SC so has started him on the investigations.

just wanted some support really! So worried about him. It’s really unlike him to be ill.

Oh he has dark urine too.

Please get him to see a GP my DF had almost the same symptoms. I won't go into any more detail but your DF needs to see a GP

OrlandointheWilderness · 01/02/2026 13:18

He saw him on Friday and is booked in for bloods tomorrow morning. I think mum said he’s on the 2week pathway and he’ll be sent for endoscopy asap.
ah I'm assuming it was SC in your Dads case? I did two years of nurse training and I’m aware it doesn’t look particularly promising. The bugger has been trying to manage things by himself and not saying anything. Apparently he’s also having itchy skin.

Sorry to hear this. It sounds as though he may have obstructive jaundice. This is medically urgent especially if he’s deteriorated in the last few days.
He probably needs to be in hospital today for investigation. Maybe call 111 explain he looks jaundiced and is increasingly weak.
Hope he gets a diagnosis soon.

NiceCupOfChai · 01/02/2026 14:53

Sounds like he’s developed jaundice - best to get a review in A&E today

It wasn't SC in my Dads case it was in his liver and your describing the exact same symptoms. I apologise if I'm wrong and I don't want to cause you further worry. Because until your dad has his bloods done you don't know what it is.

WanderingGiraffe · 01/02/2026 15:21

If he’s jaundiced with these symptoms he needs a CT scan and not just an endoscopy. Hopefully that’s in hand with the 2WW and bloods will confirm jaundice, but if he keeps getting worse then I’d go to A&E tbh, jaundice can cause lots of problems.

BunsBoots · 01/02/2026 15:25

Another saying your Father should go to a&e today or at least ring 111. I assume no jaundice was evident when he saw his GP?

DemonsandMosquitoes · 01/02/2026 15:27

Pancreatic? Seek urgent medical advice.

OrlandointheWilderness · 01/02/2026 15:30

No jaundice at the appointment. I’m ringing them now (they live 3 hours away!). Thanks everyone

Yellowing could be pancreatic rather than stomach. Don't panic. A GP friend of mine noticed her mums skin and whites of eyes were yellow one morning. They went to a and e, turned out to be benign condition.

OrlandointheWilderness · 02/02/2026 09:17

I spoke to them last night - DM said she wasn’t entirely sure he did have jaundice, she said sometimes she thought he was looking a bit yellow but then he was fine. He’s eaten a satsuma and half a bowl of consommé yesterday and when I rang was watching tv. He’s very very tired. She said his urine is still very dark and looked like it had streaks in it but she didn’t get a good look before he evicted her from the bathroom so he could pee in peace 😂.
i urged them to ring 111 and get it looked at but the stubborn bugger wasn’t shifting last night. I’ve made them promise they will ring the GP first thing and update the symptoms and go to A&E if there is jaundice. She said he’s also lost weight last week. I am very very concerned. He’s in for bloods today (bless her mum was convinced the results will take weeks to come back. I did mention on the 2WP it tends to be a bit faster!). I’m going to go up and have a look myself.

I second A and E, dark urine could be an infection and that needs to be treated immediately let alone anything else it could potentially be.

OrlandointheWilderness · 02/02/2026 10:02

Report from this morning - he’s feeling better! Pee is apparently definitely paler.

Update - he’s in hospital. Bloods came back with some raised levels, I’m not sure what as GP didn’t say. He came in for endoscopy this morning (again consultant hasn’t told us the news) and they are keeping him for another scan. He’s very jaundiced and hasn’t rated for 9 days as it just makes him vomit. He is being kept in and is waiting for a bed.

Im sorry to hear your Dad is in hospital. I hope you get some answers soon x

DorisTheFinkasaurus · 05/02/2026 20:07

Have they checked his pancreas, OP? Jaundice points in that direction.
I hope you receive reassuring news.

OrlandointheWilderness · 05/02/2026 20:37

They found something on the endoscopy- in his duodenum. Most likely cancer.

I am so very sorry to hear this. My FIL sadly died couple of weeks ago in a hospice. I am very sorry to say he ignored his symptoms for 4 years (yes 4 years!). So I am hoping as your dad hasn't he will get much better news. He was tired, persistent cough every winter, losing weight, lack of appetite, dark urine and spots of blood in it, raised white blood cells in 3 blood tests that he never followed up. The lack of care he showed for his health was unbelievable. He was diagnosed 10 months ago finally after an X Ray and he had cancer in his brain, kidneys, lungs, stomach, lymph nodes and liver. The kidney cancer was the primary cancer but the stomach tumour was huge in size. It was far too late for treatment for him. I really wish all your family the best.

So sorry to hear this update, OP. Thinking of you all.

Seawolves · 05/02/2026 21:05

Really sorry to hear about your dad, I hope he gets some answers soon. We went through similar with DH so I understand the fear.

OrlandointheWilderness · 05/02/2026 21:07

Thanks guys. @Seawolves - it’s most likely cancer. It’s crap isn’t it.

OP posts:
Seawolves · 05/02/2026 21:14

It is. There are no platitudes that can make this better but we did find that once we had a firm diagnosis and a treatment plan that things were a little less scary. The not knowing was the worst bit for us (and I think quite a few others feel that way too)

OneFingerOneThumbKeepMoving · 05/02/2026 21:22

I'm so sorry to hear about your dad. I just wanted to say that you are in my thoughts 💐
