Uti symptoms antibiotics not working

isaxx · 19/01/2026 22:08

Almost a month ago got sudden uti symptoms. Took 3 days of nitrofurantoin. Felt better for a week, then symptoms crept up again. Lasted a further week drinking water, then was prescribed 7 days of co amoxiclav although no bacteria grown, just lots of white blood cells in urine. Seemed a bit better initially. Now on day 6, symptoms are back.

This is really bringing me down. Any thoughts, experiences. Drinking loads of water to get to tomorrow morning when I will contact my GP again. But it feels like antibiotics are not working and yet I bet they will not find any bacteria again.

I've had numerous UTIs over the years.
3 days of nitrofurantoin don't clear my infections, I always need 7 days.

Justwingingit2005 · 19/01/2026 22:11

Adding to that..... no other antibiotics ever work. Only nitrofurantoin

Boleynforsoup · 19/01/2026 22:12

I had this. Urine came back as quite acidic. The gross cystitis sachets really help to neutralise it but it does come back every so often but maybe twice a year.

Haggisfish3 · 19/01/2026 22:15

Sounds like the start of embedded or chronic uti. Bacteria form a biofilm. Might you be peri menopausal? Oestrogen cream might help hugely. Long term antibiotics and d mannose. Bacteria stick to it instead of your bladder wall. www.yorkshire-urology.com/cuti

Changednamejusttoanswerthis · 19/01/2026 22:23

Me too and I have no idea where it came from or how to deal with it.

Have spent days on Cranberry juice and water, followed by a week on Cefalexin. Now I am on Nitrofurantoin* *but have seen very little improvement and I am not sure what will happen if that doesn’t work.

I hate taking Antibiotics and avoid them unless desperate, but this is a clear message about how resistant some of these new bugs are to the current range of AB’s.

I really feel for you @isaxx and hope your GP can find something that works. If they do please come back and let us know what.

AuntieMaidens · 19/01/2026 23:44

Awful having to put up with this if only GP’s would give a 7 day course of Nitro to begin with.
Mine’s went on for so long had 2 week refferal to Urology. Cystoscopy done. Result there and then. Estrogen and D-Mannose advised by Urologist . All good since.

Playeden · 19/01/2026 23:56

Yes dc had inly 3d antibiotics. Bu t bear in mind asd so by the time we clocked it was uti it was probably advanced as was vomiting.
within 2w had more uti feeling and was vomiting again and got more AB this time i think 7 days though not sure... And luckily that worked.
so obviously she had several days off school just for uti and would have been half as much if given for longer to start with.

also due to uti illness is never as easy as for NT people.

isaxx · 20/01/2026 02:37

@AuntieMaidenswhat was the result of your cytoscopy? Was it an infection or 'just' menopause genitourinary syndrome? I am menopausal and feel like everything down there is on fire. But it started so suddenly a month ago. I would have expected menopause issues to have built up gradually.

OP posts:
isaxx · 20/01/2026 02:39

@Playedendid your dc get 7 days of the same antibiotics or a different one?

OP posts:
isaxx · 20/01/2026 02:41

@Changednamejusttoanswerthissorry you are suffering too. It is just awful.

OP posts:
isaxx · 20/01/2026 02:50

@Haggisfish3have been taking D mannose for many days to no effect. I think things are too far gone for that to help..

OP posts:
k1233 · 20/01/2026 02:51

@isaxx cranberries for uti's aren't just a wives tale. They definitely help so I'd recommend cranberries, cranberry juice, cranberry sauce etc - whatever you can find with a good level of cranberries (eg not watered down juice)

Keep taking the ABs, but add in cranberries.

Google what they do.

annmarie6 · 20/01/2026 02:54

I used to get a UTI every time I had sex. Nothing worked apart from taking D mannose tablets.

Changednamejusttoanswerthis · 20/01/2026 07:45

@AuntieMaidens @annmarie6 could you advise which brand of D-Mannose you are taking?

I looked at them yesterday but couldn’t decide which brand to buy.

bieabebe · 20/01/2026 07:47

My 10 months old has been hospitalised for one week in Italy in a paediatric hospital for a bad UTI. They started with coamoxiclav which didn’t work. They performed a more specific test of her urine which identified the right antibiotics which worked in the end, gentamicin and ceftriaxone. The consultant explained to me that in the most recent days they’ve seen children and adults not responding to coamoxiclav which used to be very effective as bacteria are now way more potent and can stick to the bladder and go all the way up to the higher urinary tract. I would suggest to see a consultant as one of the factors that could contribute to this is reflux of urine within the tract and often this could be also a mechanic issue. Good luck !

Octavia64 · 20/01/2026 07:48

Yep this is me.

three days on nitro.

since then burning urine anytime I drop the amount of water I’m drinking.

I’ve gone with d mannose, and massively increasing liquids.

Edited

I used this one :).
It says to take 2 a day on the description bit, but I took a few more initially.

They should help regardless of how far, if the infections E. coli. Really what we all need is an advanced urine test where they genetically analyse the bacteria to give correct treatment like this test https://www.digital-microbiology.com/product/prod_Nhnkc8rsSWjwn3

Given a third type of antibiotic to try from tomorrow. Fingers crossed, though feels like this pain is just going to go on forever. All good suggestions everyone. Will look them up

UtIs related to meno can and do flare up suddenly. As there wasn't any growth it does sound more meno related ask for vaginal oestrogen pessaries for long term prevention.

It seems crazy to me they are prescribing antibiotics when there isn't antibacterial growth. Haven't they even suggested oestrogen pessaries?

Haggisfish3 · 20/01/2026 18:41

But there most likely is bacterial growth, it’s just hidden behind a biofilm. Every so often the bacteria emerge from the biofilm and it’s that point the antibiotics will work. It’s very interesting if exceptionally frustrating to have.

Have they ruled out vaginal astrophy. Has UTI symptoms. Used vagifem and it went.
