Uti symptoms antibiotics not working

Almost a month ago got sudden uti symptoms. Took 3 days of nitrofurantoin. Felt better for a week, then symptoms crept up again. Lasted a further week drinking water, then was prescribed 7 days of co amoxiclav although no bacteria grown, just lots of white blood cells in urine. Seemed a bit better initially. Now on day 6, symptoms are back.

This is really bringing me down. Any thoughts, experiences. Drinking loads of water to get to tomorrow morning when I will contact my GP again. But it feels like antibiotics are not working and yet I bet they will not find any bacteria again.

@AuntieMaidenswhat was the result of your cytoscopy? Was it an infection or 'just' menopause genitourinary syndrome? I am menopausal and feel like everything down there is on fire. But it started so suddenly a month ago. I would have expected menopause issues to have built up gradually.

What did you cystoscopy show, if you don’t mind me asking?

I am on nitro now after trimethoprim failed. Nitro is brutal. The side effects are hellish for me!

@annmarie6 @thehonscupboard thank you for those recommendations.

@Tinybirdie what side effects are you getting?

I can see on my dipsticks that my infection is reducing but am feeling very spaced out with masses of palpitations. I cant decide if that is infection or the Nitro.

The reduction in the infection is positive, but I also experienced that on the last course of AB just for it to come back with avengeance within 24 hours of the end of the 7 day course.

My nurse prescriber told me to stop the Nitro at 3 or 5 days if I thought it had worked but not to stop too early (she has given me 7 days) I don’t want to get that bit wrong and risk it bouncing back again.

Well, unbelievably, third antibiotic seems to have worked. Fosfomycin. Obviously it might still bounce back. Only time will tell..

I am about to finish a three week course of co amoxicillin. I do not think infection has gone yet at all.

Haggisfish3 · 22/01/2026 22:46

Thank you for telling us that name of fosfomycin. I had not heard of that one but it is good for biofilm related bacteria. Think I will ask to try that one next!

I had to have cefalexin after ending up in hospital with sepsis! I was then put on a 6 month course of it at 1 tablet a night to stop any further infection - 🤞 seems to have broken the cycle but have got a further 3 months to keep it that way!
