HELP. SUDDEN FLASHES AND ZIG ZAGS IN VISION

Sellingsunsets · 12/01/2026 19:07

Just that reallyz just put my son to bed and came down stairs, and suddenly my eyes went funny, flashing lights, blurred vision and now it's almost like a multicoloured zig zag pattern. Even in the dark or with my eyes closed. I've started to get a bit of a headache too. I am having a very stressful time, and I've cried a lot today, not eaten much etc. I'm terrified I'm having a stroke or something. Any one experienced this

@Sellingsunsets has this put your mind at rest?
If the migraine meds don't work and this carries in ask for a second opinion.

Yes I will. I've woke up this morning and the headache on one side of my head is still there

@Sellingsunsets do you have a bp monitor at home?

@Sellingsunsets do you have a bp monitor at home?

Yes and I've checked it and it's normal for me. I'm wondering if this pain iny head is something else because it's in my jaw and my ear and I'm thinking the migraine was just a coincidence. But I do keep getting light-headed, I've suffered with TMJ & BPV in the past so I'm not sure the headache I have now is related to the migraine episode.

My ears look fine apparently. It's not being my ear it's like above my ear and down the left side of my head and face, jaw, and in my neck.

I’ve had these for over 30 years, first one terrified me. I had one last week, I don’t panic anymore, I just lie still and wait for it to pass.
Mine only last about 25 minutes but I also don’t have a headache just the aura. Both my grandchildren have had them as well.

It’s worth checking. There may be a decayed tooth you aren’t aware off that could be causing nerve problems further up in your face, ears and sinus.

LushLemonTart · 16/01/2026 21:14

I hope you find the cause soon.

Good call. Trigeminal neuralgia can be caused by decaying molars. I had one, the tooth felt fine but it felt like a mild migraine daily for the two weeks leading to my routine checkup. My dentist spotted it on x-ray and drilled and filled, headache went away.

Update

The GP won't see me and told me to call back again tomorrow.

Had this agony headache since it started last week, it's not in my left side, feels like it's coming from my neck, up into my left ear, with pressure and fullness and soreness in my ear, my jaw and face. The headache is my whole head. The light is hurting my eyes a bit and I feel so groggy and gross. I went to A & E and it was a 16 hour wait. I can't sit there for that long. I don't know what to do now. Painkillers aren't touching it. I don't think this is still migraine, how it all started. Anyone offer any advice 😭

If GP won’t see you go to A&E

NovemberMorn · 19/01/2026 13:03

Your GP sounds like mine...useless.
Do you have a medical drop in centre nearby, if so I would go.
If not, the A&E seems like your best bet. They will assess you when you arrive, if they deem your symptoms to be urgent you won't wait 16 hours.

LushLemonTart · 19/01/2026 13:43

You definitely need seeing that's too long.

LushLemonTart · 19/01/2026 13:44

Tell them it's excruciating and worse pain you've had. White lie but they'll scan you.

Crwysmam · 19/01/2026 16:18

Could you have flu?

I don't have any flu like symptoms or feel particularly unwell.

And like a pp said, exaggerate your symptoms. Although, since you’ve had such severe symptoms and for days now, it won’t even be an exaggeration.

What an utterly useless GP. Unconscionable.

Go to a dentist. With the pain being in your jaw, you might have a rotten tooth. A rotten molar can cause a lot of referred pain.

Glad to hear that 🤞

I get these rainbow zigzags about once a month now, though sometimes very faintly. The very first symptom, decades ago, was disappearance of half my vision - I could only see half of anything I looked at. That was really terrifying, but went away within an hour and never returned, so far.
