Many people do it. Other people don’t. Make your own choice.
I personally don’t because I’m allergic to Dettol however if I wasn’t I’d be making a Dettol bath every week!

Littletinytarzanswingingfromanosehair · 31/12/2025 19:04

DP loves a Dettol bath 1x a week! He says it takes him back to his childhood?
I have a Dettol bath after 2weeks of camping.
I worry about the effects on skin PH etc.
They help I guess, if you are prone to cuts (outdoor work), bacteria from chafing or work in places where you are exposed to lots of viruses/bacteria.
You have to follow the instructions very carefully and not under dilute.

ohyesido · 31/12/2025 19:06

It’s like disinfectant I remember my mum giving wa bath in dettol when I had severe chickenpox

it helps things like folliculitis heal but I don’t think it would do much if there was no infection or inflammation present

PassportPanicFuuuck · 31/12/2025 19:07

I can't imagine it would do one's intimate areas much good if you were prone to thrush or similar.

LightYearsAgo · 31/12/2025 19:09

What exactly do you need help with?

There's lots of information online

NeverDropYourMooncup · 31/12/2025 19:09

I'd probably use Hibiclens instead, but there's nothing wrong with it in principle if you're fine with smelling like a first aid box. Having said that, until they withdrew coal tar bath additive, I didn't care as long as the Psoriasis stopped burning. If she's got a specific skin condition that benefits from it, there's nothing wrong with doing it.

TonTonMacoute · 31/12/2025 19:09

They are nice, and I love the smell, but the only time we have used them is when DH has had to get down and dirty with our rural sewage outlet which gets blocked from time to time.

I wouldn't want to use them regularly unless for a specific medical reason.

Devilsmommy · 31/12/2025 19:11

Used to love a Dettol bath! Haven't had one in ages as I only shower now☹️

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 31/12/2025 19:12

Make sure it's the right dettol first of all! Wink

I've never done it, it's quite old fashioned I think. DP used to do it if he'd got covered in something disgusting and stinking at work. He reckoned it was the only thing that got the stink out of his pores.

ShesTheAlbatross · 31/12/2025 19:12

I’ve never really understood the benefit of them on a regular basis with no specific reason. I’ve never felt like my skin needed a general antiseptic clean.
Is there evidence that it makes a difference to anything (outside of specific reasons for having them)?

helpfulperson · 31/12/2025 19:13

I love them. Mostly I have one after camping trips or challenging walks etc where my skin is covered in mud and grazes etc and i want to be sure everything is disinfected

Seagullsandsausagerolls · 31/12/2025 19:13

I used to like a savlon bath too

Pennyplant19 · 31/12/2025 19:16

Ah, takes me straight back to my childhood. Dettol bath and Fairy Soap (big green bar)

ThejoyofNC · 31/12/2025 19:23

Nothing wrong with a Dettol bath but they have a wide product range these days so be sure you're using the right one!

GAJLY · 31/12/2025 19:41

No! I had a Dettol bath once when I was 21 and I broke out in acne and a rash all over my face and body! My bits burned for days! Never again!

MrsArcher23 · 31/12/2025 19:53

Ah, the comforting smell of my childhood. My mother’s cure for all cuts and scrapes. One of my late FIL’s sayings if he saw someone grubby or greasy on tv( think Russel Brand) he’d say all he needed was a dettol bath and a wire brush…

rainbowunicorn22 · 31/12/2025 19:58

Sometimes, as a child, we used to have these. When I was stupid enough to go backwards down the slide and land on my knees on the gritty concrete, no safety then, Mum said it would help soak out all the gravel. Mind the bath would have done that anyway without the Dettol, but I guess it got rid of the germs.
I do not think i would do it now as my skin is now very sensitive and I do not think it would do my lady garden much good!

Letmehaveabloodyusernameplease · 01/01/2026 13:15

My GP told me to do this when I had boils on my bum that wouldn't go away. One capful in a bath full of water. Worked wonders in clearing them up.

PersephoneParlormaid · 01/01/2026 13:18

The smell of Dettol reminds me of the sick bucket at primary school. It was a metal bucket that had sawdust soaked with Dettol in it, and there was a shovel with it. If anyone was sick the sawdust was put on top and left to soak a while.

BauhausOfEliott · 01/01/2026 13:27

Dettol is a strong disinfectant that will kill off bacteria. All bacteria. Including the non-harmful bacteria that don’t cause illness. The ones that are actually helpful and good for you.

Nobody should be bathing in Dettol unless they’re covered head to foot in open cuts and grazes and have also just fallen into a tank of shit.

Westfacing · 01/01/2026 13:59

Ah - this takes me back 50 years when we used to give patients a Dettol bath - didn't know it was still a thing!

It was also when we cleaned infected wounds with EUSOL (Edinburgh University Solution of Lime)

Those were the days! 😂

Edited

How much did you use? It should be a capful to a bathful of water, no more.

gottakeeponmoving · 01/01/2026 16:00

I remember Detol baths as a child. Didn’t do me or my skin any harm. It was always just a capful.

Not had one recently though 🤪

Westfacing · 01/01/2026 16:01

The other product we used was Savlon - I think they were interchangeable back then.

InSpainTheRain · 01/01/2026 16:24

I love a Dettol bath! I don’t know if they do any good or not, but I love the smell.
