Tonsillitis or quinsy?

Went to walk in centre Christmas Eve was told viral tonslitis, was given antibiotics for over holidays incase white spots appear.
they did Christmas night started antibiotics by Boxing Day was unable to swallow them, tonsils were huge and really sore, could only sip warm tea.
went back to walk in on 27th was told quinsy and to go to A&e
went to a&e was left for 6 hours tried to canulate me 6 times failed as I was too dehydrated, doctor looked for max 3 mins and said tonsillitis continue antibiotics at home that you already have.
was feeling like I couldn’t breathe like a golf ball in my upper throat, most pain was right side, today my right jaw and kneck is too sore to touch and can only talk very low, stil Canot swallow anything but managing some liquids only when iv taken pain relief.
im taking 2 codeine, 2 ibruprofen and 2 paracetamol all together every 6 hours and it’s the only relief I get leaving me with just slight pain when swallowing but only lasting for 2 hours max.
not sure to hold out on antibiotics been taking them since yesterday morning or to go back.

Tonsillitis. Try gargling salt water.

Littletinytarzanswingingfromanosehair · 29/12/2025 20:29

I've had quinsys 2x in my mid teens. It was horrendous so I feel your pain. Please, please don't panic but it looked similar to your pictures. I would get in touch with GP or 111 tomorrow if the practice is busy or you notice increased swelling tonight. The voice and speaking is a common term known as "hot potato".

I had mine drained and it was instant relief, this was 23 years ago so I don't know if that was the procedure now. Fingers crossed the antibiotics will start kicking it's ass.

Xxx

I had a stronger feeling it may of been, a few have said it looks much worse than tonsilitis the pictures don’t do much justice to show how big they are, only way to find out is to lower the pain relief and see if the pain has gone slightly or still as bad to know if the antibiotics are working or not 🥲

What is your body temperature? Can you open your mouth normally OP?

Onlyforaweek · 29/12/2025 21:33

I have reoccurring quinsy - maybe 5 times on the same side ober the last 9 years. For me, it is very much one side is pain free and the other is not. I cannot open my mouth to take pills and cannot talk properly when it sets in. However, if you’re worried, mention quinsy to the GP as, in my experience, they act very quickly at the mention.

I haven’t had a high temperature, I never really do no matter when I’m sick and whatever I’m sick with, it hurts to open my mouth but only on the side it is sore

Yeah Literaly from the start my right side has throbbed the left don’t feel anything not even a scratch, I can talk but it’s very low and sound very very very congested (I’m not) I cannot swallow the pills and I did try to eat some soup and when I moved my jaw it hurt

As @27pilates says, how the mouth opening? I remember barely being able to open?

Honestly I feel for you, I had tonsillitis month on month off from 13-15 years olds, eventually I got quinsys, I had enough after the 2nd bought and it was back in the day they took tonsils out. Ironically the day they were due to take them out.... tonsillitis 😂😭...honestly.

Ice lollies if you can to keep the area cool and even ice cream give you some calories for energy. Xx

Foodylicious · 29/12/2025 21:40

I'd say see GP again in the moneing if you can, or possibly ly A&E.
The antibiotics should be working by now, and it should be starting to get better not worse.

So i can open as seen on picture enough to take a picture but pressing tongue down with the stick, but it does hurt to do so and only on the side which hurts .
i don’t suffer at all with tonsils maybe once or twice iv had tonsillitis so this is where im lost on if this is normal tonsillitis as its reaaally painful, I tried ice cream but for some reason cold just kills me! I can only drink warmer drinks (not hot) it’s horrific I didn’t even get a Christmas dinner 😂 xx

I certainly will, I may drop to 1 codeine as they’re making me fall asleep pretty fast x

It looks like a bad tonsillitis rather than quinsy, quinsy is usually one sided and would push the uvula (the dangly bit at the back of your throat) to the side. Are you able to swallow your own saliva? Does your voice sound different (we tend to call it ‘hot potato voice’ as it sounds like you’re trying to talk with a hot chip in your mouth), what is your temperature?

the pain is just one sided but both do look swollen, the painful one slightly abit more than the other, I will try get another picture to upload a clearer one, I can swallow my saliva but it is painful, my voice is slightly different but not quite “hot potatoes” the way I can describe is like when youv had a mouth load of chocolate and need a drink, that’s how it’s changed, I haven’t had a temperature just felt rather feverish, I have been checking it

To those of you who have had quinzy more than once please plug for having tonsils removed. I used to have this 2 or 3 times a year and my GP was very reluctant to refer me for a tonsillectomy but eventually she did and they were removed and despite her insistence that I would have chest infections instead I have been fine for 10 years since

megxa · 29/12/2025 22:02

Can’t really get much better I can open my mouth much more

@jollygoose yes!! I did get mine removed in 2004 but this was after 2x years of hell.
@megxa give it until morning but if no better after a sleep or worse please persist xx

27pilates · 29/12/2025 23:00

You need to measure your mouth opening OP in fingers, and compare it to your normal mouth opening in fingers, to gauge the level of/development of trismus. I think your uvula is deviated on your last photo, and you probably do have quinsy rather than tonisllitis. I think you should be seeking urgent medical care, if not tonight first thing tomorrow. Oral antibiotics may not be enough.

27pilates · 29/12/2025 23:02

keep a log of your SATs and pulse too, if you’re not heading back to A& E (a different one, one with ENT preferably ) tonight.

I’m not sure with my usual as iv never measured but right now I can fit two inbetween my teeth top to bottom, pain relief has eased a little and iv managed fluids and soup so I’ll defiantly be checking when I wake up I’m due one more dose of antibiotic tonight, if no change in swelling tomorow I will go back asap thanks for all the advice xx

I've had both, the difference with Quince's was that I had a raging temperature and doctors initially diagnosed glandular fever. Quince's is an abscess, or more than one, that have to be drained. It's usually easy for doctors to spot.

The only relief I could ever get, even after drugs, was with fresh chocolate milkshake. Couldn't even swallow my own saliva. Having my tonsils out was the best thing ever.

Lifeonapigfarm · 30/12/2025 00:27

When I had quincy I couldn't swallow my own saliva and was in so much pain it made me cry. The doctors knew it was a quincy immediately.

Yeah I felt this way today the pain relief did help, I’m hoping it’s not this and just bad tonsillitis I just don’t want to wait too long if it is and it be 10 times worse 🥲
