Went to walk in centre Christmas Eve was told viral tonslitis, was given antibiotics for over holidays incase white spots appear.
they did Christmas night started antibiotics by Boxing Day was unable to swallow them, tonsils were huge and really sore, could only sip warm tea.
went back to walk in on 27th was told quinsy and to go to A&e
went to a&e was left for 6 hours tried to canulate me 6 times failed as I was too dehydrated, doctor looked for max 3 mins and said tonsillitis continue antibiotics at home that you already have.
was feeling like I couldn’t breathe like a golf ball in my upper throat, most pain was right side, today my right jaw and kneck is too sore to touch and can only talk very low, stil Canot swallow anything but managing some liquids only when iv taken pain relief.
im taking 2 codeine, 2 ibruprofen and 2 paracetamol all together every 6 hours and it’s the only relief I get leaving me with just slight pain when swallowing but only lasting for 2 hours max.
not sure to hold out on antibiotics been taking them since yesterday morning or to go back.

Quinsy is an A&E job unfortunately so if your GP thought it was that the other day and you've already been to A&E, it's A&E you need to go back to.

I really hope you feel lots better soon!

You need to get back to A&E. If not tonight then 8am. If it is Quincy Needs urgent treatment. Certainly sounds worse than tonsillitis and isn’t getting better. Get seen by another dr in a&E. Write down your story so you don’t need to try to explain it

If you can swallow tablets you can swallow water, even if it really hurts. You need to keep getting as much water in to you as you can, despite the pain. A spray like difflam can really help with this. If you don’t feel better soon you need to see a new doctor cos it could be that your particular strain of bacteria is resistant to the type of antibiotic you’ve been given. Antibiotics should start to work in around 48 hours after you start them, though the time it happened to me my doctor made me wait til 72 before giving me new ones.

I’ve also had quinsy - I literally couldnt swallow (the liquid antibiotic came out my nose when I tried). I remember having to spit every time my mouth got full of saliva 🤢

I had quinsy, the doctor sent me to A & E as I was unable to swallow anything; including saliva & the ABs he prescribed 2 days before. I was in hospital for 3 days on a drip (feeling very ill) & the abscess was lanced. Not a pleasant experience but no problems since - I hope you feel better soon x

Any update OP?
You alright?

PfizerFan · 30/12/2025 20:32

Can you talk? I've had quinsy (horrendous) and couldnt speak properly. I believe "hot potato voice" is a common symptom.

BellissimoGecko · 30/12/2025 21:34

If you suspect it’s quinsy, go to A&E. Dd gets quinsy and it can change really quickly. Take care!

Yes im a lot better than I was now after another GP appointment and A&E trip, there was a small abscess then stronger antibiotics, lucky doctor thinks the first antibiotics had been fighting it already, so another 10 days, I feel a lot better already, still really hurts but nowhere near as bad, I hadn’t realised how much I actually could not speak! Horrendous and hope I never experience it again 🥲
