I'm either totally normal, or completely crazy...

Okay. I have tried to ask this in RL to people before, for years, but as yet, no one has any idea what I am talking about.

I can make a noise in my head. It is like I am squeezing brain muscles and it makes a sort of noise like thunder. I can do it anytime, and for as long as I want but not more than a few seconds or I start to feel a bit strange.

I have been able to do this since I can remember, and I know I used to do it when I was frustrated or getting a row when I was little. Looking at me, you would not know I was doing anything, IYKWIM.

Does anyone have any idea what I am talking about? Is it normal, can everyone do this? If not, what is it? Is it harming my brain?

I hope I am not crazy...

well i have no idea but my gut reaction would be dont do it

DirtySexyMummy · 09/06/2008 15:24

It doesn't hurt, and I have been doing it for 20 years that I can remember.

What if I have done damage?

Yep, I'm with you DSM. I can do that too. Sort of feels as if I'm squeezing the bit between my ears!! No idea if it's normal though!

LaDiDaDi · 09/06/2008 15:25

I can do it too. I think it comes from my ears/neck though I can't tell you what it's caused by and I'm a doctor, possibly it's the muscles around your ears?//

Sparkletastic · 09/06/2008 15:26

Is it like when you can hear your pulse thumping in your ears? Is it when you are physically knackered, stressed or have raised your blood pressure? I can't do it - have just tried - but then I can't wiggle my ears either and that must surely be connected

zippitippitoes · 09/06/2008 15:26

well i doubt you have but if it makes you fel strange and tbh i have no idea what you are talking about then i wouldnt do it unless it is pleasant strange

i guess it is a bit like describing an orgasm to someone who has never had one

SydneyB · 09/06/2008 15:27

I can do it! Its your ears.

shinyshoes · 09/06/2008 15:28

I'm jealous, I wanna do it!

SydneyB · 09/06/2008 15:28

Think its totally harmless by the way!

DirtySexyMummy · 09/06/2008 15:29

Honor and Ladidadi - THANK GOD!!

Really want to know what it is though, and shy its just some people?

Sparkle - No, its not like when you can hear your pulse in your ears. Its not a pulsating noise, its like thunder, and doesn't have 'breaks'. And it has nothing to do with being tired or blood pressure, I can do it at anytime.
I can't wiggle my ears either.

Anyone else sat here doing weirdy straining to try and do it???

DirtySexyMummy · 09/06/2008 15:30

Yes, I think maybe it is my ears. Not brain after all

It feels like my brain is vibrating.

I feel boringly 'ordinary' and mourning the lack of special ears....

DirtySexyMummy · 09/06/2008 15:35

KM - No. But I always used to try!

I also have a memory of being able to 'fly' down the stairs, and can 'remember' doing it. I could also put my socks on after my shoes, but still put them on properly.

Those are actual memories, I think somewhere along the line I have got mixed up between dreams and reality. Either that, or I really could do those things.

If you're doing what I think you're doing it's coming from your ears and isn't doing you any harm. Do you get the same noise just as you're aout to yawn, or when you're trying to stop yourself from yawning?

zippyteedoodah · 09/06/2008 15:38

I can do it! I can do it! DOn't know how - just feels like I squeeze inside my ears. Wow - I have an instant sound-muffler built in!

Sparkletastic · 09/06/2008 15:39

DSM - you know earlier you were worrying about being crazy..........

Flamesparrow · 09/06/2008 15:40

Ooooooooooooh I can do it if it is the stopping yawning one

fiodyl · 09/06/2008 15:42

I can do it too- not sure what it is though? Maybe its hearing the sound of the muscles being tensed up?

bookthief · 09/06/2008 15:42

I can do it! I think it kind of involves your eye muscles as well. Anyway, I knew exactly what you meant when you described it.

DirtySexyMummy · 09/06/2008 15:42

It doesn't happen when I yawn or try not to, but I can do it then if I want to.

Sparkle - Yeah.. Not doing much to play down the crazy with those snippets. Maybe I just am crazy..

OP posts:
mrsbabookaloo · 09/06/2008 15:43

DSM, I had no idea what you meant and thought "Yes, DSM, you are crazy" but then i read honormatopoeia's explanation and thought YES, I can totally do that! But, only for a second or two.

And I also have very very strong memories of being able to fly down the stairs, but I've always told myself it must have been a dream...

DirtySexyMummy · 09/06/2008 15:46

Oh my god! This is why I love MN.

I no longer think I am crazy. Or, at least if I am, so are loads more people so it is okay.

I love you ladies!
