I'm either totally normal, or completely crazy...

Okay. I have tried to ask this in RL to people before, for years, but as yet, no one has any idea what I am talking about.

I can make a noise in my head. It is like I am squeezing brain muscles and it makes a sort of noise like thunder. I can do it anytime, and for as long as I want but not more than a few seconds or I start to feel a bit strange.

I have been able to do this since I can remember, and I know I used to do it when I was frustrated or getting a row when I was little. Looking at me, you would not know I was doing anything, IYKWIM.

Does anyone have any idea what I am talking about? Is it normal, can everyone do this? If not, what is it? Is it harming my brain?

I hope I am not crazy...

Another flyer here.... It is like swimming through air

DirtySexyMummy · 09/06/2008 15:50

My flying was as if I was sitting on the stairs but a foot or so off the stairs. Like I was 'bumping' down them, but I was actually floating above. So, when I got to the bottom, I would just 'stand up' and no one knew..

Weirdly I have a strange stair related memory too. Its a memory of being at the top of the stairs in the house I lived in when I was very young. I jumped off the top stair and floated straight across but I realise I shouldnt have jumped because Im going to get my head stuck in the loop of my dollys dummy! the dummy was also floating in mid air!

I dont remember if I did get my head stuck in it(although that would have been impossible-but then again so is floating in the air) but I quite often have a 'flashback' of this memory when Im about to walk down stairs and have to hold on.

DirtySexyMummy · 09/06/2008 15:53

Wow. So what are these 'memories' we all have of flying down stairs? Whats that about?

ShowOfHands · 09/06/2008 15:55

I can do it. It's a bit like being in a wind tunnel. Physically doing it is similar to the thing you do when you equalize when diving or when trying to make your ears pop before flying but without holding your nose. It's definitely something to do with my ears.

DirtySexyMummy · 09/06/2008 15:56

ShowofHands - good explanation.

I thought it was my brain vibrating for all these years..

I dunno what they are but it is strange that alot of people seem to have them.

Maybe its some kind of confused half memory of being carried downstairs as a baby i.e. travelling down the stairs but higher up and not actually in contact with the stairs?

NigellaTheUndomesticGoddess · 09/06/2008 15:59

my brain makes thunder too.

totalmisfit · 09/06/2008 16:02

i get that 'blood thumping in my ears thing' sometimes. but it's not the same, is it? I can't do it at will

totalmisfit · 09/06/2008 16:04

Wow! i have flying down the stairs memories too!

i thought i was the only one.

I also had a very vivid dream/memory of flying out of my room at about waist level, across the hall, through my parent's room and into the bathroom.

I was convinced it was real for years, but i've now just about managed to convince myself otherwise.

FruitynNutty · 09/06/2008 16:05

I think I can do it too. It's like when you begin a yawn clicky ear thing then if you hold it, it feels/sounds like thunder. It's like you're squeezing something deep inside your ears. Does that make any sense?

DirtySexyMummy · 09/06/2008 16:08

Flame, Misfit and Fio - its weird. I have tried googling it but to avail - I keep getting sites about actually flying, on planes and such. No use.

How odd! I used to think that maybe sometimes my spirit would leave my body and I would go for out of body experiences. Probably not though..

Fruity - yes that makes sense!

Sparkletastic · 09/06/2008 16:11

Okay I take back the crazy thing as I know what you mean about the flying BUT it was just a series of very vivid dreams, always the same, about flying from the top of the stairs to the bottom.

DirtySexyMummy · 09/06/2008 16:12

More than likely Sparkle.

But it doesn't feel like dreams, it feels like memories..

electricbarbarella · 09/06/2008 16:14

I have been sat here reaing this thread trying so hard to make my brain thunder, it won't. I can fly down the stairs though and i also get out of body experiences abit too often.

LobstersLass · 09/06/2008 16:22

DSM, I can do this too.

Do you get the same noise if you place the palms of your hands flat over your ears?

It's nothing to do with hearing the blood in your head, it's apparently to do with changing the way in which your ears are hearing ambient noise so that it appears amplified - or something.

DirtySexyMummy · 09/06/2008 18:36

Lobster - yes the noise is very similar, although with hands its a bit more like an underwater sound.

So, why can some people not do it then? Is there more that can, or more that can't?

OP posts:
SubRosa · 09/06/2008 19:06

This is a brilliant thread! DSM is spot on with the description of flying, that it feels more like a memory than a dream. We can't all be mad, surely?

Mammina · 09/06/2008 19:29

I grew up in a bungalo

LobstersLass · 11/06/2008 23:28

I can report that it's not connected to the flying memory as I sadly don't have that - it sounds like great fun!

funnypeculiar · 11/06/2008 23:42

wow, I've just discovered I can do it too. Do I get a badge?
I don't have memories of flying - but a very, VERY vivid dream about being able to slide over the top of corn fields on a tea tray. I still have a vivid 'physical' memory of how wonderful it felt - I actually use it as a sort of meditation/relaxation technique...
