from front to back - squewering sweet potatoes onto a fiercesome bbq implement.

Didn't really hurt or bleed. It isn't swollen or disgusting; have bandaged it. I think dh was wobblier than me about it all.

Blimey.

Hope you are ok though GGG, best not to go around for too long with a hole in your hand. Cool way to freak people out though "Look - stigmata!"

NatalieJaneIsPregnant · 09/06/2008 08:13

You should get it seen to, my BIL did the same with a screw driver, decided it wasn't bad enough for A&E due to no pain, swelling or bleeding, the next day something was hanging out of the hole. he pulled it thinking it was damaged skin, and his thumb moved! Still no pain or swelling or anything!

Hope you get it sorted today

belgo · 09/06/2008 08:14

I'd be worried about tetanus. Get a booster.

Hope you are ok!

exactly NJ, lack of pain isn't always a good thing!

JaneHH · 09/06/2008 08:15

ouch!!

at least you can still type on Mumsnet

No seriously, I hope you've had a chance to get it seen to and that nothing's been harmed.

NatalieJaneIsPregnant · 09/06/2008 08:20

IME any piercing injury needs checking for the following reason.

  1. risk of infection
  2. partial tendon/ ligament/nerve damage - this means that whilst everything is currently working ok, If a structure is partially torn then it can rupture at a later date under stress.
leaving permanent damage.

Not a risk worth taking

Beetroot · 09/06/2008 08:38

ggg, please go to the doctor

tissy · 09/06/2008 08:38

as long as the skewer and sweet potato were clean, you shouldn't need antibiotics.

If you can move everything, and feel with the tips of your fingers, you will probably be fine. Check on tetanus status (although sweet potatoes aren't known for harbouring tetanus).

It is perfectly possible to skewer your hand without doing any major damage at all (as you seem to have found out .

tissy · 09/06/2008 08:45

risk of infection not massive- probably missed the boat for antibiotics now, even if you would have got them yesterday

you might have some partial tendon damage, but if you can move the fingers well now, it is unlikely. In order to determine if there is partial damage, a surgeon would have to make a much larger hole in order to investigate. Most wouldn't, but would wait and see if any weakness develops, and deal with it then.

No significant ligaments in the palm that would be rogered by a skewer.

Nerves-if any parts of your fingers are numb, that might warrant exploration, but if you can feel fine, then the nerves are fine.

Go to a+e, it would reassure you, but they may do nothing!

ggglimpopo · 09/06/2008 08:50

My thoughts entirely Tissy. Filled a 5 ml syringe with peroxide type cleanser and got a wobbly dh to squirt it through. Am breastfeeding and allergic to penicillin so not too hot on abs.

I have no numbness, lom, redness or pain. I will get tetanus status checked.

I have mega stress induced jaw pain, have had it about a month and is making my life v miserable. Was going to see Gp about that this am. Will mention my hand!

somehow NatalieJane's contribution made me heave more than the original .

My comment would be - lack of pain may mean nerve damage - so worth having it checked asap (no idea what they do to mend nerve damage though).

at the peroxide, but it's good for clearing out wounds

was it contact lens cleaner, by any chance?- I once put a lens in my eye without having rinsed the peroxide out, and it was agony!

(hope there aren't any tissue viability nurses on MN, they'd have a fit!)

I have a very hard stomach but that peroxide bit makes even me feel a bit odd...

ggglimpopo · 09/06/2008 08:55

Oh, and hs is going through 'anti consumerist' phase and wanted to keep syringe ('its clean; it has had antiseptic in it!')in case it was needed in the future for something else.

Have binned syringe.

lack of pain usually means no serious damage!
