I find it I guzzle lots of water it can help move them about a bit.

Do you have one of the kits with the pokey stick with a light?

pavillion1 · 01/11/2025 20:51

This was me last week. I got a tonsil stone kit off Amazon and performed an extraction. There was a lot of retching involved!

No amount of gargling salt water or coughing did anything.
Mine was hidden behind that flap/curtain thing. I had to really say “ahhh” and then kind of pull that flap back. Once I caught a glimpse of it, I vaguely knew where to probe when it disappeared back into its cave again. I prodded around until it popped out and then tried to scoop it out. It took a good few attempts.

Get the kit off amazon, it’s less than £10.

Pricelessadvice · 01/11/2025 20:54

Roughly where is it?

WishIcouldhelphim · 01/11/2025 20:56

Open your mouth as wide as you can, position a torch light/phone light towards the back of your throat, get a cotton bud and give it a good poke. If you spot it push it out, you may need tweezers to grab it. Takes a while but worth it.

I feel for you as they are hidious, had my tonsils taken out for that very reason!

Have you tried making a vacuum in your mouth? And then having a good prod? I find that sometimes helps dislodge mine

That throat numbing spray you can buy for sore throats helps prevent the retching whilst you poke around

you have just described mine perfectly

It took me a week to finally get mine out. I was so paranoid of my breath and the taste in my mouth was rank.

I had so many failed removal attempts because I couldn’t see what I was trying to get but I could kind of feel it in there and my ear hurt to swallow.

At the end of the week I got so fed up that I decided I wasn’t leaving the bathroom til it was gone. It was brutal. I ended up inflaming that flap/curtain bit from all the poking and prodding. Plus I was retching a lot. But I was so determined to get it out.
Once I caught a tiny glimpse of it, it was game on then. I was absolutely determined to get the bugger out!

Try and make that “ahh” sound to kind of push everything into visibility and at the same
time, use that little tonsil tool to pull that curtain back. I found I had one or two decent attempts before I would start to retch. See if you can catch sight of it so you know where to press.

I’d never had one before so it was new territory for me. It’s not something I want to repeat too often, I must admit 😂

what the heck is a tonsil stone

Soontobe60 · 01/11/2025 21:46

I once thought I’d got a fish bone stuck in my throat. I phoned the GP and they told me to come in. The GP couldn’t see anything but sent me to A+E with a letter after they phoned the hospital from the surgery. I was seen almost immediately and sent up to an ENT ward! After an hour or so, one of the doctors examined me, prodded around for a second or two and then said ‘oh, it’s not a bone, it’s a tonsil stone’ and promptly popped it out! I’d never heard of such a thing… he told me to gargle regularly with salt water to prevent them forming but I’m certain I’ve got another one. I might go back to A+E and pretend I’ve got another fish bone stuck 😂

@pavillion1
Re the ‘vacuum’ hold a bit of air in your mouth and close your throat off and keep your mouth sealed. Then drop your jaw and act like you’re going to open your mouth, while pushing your tongue down onto your bottom palate. It lowers the pressure in your mouth and can be just enough to dislodge them slightly

Greysowhat · 02/11/2025 10:55

Get a big crunchy apple and take a huge bite. Chew it until is like small pieces of gravel then do a big swallow. Hopefully the gravelly apple will push the bugger out of it's pit.

As we age tonsils shrink so it could make things better.
