Ramipril side effects

ChristmasFairyLiquid · 24/03/2025 11:53

Is anyone on Ramipril for high blood pressure? Do you mind sharing any side effects you have?

I’ve read the possible side effects online and in the packet leaflet but interested to hear real stories.

I have some other health issues going on and want to try and work out which might be Ramipril related. Thank you!

Just had a friend with heart problems have to change his script as Ramipril makes him cough. A mutual friend who works in the NHS said Ramipril is known for it.

BigPinkKnees · 24/03/2025 11:56

My only side effect was the cough but it was enough of a cough to make me change tablets.

MujeresLibres · 24/03/2025 11:58

I had a slight cough for a few months, but it's gone now. No other noticeable side effects.

blcakgaragedoor · 24/03/2025 11:59

Husband was on it and the cough was shocking. Stuck it 8 months then had to change as he was keeping us both awake.

RedRiverShore5 · 24/03/2025 12:01

DH has been on it for years, 10 mg now and doesn't seem to have any side effects now. When he started he was on a much lower level and he had the cough for a few months.

ruethewhirl · 24/03/2025 12:13

Cough here too, horrendous. Doc switched me to candesartan and it went away virtually overnight.

Had awful cough - kept me awake - changed to losartan and it disappeared

RampantIvy · 24/03/2025 12:55

DH is on it and is fine.

Dearg · 24/03/2025 12:56

I have been on it for about 15 years.
Not had any problems. I know it is famous for the cough, but it’s not affected me. Either that or my asthma meds are suppressing it.

EducatingArti · 24/03/2025 12:58

Yes, I got the cough too and needed to change to irebesartan.

bunnibee · 24/03/2025 12:59

Cough here too, changed to candesartan and amlodipine,

ChristmasFairyLiquid · 24/03/2025 13:52

Thank you all. Sounds fairly unanimous on the cough then!

I also feel a bit achy and flu ish though not sure whether that’s Ramipril, my other issue or stress at what the other issue is! Or just a bug 🤷‍♀️

I think any new medicine can sometimes make you feel a bit out of sorts, what level did they start you on.

worrisomeasset · 24/03/2025 14:07

I’ve been on it for a couple of years and have had no side effects whatsoever.

I’m on a tablet a day - not sure of strength or whether all Ramipril is a standard strength

Me too!

Practice nurse said that they have to give ramipril first as it's older and cheaper than irbesartan and the like.

Lifestooshort71 · 24/03/2025 17:34

Been on it for 14 years. No cough.

Jellifer · 24/03/2025 17:40

Been on it nearly a month. Started at 2.5mg now upped to 5mg. Zero cough, zero side effects

tothelefttotheleft · 24/03/2025 17:43

I didn't have the cough. I was prescribed 2.5mg. I also take another bp med.

A pharmacy miss prescribed and gave me 5mg. It made me dizzy, nauseous and vomit at the increased dose.

On the smaller dose I was fine.

HappyHolidai · 24/03/2025 17:46

Tiredness. No cough. Been on it since 2008.

JeanGenieJean · 24/03/2025 17:47

I've been on 10mg for 20 years- no side effects whatsoever.

MaryGreenhill · 24/03/2025 17:52

I had/have a slight cough on times but it certainly isn't enough to stop me taking it because it gives me great control over my B/P am on 2.5mgs once a day

nokidshere · 24/03/2025 18:14

I’ve been taking it since July after a heart attack. The cough is annoying but intermittent but no other side effects. DH had such a bad cough when taking it that he switched to a different drug.

Hi, yes cough is a well known side effect, it can be mild and some people can tolerate it, others can’t. Ramipril is also known to cause sore muscles and joints and has other potential side effects which could make you feel a bit rubbish but it is also a very good medicine. It would be good to know how long you’ve been on it. If it’s a couple of days, things could settle, if longer or severe, definitely worth a quick chat with the GP or your local pharmacist. There are plenty of alternatives.

I’ve had a cough and also this nausea. Will have to have a look at my dosage, maybe it needs reducing, thanks for commenting
