Continuous pain in my legs

NoGwenItsABoxingDayTrifle · 05/02/2025 18:10

I've made another doctors appointment for three weeks time but this has been going on for 4 years now with no explanation.
I have continuous pain in my calves, some days are worse than others but it's always there.
It feels like when you've done loads of exercise and you've ripped your muscles. It started in 2021 and I've been to the doctors about it but they can't find a reason.
Ruled out clots, circulation problems, deep vein thrombosis.
I'm 42 I don't smoke, rarely drink alcohol, size 12, work full time and am on my feet a lot, normally end the day on around 20 thousand steps.
I don't know if this matters but the last few years have been very stressful.. police investigations and a trial about abuse from my childhood. Can long term stress cause chronic pain, and if so how do you recover from it?
Any advice welcome, today has been awful and I'm in agony.

What you experience sounds similar to what I had/have. For me having regular magnesium supplement helped/helps.

Thanks I'll buy some, have you been given a reason for the pain?

This was self medicating, after reading up on it. Magnesium helps to relax muscles. I suppose I would probably need to eat more plants than my 5 a day to get what I need.

PaintDecisions · 05/02/2025 19:19

Have you seen a podiatrist? Flat feet and a number of other things can cause that sort of pain. It could be as simple as changing footwear or adding a shoe insert.

Or a physiotherapist to look at your gait?

Stress may well be a cause, but it's worth ruling out other causes.

fireplacetiles · 05/02/2025 20:11

Probably not but do you take antihistamines regularly? I had constant leg aches and found out that my daily cetrizine was the cause, switched to every other day and it went away almost overnight.

Yes I take 50mg of Phenerghan a night, prescribed by my gp for sleep. Have done for years, I'll mention this at my appointment, Thank you.

Fibro? I have pain all over with it and dreadful, constant pain in my legs. It's caused by a stress response and I developed it 12 years when diagnosed with cancer, my bowel perforated and i was operated on at midnight, i was told afterwards i would have died during the night they hadn't . Since the same cancer reocurred last year and I had to have chemo followed by a bone marrow transplant to prevent it returning, the fibro has absolutely ramped up. Constant pain.

destiel00 · 05/02/2025 20:39

Me too!
Only one leg, though. Had a scan, no clot. Family history of PVD though :(
I'm back at the Dr's tomorrow.
My pain goes up behind my knees too
I'm overweight, but have never smoked and don't drink very often
It's horrible

StepawayfromtheLindors · 05/02/2025 20:41

20,000 steps a day must be at least ten miles, what kind of shoes are you wearing?

SerenStarEtoile · 05/02/2025 20:42

Have you had scans? Could be muscle/ligament attachment problem?

Hope you find out what it is.

ThatUniqueKoala · 05/02/2025 20:44

Sorry to interrupt OPs thread but I need to ask, did you feel it was muscle pain or joint pain?
I'm on daily cetirizine and recently have had the most horrific joint pain, genuinely unable to move or walk properly without agony.

I have thought that it could be fibromyalgia but from what I can gather there's no test for this.

No scans but I'm going to really try and get some more answers from the next appointment.

It definitely feels more muscle than joint.

I think they can test for fibro by checking 7 areas of the body where there must be pain.

Zigza · 05/02/2025 21:48

You should get your ferritin (iron stores) levels checked. Iron deficiency can cause muscular/joint pains. My little boy is iron deficient and experiences leg pains

Conqueeftador · 05/02/2025 22:24

Do you take any other medications regularly?

ThoseDarnCrows · 05/02/2025 22:32

I'm on my feet for several hours a day and my leg muscles hurt too. Particularly my calves, back of the knee, and shins.
I see it as they're working hard, tightening up through the day. So, every other day I massage them using a little moisturising cream. Just work it into and around the painful areas.
This first time It may take 2-3 sessions before seeing the results you're aiming for.

notnorman · 05/02/2025 22:35

That's exactly what my fibromyalgia feels like.

Nope just Phenerghan for sleep.

Sorry to hear that, can I ask how did you get a diagnosis. I feel like now my gp has ruled out dvt and blood clots he's not taking it seriously. I can't keep being told try doing more cardio and eating less sugar. I'm 42 and am struggling to walk up a flight of stairs some days.
It's not being on my feet to much either, I've had the last week off work as holiday and have spent most of it on my sofa reading.. yet yesterday was the worst it's ever been.

I'll be interested to see what the dr says today
