Continuous pain in my legs

NoGwenItsABoxingDayTrifle · 05/02/2025 18:10

I've made another doctors appointment for three weeks time but this has been going on for 4 years now with no explanation.
I have continuous pain in my calves, some days are worse than others but it's always there.
It feels like when you've done loads of exercise and you've ripped your muscles. It started in 2021 and I've been to the doctors about it but they can't find a reason.
Ruled out clots, circulation problems, deep vein thrombosis.
I'm 42 I don't smoke, rarely drink alcohol, size 12, work full time and am on my feet a lot, normally end the day on around 20 thousand steps.
I don't know if this matters but the last few years have been very stressful.. police investigations and a trial about abuse from my childhood. Can long term stress cause chronic pain, and if so how do you recover from it?
Any advice welcome, today has been awful and I'm in agony.

Also those with fibromyalgia, have you found anything that helps?

I'll be interested to see what the dr says today

The doctor appointment isn't until the 17th.

Fibromyalgia is currently a disease of elimination - if nothing else is identified, they may consider fibro. There are no tests to confirm it unfortunately.

Have you seen a physiotherapist or podiatrist?

MinnieCauldwell · 06/02/2025 08:12

I note you said you wear Sketchers? I got some ax everyone raved about how comfy they were, within about a week I developed stiff, painful calves, I stopped wearing them and the pain disappeared after a few days. I don't think those memory foam soles supported in the right way.

Def try magnesium but make sure no nasty fillers and a decent brand.

I've got a physiotherapist appointment at the same time as the doctors on the 17th.

Hopefully you get some answers. I'm sick and tired of it now, spent the last few days in agony.

You should get your ferritin (iron stores) levels checked. Iron deficiency can cause muscular/joint pains. My little boy is iron deficient and experiences leg pains

Sorry to hijack the thread but has your son been tested for Coeliac disease? It’s a very common but under diagnosed reason for children to be iron deficient. The leg pain could be gluten neuropathy.

I had continuous pain in the back of my legs, it turned out to be caused by issues with my back. Had blood tests and x-rays which didn't show anything, went to a physiotherapist who asked the doctor to order an MRI which showed the issue. Did physio exercises and it got rid of the pain (took a year and a half mind, but first started to help after a few months, it was a year and a half before I felt I was "cured"). Occasionally comes back (especially after I had a fall recently and hurt my back) but doing the exercises gets rid of it again

Thanks very much for that. He has been very unwell the last few months with stomach pain, fatigue, nausea etc aswell as the joint pain so it all ties in. His blood test was negative for coeliac but he is on the waiting list to be seen by a gastro so I will certainly push for it to be investigated further.

Just had my appointment, physio has referred me to skeletal and muscle department at the hospital and given me some exercises to do in the meantime.

Have they checked your vitamin D levels to see if these are low? low levels I thought could cause lower leg pain.

I get throbbing leg pains during the night, like a toothache-type pain. I'm due for blood tests in a couple of weeks, I may ask if they can add this on.

Retiredearly61 · 17/02/2025 10:31

A few years ago I was having pain and was referred to a podiatrist, I was regularly wearing sketchers and he said they were like slippers, comfy but no support. On his advice I switched to asics running shoes (I buy from their outlet), basically he said if you squeeze the back of the heel and it squishes in at all there is inadequate support. On the asics I wear if you squeeze the back it simply does not move

NoGwenItsABoxingDayTrifle · 17/02/2025 10:56

He hasn't asked for blood tests, just the referral. He said after examining me that he thinks it's soleus tendinitis.

Sounds like what my DS has, but his is his whole leg, he's had this for about 9 years now since onset of puberty. He does suffer from high anxiety and knows all about The Body Keeps the Score. He's had physio which does help a bit but it always comes back. I have told him to go back to the GP at uni and see if he can be referred there as his referral wasn't accepted at home.
He had bloods taken recently and they were fine. He can be a bit deficient in Vit D but I think he does take supplement, or he has in the past.
