On Saturday my ds10 came down with severe vomiting and diarrhea, after around 3hrs of this he collapsed/fainted on the toilet and we rushed him to a&e. He has coeliacs disease so we didn't know if it was this or a bug. Two days spent in hospital infectious ward on a drip, discharged on Monday afternoon and then Monday night my dh & I both came down with it so that confirmed it wasn't a glutening definitely stomach bug. I have never felt this ill in my entire 36yrs of life - no exaggeration!

It's been 3 days since my ds last threw up or had D but he's still very weak and fatigued, he's lost 3lbs (gutted because we've been trying so hard to gain since coeliacs diagnosis and now he's going to have to go on ensure), it's been 2 days since DH and I last threw up or had D, my fever broke last night, I still feel like utter hell. Really nauseous, everything hurts, stomach pain and gurgling.

It's been about 7yrs since I last had a stomach bug and it was definitely not this bad, how long until we feel remotely human again? We've barely moved from bed/bathroom for over 3 days ffs.

IME I think you will start to feel more lively in yourself if you have a good rest today and a good sleep tonight. But if you are anything like me and my DH, it could be a few more days before you feel like eating much.

Noro is vile. You all have my sympathy.

SocksForceFive · 23/01/2025 08:57

Have you got Buscopan? It really helps with the cramping pains after a tummy bug. Might give you some relief. Hope you feel better soon.

MellowAfternoon · 23/01/2025 09:05

Pepto bismol.

It hasn't been available for a few years in the UK but it has just come back in stock, it's on the Boots website atm and apparently Sainsbury's are stocking it too. I have just got some from Boots (I have IBS-D which is really bad atm).

That stuff works like magic (tastes awful and turns your poop black but it's worth it). I hope you all feel better soon.

Thank you for the sympathy, it is greatly appreciated. I had one slice of toast yesterday which went down great but then when I attempted to have another a few hours later it was not well received by my stomach 😞 DS is eating dry GF rice Krispies (doesn't like GF bread so can't have toast unfortunately). Dh is an idiot who doesn't listen and had a fucking sausage roll which he majorly regretted yesterday afternoon - that is all that's passed our lips in 3 days.

Oh I've never had Pepto bismol before what does it do? Stop diarrhea?

Oh god I hear you. Had Noro a few years ago and thought I was going to die. Couldn't even keep water down.

Dioralyte helps rebalance the electrolytes if you can get past the horrible taste. Then get some kefir or live yoghurt in to start repopulating your gut with some good stuff.

The only positive thing is this: when you start to feel better, food will taste amazing.

Just take it slooooooooooow 😂

Jonnycakes · 23/01/2025 09:23

Sending you my sympathies, I’ve had it once and it was the most horrendous time of my life, even worse than HG when I was pregnant. Take it easy, listen to your body, don’t try to rush things (I’m looking at you Nogods DH eating a sausage roll 🤦‍♀️)

Nogodsnomasters · 23/01/2025 09:28

When will the nausea eeeennnnndddd?

Thank you, we all had diorilyte while actively v&d but haven't had any since keeping water down.

Agree with you, I either thought I was dying on Monday night or wanted to die - either way.

Total sympathy - I've just got over this myself. Started on a Thursday night whilst in an apartment in Spain (complete with dodgy plumbing!) and spent a full 24hrs with the most horrendous D&V I've ever had in my life. Thought it was food poisoning initially, until my travelling companion started with it 2 days later, whilst mid air on the way home! It was a good 3-4 days before I could stomach anything other than toast and water without getting stomach cramps and feeling sick and, a week later, richer foods still aren't quite sitting right. First time I've been sick in about 10 years!

Oh good god, imagine having this on a flight and in airport, I'd rather be dead tbh. So glad you're starting to feel a lot better!

I think this is rife at the moment OP. I'm a nurse and everyone at work has gone down with something similar over the last couple weeks. It's like a game of last man standing!

Although horrible and drawn out, it should be self-limiting and hopefully you'll be feeling better soon. Keep sipping and hydrating, bland foods.
Buscopan if you can get it to help with cramps, and chill out with a nice hot water bottle on your tummy.

I really feel for you, nothing worse than a stomach bug and that horrible griping belly/diarrhoea that lingers.

JBJ · 23/01/2025 09:55

@Nogodsnomasters it was hideous. Thankfully, I was over the worst of it - hadn't tried eating though and had taken a precautionary dose of immodium for the journey home - and genuinely thought I'd got food poisoning until my cousin went very pale an hour into our flight and started feeling very unwell. It wasn't the best ending to an otherwise lovely holiday!

Hope you're feeling much better soon!

clinellwipe · 23/01/2025 09:57

My DS had a 6 day D&V bug with a hospital trip last week (I don't think noro as it lasted so long and we didn't catch it, think it was rotavirus). There's so much going round at the moment :(

Diarolyte tastes disgusting and studies have shown diluted apple juice is as good for rehydration in children - I don't see how it would be different for adults. So maybe try that?

Also try to avoid dairy as it's normal to become temporarily lactose intolerance following viral gastroenteritis.

Feel better soon x

Yes I believe it's rife here too, I'm in Belfast and the triage nurse at the hospital said that it was all over the hospital patients and staff 🙈 thank you for the sympathy, it's very appreciated

A work colleague had this over Christmas. Her baby grandson got it first he was hospitalised with it. She said she was poorly for just over three weeks. She said was in bed all over Christmas fortunately she lives on her own and she said she has never felt so ill in her life she is in her early sixties.

Eventually when she spoke to a Dr he said take diaoralite or however you spell it to help replace lost salts in the body (she went through about half a dozen boxes order online to avoid going out) and he also said to try to keep eating as not eating anything as most people do won’t help get rid of it.

Take care OP

Yes it hospitalised my DS too! It's a very rough one especially on children by the looks of it. They usually bounce back so much quicker from these things.

Yes, it's horrendous, OP. 😖
My late father used to describe it as sitting on the toilet with a bucket on your lap, seeing all the saints at once.
Your son is better now, obviously a coeliac disease would be a complication.
All of you are still contagious up to four days of starting to feel better.
Washing hands and not cross using towels, cups etc is the best prevention.
Also, everyone should prepare their own food for the time being.
🍀
Long post - but I'm shit anxious of this stuff myself!

Dioralite will rebalance your electrolytes which is the quickest way to get your body back to normal (electrolytes govern the transfer of moisture in and out of all cells in the body and affect digestion absorption or lack of).
I once swallowed some raw sewage (long story) and it was horrendous long after my body sorted the immediate infection, until I got my electrolytes fixed... With your basic dioralite. 😁

Do we need to keep taking rehydration sachets even though we're keeping down fluids now?

OP posts:
JBJ · 23/01/2025 10:15

I stopped with the rehydration sachets, but bought some electrolyte tablets that dissolve in water to take for a few more days.

Yes, after a severe bout of d+v.

Worse than HG? Omg 😨 That was 30+ runs to the bathroom and often unable to even keep water down, resulting in often 2 x hospital admissions per week for rehydration drips! So I didn't realise it was possible to get worse sickness than HG 😱
Praying I don't get Noro now. Perhaps I'll become housebound until March besides school run....

When will the nausea eeeennnnndddd?

Ask your doctor for some Prochlorperazine (prescription anti-nausea medication) it's magical stuff
