On Saturday my ds10 came down with severe vomiting and diarrhea, after around 3hrs of this he collapsed/fainted on the toilet and we rushed him to a&e. He has coeliacs disease so we didn't know if it was this or a bug. Two days spent in hospital infectious ward on a drip, discharged on Monday afternoon and then Monday night my dh & I both came down with it so that confirmed it wasn't a glutening definitely stomach bug. I have never felt this ill in my entire 36yrs of life - no exaggeration!

It's been 3 days since my ds last threw up or had D but he's still very weak and fatigued, he's lost 3lbs (gutted because we've been trying so hard to gain since coeliacs diagnosis and now he's going to have to go on ensure), it's been 2 days since DH and I last threw up or had D, my fever broke last night, I still feel like utter hell. Really nauseous, everything hurts, stomach pain and gurgling.

It's been about 7yrs since I last had a stomach bug and it was definitely not this bad, how long until we feel remotely human again? We've barely moved from bed/bathroom for over 3 days ffs.

It's good for all digestive woes

You can get prochlorperazine from a pharmacist without a prescription if you say it's for travel sickness. It can make people feel really sleepy though which you need to consider if you're parenting or if you need to drive anywhere. I took it a lot for morning sickness whilst my toddler was parked in front of CBeebies 🫣

Eumie · 23/01/2025 10:30

My sympathies, my family had this in early December and it was horrendous. I was the worst affected out of everyone, I felt weak and woozy for a week, lost 2kg, and at one point genuinely thought I was dying.

The only upshot was that I’d precancelled a trip we had planned and was able to get refunds. As if we’d not cancelled (and listened to my partner who said we’d be fine), it’d have hit when on the M5 with a cranky toddler in the car! Also it’d have been too late for refunds.

Pilgrimgirl · 23/01/2025 10:31

@MellowAfternoon Can you just buy that over the counter?

Definitely won't be leaving the house to drive anywhere. Both dc are 10yrs old so not small and dh is here too so I think I may ask someone to get that for me.

Thank you. A week does not sound good 😭 how long did the nausea last? I just keep worrying that the vomiting will come back even though it's been 48hrs since I last vomited. I'm also really weak and woozy, have lost 6lbs this week, ds has lost 3lbs 😞

Thank god you did cancel, I've also cancelled everything we had going on this week right up to Saturday.

Oh this is the worst. Norovirus make you feel like death would a welcome release. And, if you aren't the first in the household to go down, you get days of waiting for it to get you while you watch the rest of your family succumb.

It's evil and the sweet release of death would be preferable right now.

Full of sympathy but your title made me snort tea

MillionaireCaramel · 23/01/2025 11:10

This is truly awful, you have my sympathy. I think people assume with the D&V only lasting 24 hours or so you will feel better immediately but that's quite often not the case because you're so dehydrated and weak. It's worth keeping up with the rehydration drinks for a couple more days, and definitely cancel everything (there's no point trying to go out). Hope you feel better soon.

Absolutely, you hear 48hrs all the time and think great that's when I'm going to feel better but it couldn't be further from the truth!

My family member who I asked to go to the chemist for me said they had cyclizine anti sickness that they would door drop to me so I've just taken one of them and hoping for the best.

clinellwipe · 23/01/2025 11:58

Cyclizine works better and makes you less sleepy than prochlorperazine, in my personal experience ! Hopefully make you feel better soon

Oh good god, imagine having this on a flight and in airport, I'd rather be dead tbh. So glad you're starting to feel a lot better!

You'd be crop-spraying! 😱✈️

Poor you - all I can suggest is icy-icy cold Lucozade sports drinks - the mango goes down well when I'm nauseous - but sip it v slowly...

This too shall pass! One way or another! 😁

loropianalover · 23/01/2025 12:11

We got Norovirus years ago and we still refer to it as The Great Sickness and talk about it like we survived the plague.

I remember I’m a Celeb was on at the same time and just pacing the living room with horrendous cramps while watching celebs in the jungle, I couldn’t watch the show the next year as I was just completely turned off. Our last meal before getting sick was a chili and we didn’t make that again for about 2 years 🤣

JBJ · 23/01/2025 12:12

@HereBeWormholes I felt dreadfully guilty when my cousin became ill during the flight, as I I imagined the whole plane being ill within a few days 😳 Genuinely thought I had food poisoning though, as I'd been with my cousin and the friend we were visiting all week and there was only me that was ill; it started within a few hours of me eating wild boar stew, which neither of them had, so just assumed it was that. Mind you, I'm not sure what we would've done if we'd known or not been able to make the flight, as we had to be out the apartment that day and weren't in a touristy area, so no hotels anywhere near! Not sure my friend would've appreciated us invading her home whilst vomiting and crapping profusely 🤣🤣

MrsToddsShortcut · 23/01/2025 12:17

Oh I'm so sorry. Noro is horrible! When I had it a few years ago, I remember being on the toilet, in the throes of the worst diarrhoea I'd ever had (along with temperature, cramps etc) then suddenly & iunexpectedly vomiting profusely over my feet. Noro virus just strips away any dignity!

Take care and try and rehydrate slowly and carefully.

Fupoffyagrasshole · 23/01/2025 12:41

Oh op it’s awful ! I was off last week on Tuesday with my baby and toddler went to soft play - on the bus coming home I felt a bit weird and as soon as we got in the door I was vommiting non stop! My husband couldn’t get home to us for 4 more hours so I literally had the kids in my daughter’s bedroom which is next to the bathroom while I sat at the toilet being sick ! The baby kept coming in and climbing me and they were both rooting around in the bathroom drawers and bringing me toys - I just wanted to cry 😭😭
it’s just the worst thing ever !

my c section recovery wasn’t even as bad as having norovirus !

I hope you feel well soon - it took me around 5 days to get my energy back!

There is currently no dignity left in my house either. My poor DS shit all over my husband while traveling to a&e on Saturday.

My H had this start a few weeks ago - 4 hours after landing back from new year in Vienna-
We had literally been in the house 2 hours.

I immediately booked myself in the premier inn for 2 nights and after 20 hours delivered him very plain food ( toast and soup and crumpets) dioralyte and yakult and water outside the door for 2 days and luckily I stayed clear of it - he totally stayed in the room

He felt shit though for about 5 days but the D&V only lasted about 6 hours in total . I say 'only ' as was horrendous at the time.
