On Saturday my ds10 came down with severe vomiting and diarrhea, after around 3hrs of this he collapsed/fainted on the toilet and we rushed him to a&e. He has coeliacs disease so we didn't know if it was this or a bug. Two days spent in hospital infectious ward on a drip, discharged on Monday afternoon and then Monday night my dh & I both came down with it so that confirmed it wasn't a glutening definitely stomach bug. I have never felt this ill in my entire 36yrs of life - no exaggeration!

It's been 3 days since my ds last threw up or had D but he's still very weak and fatigued, he's lost 3lbs (gutted because we've been trying so hard to gain since coeliacs diagnosis and now he's going to have to go on ensure), it's been 2 days since DH and I last threw up or had D, my fever broke last night, I still feel like utter hell. Really nauseous, everything hurts, stomach pain and gurgling.

It's been about 7yrs since I last had a stomach bug and it was definitely not this bad, how long until we feel remotely human again? We've barely moved from bed/bathroom for over 3 days ffs.

I really wish I hadn't read this thread
. I have to go on a busy bus tomorrow morning.
Hand sanitiser at the ready!
Having said that I have one child in school and another in nursery so if it's good to hit the house this winter it will happen eventually.... 🫥

Wash your hands for the length of two goes of happy birthday when you get home from work and when you get to work off public transport. Obviously kids can't help it but try and clean the toilet handle, door handles and light switches often and if you do get it don't forget to replace your toothbrushes

My DS has been projectile vomiting since about half 11pm. 3rd bug in 4 weeks! What the fuck is going on in the UK right now

You are kidding?!?! What age is he? I didn't even think it was possible to have 3 stomach bugs in one month, you do have short term immunity to gastro bugs after having it so each one must be a completely different strain?!

I worked a night shift once on a ward when I had just qualified as a dr

It literally started on one end of the ward and one by one like dominos the others got it about 2 hours between them.

Then at 3am whilst getting ready to put a cannula in (I was setting up in the treatment room not near a patient thank god) with next to no warning I had projectile vomited everywhere and heard my colleague doing the same in the sluice. As I fainted I got sent home immediately and by 9am basically all the staff including the day staff who'd obviously picked it up the day before were so sick the patients had to all move wards, and the ward was closed for 2 weeks. Anyone who could be discharged was done so immediately and the entire hospital had to be deep cleaned I've never been so sick in my life.

In our case it was norovirus and a particularly severe strain of flu (2010) I was so sick and in bed for about 3 weeks

Holy shit that sounds fucking horrifying 🙈 every staff member will remember that for the rest of their lives.

He's 3 and this is his first winter in nursery. The first bug was only about 6 hours long so can't complain about that but last week was horrendous and then I guess he got a different one on Wednesday at nursery.

He's very upset bless him

Oh bless him it's so hard when they're little because they can't always give a warning so the sick just goes anywhere/everywhere. First year in nursery is so bad for germs, although my son's first year in nursery was constant ear infections, 6 in 4 months no joke back to back antibiotics and fevers 😭 luckily you've not caught any of the bugs from him so far.

I could have shares in clinnel wipes 😂 I lost confidence since my flight, I wiped all the tray tables, touch screens, hands a million times etc and still got it.. possibly someone actively ill on the flight somewhere though 😖

Sorry your little one is ill again, it must have been a rough month for you!!

4 days later and I am still suffering guys. I've had bad reflux all day (I have GERD anyway), I still feel really nauseous and although my stools are no longer diarrhea I'm still going quite a lot. I attempted to eat today, a very reduced amount but maybe it was still too soon? I'm now panicking that it's possible to re catch the same strain and I've got reinfected from my house.

Hi OP

When I had noro previously I had really bad reflux for a good week after - it was as if my oesophageal sphincter had forgotten how to work 😐.

It just took time, plain food like toast and crackers, and rennies/antacids.

I really really don't think that otherwise healthy adults would recatch the same strain so quickly - I think that would only potentially happen to young children, elderly, those on immunosuppressants etc.

I do believe you're over the worst of it and on your way back to normality

Daisymae55 · 24/01/2025 19:28

I feel your pain OP! Our family (household and my parents) have all had it this week. I started Monday, DH Tuesday and parents on Wednesday. Somehow DD hasn’t had it yet (but may still get it).

Typically my Dh and parents are pretty much back to normal now. I’m still nauseous as hell and am only able to stomach readybrek, water and lettuce (which is basically all I lived on with morning sickness while pregnant but definitely not pregnant now)

it’s horrendous! I also had to look after DD solo on Monday while I continuously vomitted and shat myself 😭 the most ill I’ve ever been without food poisoning

I'm hoping you're right but I don't understand why my nausea would be so strong again tonight, it literally feels like back to square one.

Yep my ds and DH have both gone back to normal now and I'm still suffering. My anxiety has gotten the better of me tonight though and I'm really panicking that I'm going to start throwing up again. Just don't think I can go through it all again so soon.

I've had it twice in 4 weeks and currently working in the norovirus bay at work, I'm scared 🤣

clinellwipe · 24/01/2025 19:48

OP as a fellow emetophobe, in your situation my body would definitely feel sick from feeling rough/GERD plus the anxiety. That's what's so awful is your anxious body mimicking the symptoms of the thing that is giving anxiety in the first place. I know it's easy for me to say all this as an outsider but I don't think you'll get poorly again.

Feel free to DM me if you're awake in the night feeling anxious or unwell - the nights are really lonely aren't they

RabbitsRock · 24/01/2025 20:36

Always wonder how people can be so sick - surely you can only throw up the contents of your stomach then that’s it? Unless the following times are bile? I had a horrible bug a few years back but only threw up once. Felt absolutely rubbish for at least a week though & had diarrhoea 😢

After you've thrown up the food you can continue to then throw up any water you're sipping or bile.

Nogodsnomasters · 24/01/2025 21:42

Also @clinellwipe how is your son doing today?

Through major anxiety google research, it seems that picking up the exact same strain (so being reinfected from your own household within days) is extremely rare and usually only happens in people who have defective immune systems and they didn't develop the immediate immunity to it. Immunity to a particular strain should last from a few weeks to a few months and any stomach bugs within that time frame are usually a different strain. Clinging on to this information for dear life. Haven't left the house in 4 days so if I had it again it could only be from the same strain.

Whenever I’m sick it will always be atleast 2 or 3 times before it stops. And yes the last can be bile. It’s annoying as I can be sick once but I know that will never be it! I’ll not be able to go to sleep properly until it’s happened.

When I had HG in pregnancy I was sick many times a day for months. Your body can end up really badly retching when nothing is there.

clinellwipe · 24/01/2025 21:51

@Nogodsnomasters thank you so much for checking in.

He hasn't been sick since 10am and no diarrhoea. But he's been really, really miserable bless him. The old me would be reassured that he's fine now but after the 6 day saga last week I don't have any faith 😵‍💫

I've got a stock of anti sickness drugs from morning sickness (I'm 26 weeks wahoo 🤪) which I've got next to me like a security blanket. Just hoping I don't catch the bug. Looking forward to him demanding cake again

SeaToSki · 25/01/2025 00:38

Its highly unlikely you have been reinfected with the same strain. There is a more likely chance that the acid from your stomach that shot up your oesophagus when you vomited has triggered your GERD and potentially acid burned your already sensitive oesophagus into a massive reaction and this is causing nausea. Can you try and sleep propped up in bed, take omeprazole, avoid eating or drinking for 2 hrs before bed and anything else you would usually do for your GERD. Then separately start yourself on kefir to help your stomach bacterial balance
