Please help! What should a tooth extraction clot look like??

Could someone tell me what the clot should look like I am worried I may have dry socket. It was my 1st upper molar on the left side and the hole is huge with about 4 tiny blackish clots and the rest is a yellowy white colour and the holes quite deep. I thought the clot should be dark red almost to the surface of the hole. Thinking should I make a trip to emergancy dentist tommorow??

Should add I had the tooth extracted today

it would be too soon for a dry socket. i had my tooth out about two months ago and remember panicking like you. the clot i had was white/yellow/red odd colours.

don't rinse it or use straws and you'll be fine.

yes it was a huge back molar, i posted on here about it, i was so worried about getting a dry socket too. just let you mouth get on with healing it and try not to look at the clot too much i made myself paranoid!

lol I have had wisdom teeth and other teeth removed before and never knew there was such a thing called "dry socket" and I was fine. Blimin internet.

You would know if you had dry socket as it is EXTREMELY painful!

Its reallly swollon today and still has only a coupe of tiny clots in.

Also afraid that the abcess is still stuck up there. Dentist didn't give me anymore AB's as I had already had a course of amocycillin and metrondonazole. I hate Teeth!!

Aye niggley pain. I still get the tickley horrid infection feeling every so often. Then I think but maybe thats because I only had it done yesterday.

Also, dry socket tends to affect lower teeth more than upper...hope that reassures you slightly.

I would wait, and contact the dentist IF the pain gets worse. If it is slowly improving it is fine. And don't panic, if you DID get a dry socket they can pack it to relieve the pain.

TMI I can see white yellow round the mindle of the hole the specks of blood the further down in the middle white/creamy colour in the middle which I am praying isn't bone.

don't worry! you sound like me i was so paranoid. the colours of the clot are really weird.

Yes I would leave it alone and just call dentist if you get a bad smell/taste or the pain gets worse. If none of those then the emergency dentist probably wouldn't see you, in my experience working for a dentist. I'm sure you will be fine

Hi, this thread caught my eye as I had a tooth out on Monday so I can really sympathise with you. Mine was a difficult extraction as the tooth had broken right back to the gum, I had to have stitches in the end after a lot of pushing, pulling and drilling. This was a new dentist as it was the first time I had been in years and she was really brilliant. I had to go back yesterday and have the stitches out (should have been Monday but its the bank holiday) she said its healing up well but still packed it with some kind of dressing which was soaked in something that tastes a lot like TCP. Nearly 24 hours later it still tastes like I have swallowed a whole bottle and is making me feel slightly sick. Mine doesn't look that good either but I guess this is normal.

Anyway I hope your feeling better soon and that it heals up ok. I've decided the best policy is not to keep looking at it, good luck.

Thanks for the messages all. Well its really swollon round the extraction site and still a tad painful and ticley but there deffo stuff in there so not dry socket. Just wondering though why the dentist never drained the abcess or do they just leave it to come out??

my dentist didn't give me any antibiotics meg and i did get a bad infection. if you can get some on monday

Just got in and logged on - Thank you I was doing really well until I listened to my mother who said I should start chewing properly again now it hurts from now on I will listen to my body and not her. I hope everybody else is keeping well.

I had dry sockets after my wisdom teeth removal - I had never heard of them before.

It was only because banging my head agains a brick wall was preferable to the pain did I realise it wasn't healing as it should....

Feels ok this morning am washing it out with corsadyl now hopefully will kill all the germs.

Not sure if you know this..but Corsodyl can really stain your teeth if you use it for too long (they go brown, but it can be cleaned off by a dentist), so just use it for a short while while healing.

..my poor DH used it and ended up looking like he had a mouth full of rotten teeth!!
