Has anyone else got this horrendous cold/chest virus?

Came down with a pretty bad cold Friday night. Unusually for me seemed to go straight to my chest. Barky cough, congestion, burning feeling in throat and chest. Today I can hear congestion in there. Now my 1 year old has it. Have a gp appointment today. I’m asthmatic so need to be extra careful. I’m assuming viral so not sure if they can even give me anything. Feeling fed up! :(

I have it too and have just flown long haul to visit family for Thanksgiving. I’m not even sure what to do about visiting with my family. 😳

I have this from last Thursday with fever and aches and it's Covid

MovingCrib · 25/11/2024 11:06

Hope you feel better soon both of you

Greentreesandbushes · 25/11/2024 11:08

Could it be Covid? So many people have it

CranberryHedgehog · 25/11/2024 11:09

I have had it since Friday evening and it's very rough. Hoping it clears soon as starting a new job this week!

Ohmych · 25/11/2024 11:10

Yes same here straight to my chest.

Gettingbysomehow · 25/11/2024 11:12

No thanks we dont want it.

shellyleppard · 25/11/2024 11:12

I had it for over a week. Ended up with antibiotics from the doctor. Stay warm and hope you feel better soon x

Womblingmerrily · 25/11/2024 11:27

All had it here, it went on for about three weeks. 3 are asthmatic

One required oral steroids to get it under control. Others increased inhaler steroids/combined inhaler to get through.

The sheer quantity of mucous was awful. It was coming out of nose, coughing up, could even feel it in the tubes to the ears.

It did convince us to actually have the heating on in the day, which we usually avoid.

sonjadog · 25/11/2024 11:38

I have just had this. Exactly the same symptoms. I thought it was a cold virus as covid has always felt differently when I've had it, but maybe then it was...

It has lasted a week for me, the worst was the first three days and then it gradually has receded. I am back at work today, but still feeling a bit achy and tired. I am also asthmatic but I found with cough medicine and my inhalers, I was okay. I felt dreadful though, worst I have felt for years. I hope you recover quickly!

Wannabegreenfingers · 25/11/2024 11:40

Yep, I'm going into week 3, and have just finished a 7 day course of antibiotics. It has purely been on my chest, with no temperature. I feel better in myself, but the cough won't budge and I'm struggling to breathe and talk still!

maybeinanotherlifetime · 25/11/2024 11:42

Yes I have had this - was coughing up so much mucus and frighteningly enough felt like I could not breathe at all (but not because of the mucus it just felt like I couldn’t breathe in general). local urgent care centre recognised my distress and got a doctor to see me within 20minutes but it was bloody scary. Gave me an inhaler and antibiotics.
im on the mend but I am paranoid of being home alone now in case I end up feeling that way again.

I’m just assuming it’s either Covid , RSV or one of the other winter nasties doing the rounds.

Thank you. I am feeling ever so slightly better today. Chest still feels pretty irritated and a bit inflamed but less mucous. If I start coughing it’s hard to stop as it’s soo irritated. Virus Kicked in fully Friday so it’s been 3 days of intense symptoms. Will probably need to work from home tomorrow as I can’t see this being cleared by then. Feel like I’ve picked up so many bugs from my 1 year old since starting back at work after mat leave never took sick days before - feel so guilty! Health comes first I suppose.

Yes I have had exactly this, in fact, I have been to the drs this morning as I am wheezing and crackling. For the moment she has said it is a viral wheeze and given me an inhaler but it's been clinging on for what seems like weeks now and is really quite nasty.

Badburyrings · 25/11/2024 12:00

Also OP I found bronchostop to be really good at relieving the cough. You can get pastilles or syrup. I totally stopped it in its tracks, I remember using this before and it was really good for the coughing (for me anyway).

Starry4321 · 25/11/2024 12:11

UPDATE - went to the GP. At only 10.30am this morning she said I was the third patient she had seen so far with the same chest virus symptoms. She said there is a virus majorly doing the rounds causing these specific symptoms. She said my chest sounded clear thankfully so has given me oral steroids to keep as a safety net incase things get worse (due to being asthmatic). No antibiotics required at this stage. I am also on Fostair preventer and that is doing a decent job keeping my airways open so will take more of that if I need it. Drinking lots of hot ginger lemon and honey tea , and trying to rest as much as I can with a one year old.

Hope everyone feels better soon ❤️

Hope you feel better soon! Nothing worse than a wheeze or tight chest. What inhaler did she give you out of interest?

Oh no that’s so like hope the antibiotics does the job. My aunt has had 2 rounds of antibiotics over 3 months for it.

Thats awful what kind of inhaler did you get? Hopefully it never happens again. Plus the inhaler should help 🙏

The blue one, salbutamol sulfate. I have taken a couple of tokes (ha!) and felt all a bit weird at first but it does seem to have alleviated the hoarseness of the wheeze (if that makes sense).

Badburyrings · 25/11/2024 12:50

maybeinanotherlifetime · 25/11/2024 13:14

Hi OP, it was a Ventolin (Salbutamol) inhaler. I am feeling a lot better now but on occasion I still feel like I have to try and gasp to get a full breath. Not sure at this point if my mind is now playing tricks on me in the aftermath of it all.
