diabetes symptons?

Hi,
My ds has been drinking unusually large amounts lately. He had a pint in the space of less than an hour. I know thirst is one sympton but can't remember the others. So could someone please fill me in.

OP posts:
SquonkTheBeerGuru · 26/04/2008 20:14

unexplained tiredness
excessive weeing
excessive, unusual thirst
unexplained weight loss
itchy genitals
repetetive thrush infections.

It has been quite hot today, so it is possible he was just thirsty.

Hope everything's ok.

mimismummy · 26/04/2008 20:14

Thirst, tiredness, going to the loo excessively (esp noticeable at night). If you are worried, just get him to go to GP (harder said than done with most men, i know). maybe something or nothing. Is there a family history?

shelleylou · 26/04/2008 20:18

my ds is nearly 18 months old so can be easily dragged. He has been more tired lately and weeing a lot more nappies have burst as they couldnt hold the amount he was trying to fill them with.

There is diabetes on his dads side of the family. Ds' granddad and a great auntie have it

I think Lloyds Pharmacy do a pinprick test - it may be easier to get him there than to the docs...

shelleylou · 26/04/2008 20:18

Thank you both

I'm not sure if theres a lloyds phamacy near me, loads of other chemists though but are mostly independant. I think ill phone doctors first thing monday morning.

mimismummy · 26/04/2008 20:20

sorry - didn't realised you were talking about your ds!!!!! Whilst the pinprick test may be convenient, you need to make sure you do it at the right time - do it too soon after food and the reading could be high just because of that. He could have diabetes but have you considered a urine infection as another possibility?

shelleylou · 26/04/2008 20:24

It's ok i didnt expect to ask what the symptons were for my ds.
Yes i know its based on blood sugar i can remember bits of it as a exbf had it and was insulin dependant. I'm not sure what it is at the moment that kind of sprung to mind as it is in the family. Will take him to the doctors then they can test for urine infection to find out what it is.

Hi Shelley
I've got type 1 diabetes like your exbf. I had all the symptoms described by others but they were very very severe, like i was drinking constantly and the thirst just wouldn't go away, and i had no energy at all.
Really hope he's ok!

shelleylou · 27/04/2008 19:10

Hes had about 3 pints of fluid today and it hasnt been warm let alone hot. All hes really wanted to do today was drink and hes been very tired. Would i need to tell the doctor what type of diabetes it is in the family and how long its been had for? Im going to take him doctors tomorrow im not waiting a few days for an appointment.

OP posts:
shelleylou · 27/04/2008 19:13

taht fluid is without about 3/4 of a pint of milk.

If you are worried an 18 month old might have diabetes, I think you are right to take him to doctors on Monday, it can be serious if left unchecked.

Spidermama · 27/04/2008 20:04

shelley it would help if you could take some wee to the doctors because then he or she can check quickly. They don't all have the pin prick test.

(My ds was diagnosed with Type One diabetes at aged 5. The other one is T2 and people tend to be older when diagnosed with this and it tends to be diet related so if anything your ds would be T1) BUT, it could also be a bladder infection? Urinary tract infection?

I wish you all the best of luck tomorrow. Hercomethegirls is right. It's a good idea to get it diagnoses asap if it is diabetes.

Here's hoping it isn't. Good luck and let us know.

Spidermama · 27/04/2008 20:05

Increased thirst can also be a sign of some sort of food intolerance. I find not many GPs are much use in this area so if you suspect you may want to ask for a referral or go to a naturopath.

shelleylou · 27/04/2008 20:05

I am worried about it, hoping its nothing but if he has then ive caught it sooner rather than later so it doesnt get too serious to quickly IYKWIM. My surgery usually send you to the hospital to wait for a blood test or make an appointment in another few days or whenever they have an appointment with the nurse. Its a fair walk from doctors to hospital but ive done it before now and will do so whenever its eeded.

shelleylou · 27/04/2008 20:15

Thanks for that spidermama. Ive got a pot somewhere so will put his nappy inside out with cotton wool in it on in the morning so i can get a sample easily. I thought type 2 was older people and diet related im remebering bits from my exbf from going on a course to help control it with him. That was quite a few years ago.
Thank you all so much for your help and support. I'll let you know what happens as soon as i get back tomorrow. First thing im going to do in the morning is phone the doctors.

OP posts:
paddyclamp · 27/04/2008 20:52

Whatever you do don't let the GP poo poo the idea that it might be diabetes. Don't leave the surgery till they have taken urine sample and blood test.

The reason i say that is that when i was a kid the GP sent my mum away 3 times and i ended up getting really sick and going into a coma. It they'd have done some simple tests when my mum first took me it wouldn't have happened.

If he starts being sick take him straight to A and E

shelleylou · 27/04/2008 20:59

I wont, theres diabetes in the family so it is a possibility. Ill dig my heels in can be very very stubborn. Thanks for the info about being sick i had no idea about that. Will keep a close eye on him.

Hes just woke up crying for juice. He never wakes up for anything like that and has wanted more milk aswell. I cant believe how much hes drank today especially starting to really worry.

OP posts:
Spidermama · 27/04/2008 22:36

Aw Shelley. There's obviously something going on. I hope you get to the bottom of it. It certainly sounds like you will. All the best.

shelleylou · 28/04/2008 00:56

Ive worked out hes had over 5 1/4 pints of fluid today. most of that is juice and just over half a pint of milk.

OP posts:
shelleylou · 28/04/2008 08:48

Ive managed to get him an appointment with the duty doctor. After being told i couldnt take him till tomorrow. I explained it couldnt wait what i'm conccerned he has his symptons and age. Receptionist didnt think it was neccessary to take him until i told her that ds's grandad has the condition. Got to take him just beforelunch and may have to wait around a bit but at least he'll be seen today.

OP posts:
lulurose · 28/04/2008 10:25

Glad you are getting seen today, my dd was misdiagnosed by the GP, they really should test urine (and preferably blood) to rule Type One out.

Let us know how it goes, hopefully it will be something minor...

shelleylou · 28/04/2008 10:40

Ive got a urine sample to take with me. So that can be done there and then. I'm going to insist on a blood test aswell as its most accurate i think.
I'll let you all know how it goes. Thank you all for your kind words and wishes!

posted on the other thread, but hope your appointment has gone ok

shelleylou · 28/04/2008 13:29

Just back from doctors the urine sample i took with me was clear./ Doctor wasnt happy at how id collected it (through cotton wool) so ive got to get a sample using a bag so it can be rechecked. I was told that it probably wouldnt be familiar more out of the blue if ds does have diabetes.
