Hi,
My ds has been drinking unusually large amounts lately. He had a pint in the space of less than an hour. I know thirst is one sympton but can't remember the others. So could someone please fill me in.

shelleylou · 28/04/2008 19:03

Hi Shelleylou, I can understand how worried you are.I'm a Practice Nurse, and I specialised in Diabetes. My advice would be to take him back to the GP's,but ask to make an appointment with the Nurse who looks after the Diabetics, this time.(if you get a stroppy obstructive receptionist, she'll be more than happy not to "disturb" the doctor!)The Practice Nurse can do the fingerprick test, will check the urine and can give you a blood test form. Alot of GP's arent as up to date with Diabetes as they should be,but Nurses have to regular updates, and have been trained to pick up on the symptoms more readily.Try not to panic.Watch over him tonight,if you are really worried, have him sleep in your room or sleep in his room. You will know if you need A&E,if his breathing is laboured,or his colour is poor ie. blueish around the lips and fingernails. If he is hard to rouse,AND doesn't seem fully awake. Trust your instincts.None of these problems will probably occur overnight, but get him seen by the nurse tomorrow, they are likely to squeeze you in even if they are full as you are worried.Good Luck.

Nursejo · 28/04/2008 20:17

Ps. If you get a earlyish morning appointment, try to "fast him" difficult I know, but it is more accurate for the blood test, you can always take his food and drink with you and feed him as soon as he's either had it,or the nurse decides it isn't necessary. If you can't fast him, don't worry as Diabetes will always show up on the pinprick test or blood test if its there.Just try not to feed him for 2 hours prior to the pinprick test,if at all possible.

shelleylou · 28/04/2008 20:19

I know there was a diabetic clinic at my surgery today. A few people came in for it whilst i was waiting for a urine bag. Im going to make an appointment and ask for a blood test incase its not picked up in his urine hes been like this for about 4/5 days.
I'm trying to keep calm and relaxed but hes a pfb aswell so most things are all new to me.
I didnt realise id be able to go to a nurse for this but it might be a better idea as you said its usually nurses that deal with it. Ill definately make an appointment with the diabetic nurse.
Thank you so much for your help and advice.

FAQ · 28/04/2008 20:20

have you managed to get him to bed shelley?

shelleylou · 28/04/2008 20:21

Thanks for that. It may be hard not to give him a drink as hes demanding it so much.
Is it normal to test for blood in a urine test for diabetes? The doctor has put that on the sheet aswell as protein and sugar.

OP posts:
shelleylou · 28/04/2008 20:22

Yes hes just gone up. He's really tired didnt wake up till nearly 6 after 3 hours sleep and back in bed with no complaints.

Nursejo · 28/04/2008 20:37

The Doctor may test for blood as in a Urine infection, you can pass "Microscopic" blood ie. blood that you cant see unless you have a Microscope.A urine infection can also be a symptom of Diabetes,or just caused by a "bacteria".

shelleylou · 28/04/2008 20:45

ok thank you. I couldnt work out why they were testing for that. It makes sence now.

paddyclamp · 28/04/2008 21:31

Shelley all this fartin about on the part of your doctor really annoys me!

How can they be so blase about this?!

Whether he has diabetes or not he is showing all the classic signs. I know i'm a bit sensitive to it cos my doc cocked up with me, but diabetes in children really was less common in those day (23 years ago) compared with nowadays.

Do you know anyone who has diabetes now? If so get them to give him a fingerprick with their blood machine.

What's his appetite been like lately?

Oh and the other thing, has he lost weight cos i lost over a stone in the space of a week when diagnosed

Spidermama · 28/04/2008 21:41

Shelley I'm sorry they don't appear to have the sense to prioritise a quick and easy finger prick test. He is indeed showing the symptoms for diabetes (Could be something else too of course, but a good doctor really ought to eliminate that possibility first).

You need to remain insistent. Good luck.

shelleylou · 28/04/2008 21:52

I thought of them as being the classic signs. The only people i know with the blood sugar monitors is an ex who i havent spoke to in a few years and ds's grandad might have one but he lives in brum so an hour away from me.

The doctor dipsticked the sample i took in so if it was a urine infection it should have showed up on that.

He has been eating but doesnt want as many snacks as he usually wants (doesnt always get them mind} He always has toast mid morning leads me to the toaster to show hes ready for it but didnt hasnt had it for the past few days he hasnt been bothered by it.

It's been quite a while since i've had him weighed . Although he doesnt feel as heavy when i pick him up and i can hold him walking around for a lot longer than i usually can.

paddyclamp · 28/04/2008 22:02

How long has he had the symptoms now?

shelleylou · 28/04/2008 22:03

I have text a fried to see if she knows anybody that has a blood monitor

About 4/5 days maybe a bit longer for the thirst and weeing. The tiredness has been more so since the weekend.
