Hi,
My ds has been drinking unusually large amounts lately. He had a pint in the space of less than an hour. I know thirst is one sympton but can't remember the others. So could someone please fill me in.

Did they do a blood test?

How is your DS today?

shelleylou · 28/04/2008 14:37

No they didnt do a blood test.

Hes very thirsty still and could wee fopr europe. Im thinking of taking shares out in pampers.

It makes me so angry they didn't do a blood test (T1 myself). If he has got early stages Type 1 it may not show up (but then nor may urine test), however if in any way dangerously high they would know immediately. As someone else said if he becomes sick or lethargic do take him to A&E. If his breath smells of peardrops this can be a sign too. You can buy blood glucose meters quite cheaply at chemists and supermarkets if you can't go back to doctor...(I saw some cheap in ASDA the other day.)

I do hope it isn't anything to worry about, but do be aware in the unlikely scenario it is Type 1 small children can go downhill quick. If he seems worse I really would take him to A&E where he can be checked properly and hopefully your mind put at rest.

Good luck

paddyclamp · 28/04/2008 15:27

When do you go back?

i'm always paranoid if mine start drinking a lot, i've come close to giving them a fingerprick test loads of times!

shelleylou · 28/04/2008 15:33

Ive got to get the sample in asap. Im going to put the bag on tonight so he doenst pull it off so i actually get a sample. TYhey will test it the same day i get it to the surgery and put the results on the computer.
Its being tested for protein and sugar which i understand but is it usual for them to test for blood in the urine?
My doctor told me not to give him juice when he wants it and make him wait!!! Surely it'll do him more harm whatever it is if he isnt given the fluids he needs/wants.

OP posts:
dilbertina · 28/04/2008 15:50

Is the juice sugar-free? If not I would definitely give him water instead (in fact I would give him water anyway). If he is thirsty then I would let him drink personally.

I would imagine the test for blood is probably a pretty standard one to try to establish/rule out what's wrong.

How often are you having to change nappies today? Is his thirst lessening at all?

dilbertina · 28/04/2008 15:53

One more thing....In the early stages the urine test may not give a decisive answer, as sugar in urine may come and go. Whilst not wanting to prolong your worry, if it comes back clear this does not necessarily absolutely rule it out. If symptoms continue with no other cause found I would insist on being referred on to a specialist, or bypass that and go to A&E.

lulurose · 28/04/2008 15:53

As Dilbertina says, undiagnosed children go down very fast. My dd was misdiagnosed and eventually admitted to Aand E in ketoacidosis. My GP didn't do either blood or urine test in the surgery, just said it would be highly unusual....etc...not to worry...etc....in his 20 years of practising he had never seen T1 in a child so young.... (You get the picture)

She is fine now (on a pump) but I watch my older dd like a hawk and would have no qualms regarding blood testing her at home if I was worried, its a quick painless test.

I'm sure your little one will be fine, but just wanted to warn you GPs aren't always that clued up with little ones and T1.

LR x

shelleylou · 28/04/2008 16:03

Dilbertina, I only ever buy sugar free juice. I've tried giving him water and he would rather refuse it. I think hes had around 6 nappy changes. His thirst isn't lessening. Ive put him down for a sleep i dont think im quite convince by the doctor. He was in quite a foul mood, the woman that went in before me with her kids warned me.
As he dip sticked the first sample he would have told me if he had a urine infection so i think its safe to say he hasnt got one of those. Im going to worry until i have a diagnosis of one thing or another. Ds doesnt drink to this extent so something is going wrong somewhere.

LR doctor told me it would be unusual but if he does has it, it isnt linked to his grandads diabeties or would be very unlikely as its on him that has it. Told me i did the right thing by taking him to get checked out. I'm watching him like a hawk.

Its a shame i wasnt in contact with my exbf who has T1 could ask to borrow his bloodsugar moitor to test him myself.

dilbertina · 28/04/2008 16:20

Well, I guess maybe it's a good sign he's not so thirsty as to drink water!

Whilst Type1 or other auto-immune things can run in families it is also entirely possible to get it with absolutely no-one else having it. I am the only one with any auto-immune thing in my family and know of many other T1s in the same situation. Does his grandad have type 1 or 2? If he has type2 then it will be entirely unrelated.

Hoping you get some answers soon.

shelleylou · 28/04/2008 16:23

Im pretty sure he has T1 im sure i remember him excusing himself from our company to inject himself. I wouldnt know for sure without phoning my ex (ds's dad) or ds's grandfather. There doesnt seam much point in me making that phone call untill i need to let him know what it is. Hes lives quite a distance so couldnt do anything to help and also hasnt seen ds since before easter. If something happens that he needs to know i will inform him.

OP posts:
shelleylou · 28/04/2008 16:24

He takes water then spits it out if its in his beaker but he's been drinking bath water!

OP posts:
dilbertina · 28/04/2008 17:12

hmm, funny how all children seem to rate bath water so highly!

Sometimes you may have to do injections with type2. Regardless, it sounds like you're doing all you can (gp allowing!)and handling it brilliantly - far more calmly than I would!

Although I think it's worth repeating...if you feel he is getting worse in any way I would bypass doctor and head to A&E.

shelleylou · 28/04/2008 17:19

I think its coming across as calm on here but im really not. Havent been this worried/frantic about his health since he was hospitalised with bronchiolitus at 9 weeks old.

Hes still asleep has been since just before 3pm. He never sleeps this long usually wakes about 4:45 ready for his tea

I really dont know what to do

OP posts:
dilbertina · 28/04/2008 17:43

how about phoning nhs direct and seeing what they suggest as a second opinion? At least you'd feel you were doing something. And if the gp hasn't followed correct procedure they'll be able to advise you. Type 1 is fairly rare, it is possible your gp has never diagnosed it!

shelleylou · 28/04/2008 17:47

Hes just this minute woken up and still looks completely shattered, its so out of character for him. Think thats why im worrying more.

I wouldnt know what to say to NHS direct about it. Any ideas?

OP posts:
dilbertina · 28/04/2008 17:53

Oh they'll talk you through it. Just be honest, say you have been to doc but are still worried about your son and want advice on whether you should be doing anything else. they'll ask a few questions about symptoms and then get a nurse/doc to phone you, if they think you should go to A&E they'll tell you...

shelleylou · 28/04/2008 17:54

ive phoned them before but not like this iykwim. Ds going to have his tea in a minute so ill phone them then. Thank you so much x

OP posts:
dilbertina · 28/04/2008 17:55

I'm feeling for you! Let us know how he get's on!

shelleylou · 28/04/2008 17:56

yes i will do.

OP posts:
shelleylou · 28/04/2008 18:21

They've made me feel like shit! :{

OP posts:
HereComeTheGirls · 28/04/2008 18:28

What did they say?

FAQ · 28/04/2008 18:32

oh no - what's happened??

shelleylou · 28/04/2008 18:36

That i was worrying for nothing, theres nothing really wrong with him take him to the doctors tomorrow and implied that i shouldnt have called as there was no reason for me to.

She didnt listen to half of the answers i gave. Asked if he was harder to wake so i said yes as i struggled a bit not long before ringing., "well i can hear him in the background" That wasnt what you asked me love!!!

She got funny as i havent managed to get the urine sample from ds (he pulls the bag off). Told me to do it to rule out infection. He had one done earlier that i took to the appointment so if it ws an ifection the doctor would have seen that.

Then went on to tell me that 5 1?2 pints or 2 1/2 litres is a lot for a 1 and a half year old to drink in a day. Take him doctors and ask for a blood test for diabetes.

OP posts:
HereComeTheGirls · 28/04/2008 18:52

Maybe she was trying to be reassuring and it came out badly? She obviously did take you seriously as she suggested you go to the GP tomorrow and also that he got a blood test. I think she just didn't think there was an immediate cause for concern. You did the right thing to call.
