Hi,
My ds has been drinking unusually large amounts lately. He had a pint in the space of less than an hour. I know thirst is one sympton but can't remember the others. So could someone please fill me in.

Have been watching this thread and am horrified that your GP won't do a finger prick test. Did they dipstick his urine - if so, did they mention sugars or ketones? Can you go back to your GP or A&E tomorrow? Sorry ... all probably suggested. My DS was dx last year at age 3 ... excessive thirst, wee'ing bucketloads, weight loss (which I didn't actually register until post-dx) - I took him to GP to get him tested for diabetes because that's what I suspected. GP was going to send blood sample away but I insisted on fingerprick test there and then - the rest is, as they say, history. Keep pushing for your own peace of mind. Good luck.

I live in northamptonshire paddy.

Ds feels like he's lost weight havent had him weighed in a while. But he feels lighter when i pick him up and can carry him for a lot longer without my arms aching as they used to.
Im going to try ad get to the doctors tomorrow. If not ill take him a&e or out of hours doctors

They dipsticked the first sample and said it was clear. The second one i have taken in is to be tested for protein, sugar and blood

I'm in the north west so a bit far for me to lend you my meter!

Spoke to the olds about when i was diagnosed. They said i drank 4 x 2litre bottles of pop in a morning!!!! Now that's a hell of a lot!!

shelleylou · 29/04/2008 22:42

Yes it is a bit far. Was closer when i was at my old address (lichfield)
Hes having about 61/2 pints a day which is around 2.5 litres!! its not a lot compared to what you were having but it seams a very large amount fo a 1 and a half year old

Well like you say diabetes or no diabetes, something is making him drink loads and causing him to be under the weather and it wants sorting!

Good luck tomorrow! Demand a fingerprick test from the GP and make a note of exactly what your DS has had to eat or drink in the hours leading up to it so that it will help them to interpret it accurately.

Anything between 4 and 7 is normal. if it comes back above 10 there's defo a problem

I took iun a list of what hed had to drink yesterday. From sunday and what he'd had so far doctor wasnt intrested. I know a few doctors in that surgery. Took ds to 1 of them when he had thursh as a baby and he was very good. I had an appointment with him a few months agods went in with me and he remembered him and asked how he was etc. So will try get one with him.
Ive been keeping a really close eye on what hes eating and drinking drinking especially.

I've managed to get ds an appointment this afternoon. Receptionist said they had no appointmes today and were booking for friday. I said I wanted my son seen asap told her the age and gave me that appointment. Its with a different doctor from last time unfortunately not with one of the really nice two i know but hes generally ok.

Yes best of luck shelley.

shelleylou · 30/04/2008 16:52

Thanks. I've only just got back!!
Ds's urine sample came back clear there wasnt any sugar in it. I mentioned to the doctor about diabetes insipidus. He explained that that is usually diagnose when they are older i.e persistant bed wetting. He sent ds for blood tests at the hospital stating worried about diabetes/insipidus.
I took ds straight there he was soooo brave didnt make a noise when they did it so i bout him a treat. I thought he deserved it. The results should be at the doctors at the end of the week.

Thank you all again for your advice and support!!!

That Dr sounds really helpful, and I am glad the blood tests have been done!!

shelleylou · 30/04/2008 17:21

He is nice seen him before for something ages ago and he is actually our doctor. I felt like i werent just being dismissed and being neurotic. Im pleased theyve been done. Proud that my little boy is so brave. Hes having a well deserved sleep lol

Great you've had the blood test done shelley. I'm surprised you have to wait so long for the results though. I would have thought it might be sensible for doctors to have blood test kits like the freely available ones which all diabetics have. They will give you a reading in ten seconds.

How is he now? It sounds like he did really well at the docs.

shelleylou · 30/04/2008 20:29

I would have ad to have made another appointment with a nurse to get a pin prick test so would have been as long in reality.

He's not so bad his thirst isnt so bad today so hoping thats a good sign. He was great for his blood test really brave i felt so proud.

Tried fill his dad in as he wanted to know and he cut me of half way through as he was ill and wanted to go back to bed. Funny how he said that after i asked if it was the tv i could hear or the girls Never mind his choice

Spidermama · 30/04/2008 20:39

It's a good sign that he's not so thirsty now, yes.

Sorry about the feller. You were probably right not to get in touch earlier. He's exactly the supportive type by the sounds of things. Good job that you are so on the case.

I hope things continue to improve for you and your ds.

shelleylou · 30/04/2008 20:46

Yes hes so very thoughtful. As long as its about HIM. He fogets i cant afford to keep ringing him on different days especally as i haven't recieved maintenance for over 6 weeks due to him losing his job and csa having to recalculate.
I do to, hes very tired still, fell asleep on the way home but he did walk quite a way of it.

OP posts:
paddyclamp · 30/04/2008 22:23

Hi Shelley
Glad they're listening to you at last! At least you will have a decision real soon.

I think there's a good chance that he won't have diabetes from what you've said as the thirst would get worse not better.

Keep us updated!

shelleylou · 30/04/2008 22:31

It was a different doctor i saw today and he could see how worried i was which is why he sent ds for blood tests. He's been more tired today so its a good and a not so good with his symptons.

I';m just sorting out his old clothes to give away/sell. Caant believe how little he was bringing a tear to my eye from memories both good and bad.

I will do, Thank you again for your support. None of you that have posted know how much it has ment to me.
