Mammogram recall

Mollylolly · 06/11/2024 13:14

Hi ladies, I am in a bit of a state had my first mammogram 2 weeks ago and this morning received a letter saying results are unclear so I need to go back for more tests . My appointment is on Monday 11th November so it's really quick which is making me worry more . I'm in Scotland so not sure if this is normal?

Did they say another mammogram or more tests? First mammograms sometimes have a recall if not clear - it's your baseline mammogram.

SoloSofa24 · 06/11/2024 13:18

Yes, it's normal for the recall appointment to be as soon as possible because they know how worried people get about it! As they probably said in your letter, most people recalled then get the all-clear, so try not to worry too much.

MovingCrib · 06/11/2024 13:18

Just to add, try not to worry too much. Hard I know but there is a high recall rate for first mammograms.

Mollylolly · 06/11/2024 13:25

Moving crib they just said a recall as it was unclear and need more tests .
Solasofa24 thanks that makes me feel a bit better x

I was recalled on my first mammogram, and mine was cancer. Best to look at it as, it’s much more likely to be nothing, but if it is something, it can be treated.

KnittedCardi · 06/11/2024 13:37

First mammogram recalls are really common because they don't have anything to compare it against. As time goes on they build a picture of what is normal for you ie: dense or cystic.

They willinely do another mammogram with a better machine, and an ultrasound.

I got a recall last time as the plates had squashed my boobs with a fold of skin, so it was unclear. Just that. All was fine.

Good luck. The wait is the worse. I remember it well.

Mollylolly · 06/11/2024 13:39

Potentially plausible thank you for your reply ,I am sorry that you did not get the all clear . I hope you are doing okay now?

Can I ask did your letter that recalled you say unclear?

I had this- was recalled after my first mammogram. They said one of the images wasn't clear. I had another one and all fine

hattie43 · 06/11/2024 13:47

Don't be alarmed . I was recalled after my first one because they don't have any previous results to compare against .

Mollylolly · 06/11/2024 15:10

Thanks ladies for your replies, this helps a lot . I already have terrible anxiety so receiving that letter today did not help.

It's totally understandable. I'd be the same. I try to say to myself 'don't meet trouble halfway' but I'm a natural planner so I always think what if. It's likely the first mammogram as a baseline isn't as clear as they like so you've got a recall.

MovingCrib · 06/11/2024 15:30

And by clear I mean easy to read

Pearl97 · 06/11/2024 15:35

You can get recalled as they can see something on there. In an ideal world they would do an ultrasound straight away to stop you worrying. I had to go back as it was a cyst but looked sinister on the mammogram. So as others say try not to worry too much.

Leeeeeeeeeeeeeee · 06/11/2024 15:44

I had my first mammogram last month & was recalled. Had a second more intensive mammogram & an ultrasound, turned out to be a bit of breast tissue that had flopped over on itself. I believe it's common to be recalled on first one as they have nothing to compare it to.
Try not to worry

spiderlight · 06/11/2024 15:56

I was recalled after my first - they just needed 'a bit more pec' in one image because the original one hadn't got all the way to the edge because I have tiny boobs and struggled to get into position. The person who did my second told me this as soon as I walked in (after the awkward laughter because she has the allotment next to ours 😳). All was well and I got the clear letter shortly afterwards. Hopefully yours will be something straightforward like that - she said it was very common to get a recall after the first one.

Mollylolly · 06/11/2024 17:43

Thanks ladies really appreciate you all taking the time to reply . I just want to get the appointment out the way as I know I won't settle till its done xx

Oh and my fat belly got caught in the machine and the nice nurse just pulled it out without saying a word 🤦‍♀️😬. So there is always humour!

Chewbecca · 06/11/2024 19:58

I have been recalled twice now, fine both times. Fingers crossed yours is same.

Mollylolly · 06/11/2024 21:06

Hi Chewbecca thanks for the reply.

Did they say why you were recalled ? Was it something they seen or they didn't get a good enough picture?

OP posts:
Chewbecca · 06/11/2024 22:33

Dense tissue I think, they wanted a closer look to be 100% sure.

applespearsbears · 06/11/2024 23:24

This happened to me at my first, they had nothing to compare it to. I had a thickened tissue on one breast so I had another mammogram and a scan and examination with a consultant and hot the all clear

Mollylolly · 07/11/2024 08:19

So I called the clinic to confirm my appointment and asked why I was getting called back . She said there was an area they wanted to look at but she said it could be absolutely nothing. Honestly I wish I hadn't asked now I'm so bloody terrified now .

I had this so I understand. I'd never been so scared in my life. In the end it was a cyst which they removed completely painlessly at the appointment. Apparently they are extremely common as you approach menopause and nothing to worry about.

LolaJ87 · 07/11/2024 12:23

@Mollylolly I had a breast clinic appointment recently after finding a lump. Because of the nature of my appointment, my mammogram was reviewed straight away and there was a node lit up on it. They did an ultrasound to check it out and all was fine, I was reviewed by a consultant and discharged the same day. Please don't worry, even if you have something there, 9/10 are nothing serious and if it is something to worry about then you want them to have caught it nice and early.
