Hi ladies, I am in a bit of a state had my first mammogram 2 weeks ago and this morning received a letter saying results are unclear so I need to go back for more tests . My appointment is on Monday 11th November so it's really quick which is making me worry more . I'm in Scotland so not sure if this is normal?

Thanks ladies I really appreciate your replies .The woman on the phone was really vague i really think results should be dealt with a bit better as it causes terrible worry .x

I was recalled on my first. When I arrived at the appt. The showed me what they wanted to check saying " we are almost sure this is a cyst but needed to make sure." It was indeed a cyst ( they tried to aspirate it but couldn't suck it out as was too sticky- said it must have been there for years.)

I have had two further 3 yearly mammograms and no recall as they already know what they found the first time.

Thanks for your reply. I'm glad yours turned out be just cysts. It's absolutely nerve wracking but seems to be very common to get recalled. X

This happened to me , had a recall after first mammogram and at the appt they said there was an area they wanted to take a closer look at . Had an examination and an ultra sound . Ultrasound seemed to take ages and the person doing it went out to get a consultant to come and look at it . I was really thinking the worst . They then did a biopsy and an had an appt for a weeks time to get the results . Got the all clear from biopsy a week later. So even if it goes as far as biopsy it's not always bad news .

Mollylolly · 07/11/2024 14:18

Thank you I'm glad you got the all clear . The waiting is hell x

When I had my first mammogram the woman told me that 20-30% of people get called back as they have no previous scans to compare and most of that 20-30% are perfectly ok .

Mollylolly · 07/11/2024 15:15

Thank you . Yes I've read its very common to get recalled x

I’m in Scotland too and got recalled. Had to get an ultrasound scan. Turned out to be a cyst. If this wasn’t confirmed on the ultrasound the next step would have been a biopsy.

Hope it all goes well for you. It was nerve-wracking at the time, so I completely understand.

Mollylolly · 07/11/2024 16:10

Thank you .

I cant feel any lumps and breasts look normal but I suppose that dosent mean much . Fingers crossed for a good outcome x

My appointment is tomorrow morning and my anxiety is of the scale . I am absolutely terrified. My thoughts are going to a not so good place. Xx

How did it go? I hope you were one of the majority of women recalled who got the all-clear.

I was one of the ones who didn't, but two years on all I have to remember it by is a couple of small scars (and some almost invisible radiotherapy tattoos) and I am absolutely fine.

fourelementary · 11/11/2024 13:34

@Mollylolly Hope all goes:went well for you today. I had a recall recently and it all turned out thankfully okay… had several more mammograms on the day and a few ultrasounds then a wee needle aspiration. It was all okay.

Poffy · 11/11/2024 14:12

On a first mammogram they have nothing to compare. Most recalls are for first mammograms for that reason.

spiderlight · 11/11/2024 15:00

I hope you've had your mind put at rest today

Mollylolly · 11/11/2024 16:40

Hi ladies, I wanted to come back and update you all as promised. So that was probably one of the worst mornings of my life .First, I was called in for another mammogram, and then 30 minutes later, I got called in for another one . Then a while after the second mammogram, I was called by the doctor and told I have 1 area that look suspicious of cancer and another area they are not sure about . All on my right breast . My life just flashed in front of my eyes thinking about my boys and my husband and telling my mum and sister. Then she advised me that I needed an ultrasound that would hopefully give me more answers. She said they are better at confirming a definite cancer. So she brought another consultant in to perform the ultrasound. By this point, I had tears streaming down my face. But this doctor went to get another doctor so now I've got 3 doctors in the room. The 3rd doctor looked at the first area and said it was a cluster of cysts, then the second area, and said another cyst. But then said there is a small shadow 10mm in size so tiny that she's not 100% about . But did say that it could be hormonal and that she wasn't as worried as when I first walked in. So, I had to have that bit biopsied and cysts drained . Oh, and they also put a titanium thing in so they know for future reference . So after all that, I had to have another mammogram to make sure the titanium was in place okay . Then, I was told to go to speak to the breast care nurse. But 5 minutes later, I was called in again for a 4th mammogram . Then, the breast care nurse came to speak with me about taking care of my biopsied site . She said that since doing the last 2 mammograms, it's now a very low suspicious, so she is hoping the outcome of the biopsy is positive. I have an appointment a week on Wednesday for my results. I am hoping it turns out to be good news. But I'm not sure I can cope with the worry for that long. My nerves are absolutely shot to pieces . I just don't even know how I got through all that this morning.

Thank you again, ladies, for all your support xx

Sorry to hear it was such an ordeal for you, but it sounds like it ended on an optimistic note, so try just to keep that in mind until next week - I know it is hard!

I came out of my recall appointment with an appointment booked with a breast surgeon, even before my biopsy results came through, as they were certain from the repeat mammogram and ultrasound that it was cancer, so I think when they know, they know.

And even in the worst case scenario, it sounds like whatever it is is pretty small, so your outlook is very good in any case.

Mollylolly · 11/11/2024 17:15

SoloSofa24 thank you so much for your kind words.

I am so sorry you had to go through all this too and it turn out to be not great news. But I am so so glad you are doing well now .xx

Poffy · 11/11/2024 18:37

That sounds like a hell of an ordeal.
Like @SoloSofa24 I've had breast cancer. They were in very little doubt after the mammogram and even less after the ultrasound. The biopsy was really just for analysis.
So it does sound optimistic for you.
Try not to worry too much and take someone with you for the results.

Mollylolly · 11/11/2024 19:09

Thank you for your kind words Poffy . I hope your doing well now xx

Ladyswhatlunch · 12/11/2024 17:26

Sounds like you are going for a dreadful ordeal OP, but hopefully a positive outcome. This is the flip side of screening, yes it can catch some cancers early and that’s great and no doubt saves some lives but for others they can go through test after test, invasive procedures, trauma of waiting for results which after weeks of stress and worry turn out to be nothing. I don’t think the mental trauma of what you are going through can be underestimated. I hope things turn out to be non cancerous for you.

Mollylolly · 12/11/2024 18:33

Thank you Ladyswhatlunch . Yes it is a very stressful process but I suppose the up side is finding something that is very very early stages abd can be treated quickly with a great outcome. But no doubt the trauma it causes can be extreme xx

4kinell did you have a face 2 face appointment for results?

OP posts:
4kinell · 15/11/2024 11:51

I was given an appt for face to face results , but on the day of my appt , about an hour before my appt time I had a phone call from a withheld number . I don't usually answer these but I did on this occasion and it was a dr from the clinic saying that my biopsy was all clear and no need for me to attend . I hope your doing ok , the worry really is awful xx

Mollylolly · 15/11/2024 12:34

Thanks 4kinell are you in UK? I'm in Scotland.
