DS HAD TONSILS OUT TODAY!!!

Ds had his tonsils and adenoids out today and im a mess! He went down at 2pm and came back from surgery at 3pm. He had blood dripping from his nose and kept retching on blood from his throat! He was dosed up on morphine and although asleep he kept screaming and shouting stuff and seemed delerious! I hated seeing him like this. By 5.30 the other 2 children who had gone down after him were sat up in bed and eating mash potatoe but ds was still out of it! Nurse came and tried to take temperature but he really freaked out and she said he had a high temp! When she tried to administer calpol he refused and had to have a suppository. I was in tears and had to leave him with his daddy.

dh has just rang and said ds still hasnt eaten or drank but is sat up and abit more alert. They have given him another suppository and have rigged him up to a drip for the night!

Im home with dsd and feeling guilty cos im nopt with him. Am i a bad mummy for not staying with him?

Don't feel guily bonkerz, he'll be fast asleep soon and won't care who's there for him.

Both my ds's had tonsils/adenoids out plus grommits and ds2 was particularly bloody. I'm sure he'll be much brighter by the morning and probably complaining because they like them to eat toast with crusts which can't be very pleasant.

Hope you can bring him home tomorrow.

You are absolutely not a bad mom. I was at home with my youngest and my husband stayed with my eldest when he had his tonsils and adenoids removed. My son's recovery sounds just like your son - had the suppositories and the drip. I was frantic with worry, but the operation was very much worth it.

He'll be much better soon. Ease the trauma by giving both you and him liberal amounts of ice lollies, telly and cuddles when he comes home. Worked for me at any rate!

I like the sound of that! I had been worried that i had made him have the operation unnecessarily but the surgeon said ds had abnormally large adenoids and they would have eventually blocked his nose permanently so am now relieved i forced the issue!

Dh said when he rang that ds hadnt even asked for me so maybe i need to relax and have confidence in my dh and his ability to care for our son!

Why did he have them out? Breathing issues? My son had the op for those and it's great, if a little scary -- you're not going to be able to hear his breathing from the next room anymore. It's normal, don't worry! We kept checking him in the night it was so weird to not hear him.

Agree that a glass of wine is advised tonight!

ds had to have the operation as he has had reoccuring infections and snores, has bad breath, and breathes very heavily also he shouts alot!!!!!

Im glad he has had the operation and last night when dh rang he said that ds had been put on a drip and was becoming more alert (that was at 9pm!) Am off to the hospital in a minute and will take skips etc to try and tempt him to eat!

Will let you all know later if he gets discharged!

BTW, couldnt have a drink last night due to being 10 weeks pregnant!

Oh no! I shouldn't have read this.
My ds is due to have his tonsil & adenoids out and grommits on the 18th of this month & I was in a state about it b4 I read this, now I want to cancel his op!
I can't put him through that!

Blueteddy ........please don't be put off, it really is worth it in the end and some children (my ds1 for example) have no problems whatsoever.

I think it is because he has been quite well since August & I am kidding myself that he may have outgrown it!
I just hate the thought of putting him through the operation & just know I will be a wreck!

How old is he blueteddy?

blueteddy Its not pleasant, I had mine done last year, but worth it if he has problems. Ask to speak to the ENT consultant if you are worried.

Don't be put off - DD1 had the op. and was up and about the next day, eating normally. We're waiting for a date for DD2 to have the same. We saw the ENT just before Christmas, but we need to see the Audiologist before the op. because the ENT consultant has concerns about her hearing.

It is worth it in the end - the difference in DD1s quality of life was incredible!

He is 5 & has had constant tonsil & adenoid problems since he was 2.
This is the longest that he has gone without having tonsilitas (could sometimes be as little as 4 wks) but I don't know if it is because I have given him an actimel drink with his lunch every day since he started school in September.
He gets very poorly with his tonsils & often has stomach pains & vomiting when he has an attack.
He also snores a lot (worse when he is suffering) & has fluid in both ears.
I know that he should have it done & it was me who pushed for it to be done, but I am worried now about putting him through the op

He is going for the pre op on the 11th Jan.
Maybe I will ask the specialist what he thinks then.

blueteddy, although my ds is poorly with it i dont regret making him have the operation! I know it is the best thing for him and already ive noticed his breathing is alot quieter and no snoring last night!!!

Ds has not drank anything yet but has eaten this morning! He isnt speaking either but i think thats cos his throats sore! He is now tucked up in bed and im sure he will be for a few days! He does keep bringing up ooozy stuff and spitting it out poor thing!

Atleast he is home now and i can relax a little!

Oh, I don't know what to do!
How long do you have to keep them inside for after the op?

DD1 stayed in hospital overnight, came home and stayed indoors for a couple of days, after which time she started playing outside in the garden (was summer when she had her op.).

Your DS1 will be told to stay off nursery/school for 2 weeks - because of the risk of infection from the other kids.

I thought it was probably 2 weeks b4 he can return to school, but keeping him housebound would send both of us crazy!

well ds is still not good! Had no fluids at all up till 10 mins ago when cruel dh and i syringed 10ml into his mouth and made him swallow!

The doctor has told us that ds can go back to school a week on monday so only one week off school and has to stay in doors for 2-3 days.

Only 1 week off school?
I presumed that it was 2.
Still not sure if I should put back my ds's op.

The Consultant we saw with DD2 just before Christmas said she needed 2 weeks at home. DH had his op. done in April and he had to stay off for 2 weeks.

I suppose it depends on Consultants/Health Trust policies etc.

Funnily enough, since posting earlier, Audiologist rang (very surprised for a Sat. afternoon!) and we have an appointment with her at 8am on 18 Jan. This is to confirm the extent of DD2s hearing loss/problems and then the ENT Consultant can decide what to do with her ears before he takes her in for the tonsils/adenoids.

Actually agree with your DH - it may be cruel but it's essential that your DS1 starts eating/drinking properly - not for the dehydration side of it - but it will help the healing of the throat.

DD1 had to drink so much and eat so much before she was let out of hospital.
