Bulging disc

Tink8607 · 12/10/2024 19:11

I have suspected bulging disc and piriformis syndrome. From previous posts I'm seeing alot of people say to walk walk walk, I cant walk with out my crutches. I'm so anxious that I will never get better I've been off work now for 8 weeks but in pain for 11. I don't know how I've done it. Please tell me it gets better, I really don't want injections or surgery I suffer with anxiety and this is just absolutely freaking me out. How long did it take you to recover? And is it possible to do without medical intervention?

@Rubiscoisfantastic did the injection work

@Deedoo unfortunately it didn’t make any difference at all. I was back to normal by around March/April, mostly just because of time. I haven’t found anything that actually helps improve the problem other than just waiting it out.

Deedoo · 22/07/2025 17:29

@26dX sad for say nhs are awful sorry to hear

Deedoo · 22/07/2025 17:29

I had physio which was absolutely useless. I paid a fortune for osteopathy with shock wave therapy - also useless. I honestly think it’s just a matter of time. I’m going to the gym now and trying to strengthen my core.

Rubiscoisfantastic · 22/07/2025 17:35

Surgery has never been on offer to me. I have been debilitated twice with the same problem for about 8 months each time.

Deedoo · 22/07/2025 17:48

@Rubiscoisfantastic iv had mine since October last year I do so much physio it's a complete waste as I get more pain

Deedoo · 22/07/2025 17:49

@Rubiscoisfantastic did you avoid anything ? I think all the exercises make me worse

I can. It was Rodney Laing. One of his operations was shown on ‘Surgeons at the Edge of Life’ which is on the iPlayer.

Deedoo · 22/07/2025 18:17

@SweetFancyMoses was it key hole surgery

justasking111 · 22/07/2025 19:49

Two years in. Went back to the consultant. He saw me shuffle in on sticks. Decided that it wasn't my back but hips. Sent me for an x-ray. Results right hip bone on bone. Left hip severely inflamed.

No wonder that the physio wasn't helping.

I'm now facing two hip surgeries. I do wonder if it isn't all connected.

Deedoo · 22/07/2025 20:01

@SweetFancyMoses sorry what level was the surgery was it l5/s1 or more higher up

Martymcfly24 · 22/07/2025 20:05

Sorry I don't know if I posted on this thread it could have been under a different name. I had the surgery on L4L5 in May (pain began in jan) but this was in Ireland.

My surgery wasn't keyhole ( scar is about 5cm)and I was two weeks completely on the flat of my back but it was a complete success. It was carried out by a neurosurgeon.

26dX · 22/07/2025 20:06

@Martymcfly24 wow! My dads been suffering for about a year now and it’s gotten so much worse within 12 weeks I don’t know how much more he’ll be able to take 🫠

Martymcfly24 · 22/07/2025 20:12

Oh the poor guy. I had a 13 month old at the time and I genuinely thought I would collapse from the pain. I didn't sleep or eat.

I paid for a private MRI but the rest was through the public system. The surgeon when he saw them said there was nothing.. physio injections etc that would fix this and I was in danger of nerve damage.

As I said recovery was tough but I had another baby since and it was around 11 years ago .

My friends dad was crying with the pain was taken to hospital, blue lighted to another hospital. Went into surgery within an hour or two.

Seriously take him to A&E loss of feeling is very serious.

@Deedoo I tried to avoid moving too much. Easier said than done as a teacher. I just hobbled around on crutches and sat down as much as possible. Eventually the pain receded up my leg, until it went altogether. I lived on cocodamol for most of the time.
My back occasionally twinges, and I am very paranoid about it going again.
I have remained on the hospital ‘books’ so I don’t need to go through the referral process again. I can just call them and make an appointment directly.

26dX · 22/07/2025 21:51

@justasking111 A&E posted on Facebook it’s too busy there. Tbh I think I might end up calling him an ambulance. Thank you! Poor sod just feels hopeless he’s only 66 and my mums been basically his carer now!

I'm glad you're calling an ambulance it really is time sensitive as my consultant told my husband and I just last week.

My consultant said they're very reluctant to do surgery it's a one way trip that's risky. They prefer to leave it to time rest and physio. At one stage I was more impatient I'm not now.

Yeah, dont get me wrong since this started ive never wanted the surgery route. But at the same time ive been housebound for the last 4 weeks, so something needs to be done. I was doing well with the physio and was bulding up to the harder ones im now at a point I cant do the basic ones.
