Does anyone else pick the bits of skin off the side of their fingernails and pull and fiddle at them until they rip down in a satisfying and bloody mess?

and could you kindly suggest to me that I STOP DOING IT as I fear I may lose a finger or two at this rate

I have no idea why I am indulging this bad habit so much this week. I have 3 on the go and it ruddy hurts tbh

it's not so bad as soon as you have done it, but the next day when you wake up and it is all swollen

apologies to the squeamish btw
thank god for 'hide this thread'

well yes, of course I was being tongue in cheek. I'm getting a little jumpy myself here.

FrannyandZooey · 18/04/2008 17:57

look look this thread is much worse

go and be horrified on there

OP posts:
FrannyandZooey · 18/04/2008 17:58

well, don't start anything with your fingers
OR EYELASHES

OP posts:
pointydog · 18/04/2008 17:58

as if

AitchTwoOhelicopterfraek · 18/04/2008 18:03

dunno, i think some people on here are quite literally for the first time in their lives finding out that something that they're rather ashamed of and think they're alone with is something that they share with a lot of people. i bridled at your post, pointy, until i realised you were slightly joking.

i'm amazed to find out that i'm dermatophagic (

FrannyandZooey · 18/04/2008 18:05

oh it definitely is revolting though Aitch, and I was expecting to get stick for the title

pointy I think you have suffered from winky minimalism

FrannyandZooey · 18/04/2008 18:06

"Calling a black person a 'nigger' can't be offensive to you if you are not black."

is this true? I don't think this is true

OP posts:
KMUN · 18/04/2008 18:07

Yes, think I might be cured actually. Where do I send the cash?

AitchTwoOhelicopterfraek · 18/04/2008 18:08

i know it's revolting, we all do. that's why it's not sensitive for someone to say 'ffs offensive etc'. does pointy think our mothers never mentioned it?

KMUN · 18/04/2008 18:08

Unfortunate cross-post. Absolutely not true.

FrannyandZooey · 18/04/2008 18:09

I don't think anyone knows I do this
my mother certainly never mentioned it
(mind you my mother didn't notice when i used to really self harm )

it has been cathartic, anyway

OP posts:
AitchTwoOhelicopterfraek · 18/04/2008 18:09

oh gosh no i think that is not true. if someone were to call a black person a nigger in my company they would presumably be assuming that i wouldn't be offended, which would be Most Offensive. or they'd be trying to cause offence, which would be likewise.

FrannyandZooey · 18/04/2008 18:09

KMUN we'll start a trust for finger pickers

aGalChangedHerName · 18/04/2008 18:10

Feck me those pics are vile

They look just like mine tho (the 2nd lot).

It's nice to know i am not the only one mind you. I have never seen anyone with hands like mine.

FrannyandZooey · 18/04/2008 18:10

well did I misunderstand that post about being offended? I keep trying to make sense of it and think I may have missed the point

OP posts:
FrannyandZooey · 18/04/2008 18:11

ahh look a support group

OP posts:
NotQuiteCockney · 18/04/2008 18:15

Funny, I have not found this thread curative. I had a small outbreak of foot-picking last night. I do sometimes lapse, but my feet no longer look permanently like interesting topological maps iyswim. Nor do I regularly bleed, don't think I've bled for years.

My sister used to do it, too.

Our parents never noticed.

AitchTwoOhelicopterfraek · 18/04/2008 18:20

this is depressing, from teh support group. they sound like a bunch of right no-hopers...

"People doing this (stopping biting fingers) are also doing these things:

adopt a cat
*
Help victims of Hurricane Katrina
*
figure out what i want to do with my life"

i mean, okay to point 2, if not exactly current, but adopt a cat first and then figure out what you want to do with your life?

southeastastra · 18/04/2008 18:21

i don't need a support group, i like doing it . though only concentrate on my thumbs at the moment.

stuffitllama · 18/04/2008 18:21

gawd it's a real thing with a real name
is there no limit to our self-analysis and medicalisation of completely normal offensive revolting habits

stuffitllama · 18/04/2008 18:23

someone even gave nosepicking a name

FrannyandZooey · 18/04/2008 18:24

maybe they will work out that what they want to do with their lives is adopt a cat?

OP posts:
AitchTwoOhelicopterfraek · 18/04/2008 18:25

i fear that is exactly what they'll do, frank.

FrannyandZooey · 18/04/2008 18:25

jesus though stuffit, some of those nose pickers had big problems:

"For 2 subjects (0.8%), nose picking caused moderate to marked interferences with daily functioning. Two subjects spent between 15 and 30 minutes and 1 over 2 hours a day picking their nose. For 2 others, perforation of the nasal septum was a complication"
