Does anyone else pick the bits of skin off the side of their fingernails and pull and fiddle at them until they rip down in a satisfying and bloody mess?

and could you kindly suggest to me that I STOP DOING IT as I fear I may lose a finger or two at this rate

I have no idea why I am indulging this bad habit so much this week. I have 3 on the go and it ruddy hurts tbh

it's not so bad as soon as you have done it, but the next day when you wake up and it is all swollen

apologies to the squeamish btw
thank god for 'hide this thread'

i pick at mine with needles sometimes. it's very relaxing.

CoteDAzur · 18/04/2008 17:17

This thread made me feel very normal, tbh. I'm with you all on fingers, scabs, and even blackheads, but... picking skin on feet and chewing insides of cheeks never occurred to me, not to mention pulling eye lashes.

SparklyGothKat · 18/04/2008 17:20

DON'T DO IT!! Dd1 did this and ripped her skin and then an infection got into the skin, her finger swelled up, she was on anti-bo. for about 3 weeks. Her fingernail is badly damaged thanks to the infection..

southeastastra · 18/04/2008 17:20

i know my picking limits sgk. been doing it for years .

FrannyandZooey · 18/04/2008 17:21

I would imagine it would be offensive to any normal citizen
which pointy IS of course

this eyelash thing is bothering me
that's for hardcore freaks

OP posts:
pointydog · 18/04/2008 17:22

It's offensive to me. Gives me the willies.

pointydog · 18/04/2008 17:22

yes, I am very very normal when it comes to picking away at bits of my body

pointydog · 18/04/2008 17:23

picking with needles! I'd grapple with you to get rid of those needles. yeeuuch

FrannyandZooey · 18/04/2008 17:24

so
why DID you marry him? is he a good cook? or kind to animals?

OP posts:
pointydog · 18/04/2008 17:25

erm

he looked pretty good, liked the Smiths and had a quiff.

That's how sound our marriage is

FrannyandZooey · 18/04/2008 17:27

no that is fair enough pointy
I thought it might be for some stupid superficial reasons for a minute

OP posts:
pointydog · 18/04/2008 17:31

oh I always think of long term prospects, I do

SparklyGothKat · 18/04/2008 17:32

eyelash pulling is called Trichotilomania, its an impulse disorder. Also skin picking is called something like dermotilomania

CoteDAzur · 18/04/2008 17:33

Do you know what 'offensive' means?

If you don't pick, pull, tweeze, or otherwise harm your own fingers/cheeks/feet etc, that means this thread is not even relevant to you, let alone offensive.

Calling a black person a 'nigger' can't be offensive to you if you are not black.

Calling all blonds 'dumb' can't be offensive to you if you are not blond.

In short, you cannot be hurt/offended if the offense is not to you.

pointydog · 18/04/2008 17:36

I am offended by the gruesome bloody images. In the same way as some people are offended by swearing.

CoteDAzur · 18/04/2008 17:39

SKG - I didn't know this was a 'condition'.

Dermottilomania

I don't know about that picture, though. Anyone pick the top of second joints of fingers?

This is interesting: "The disorder is typically found among females more than males"

Actually, I think this better defines us weirdoes on this thread.

SparklyGothKat · 18/04/2008 17:39

by the way, I have trichotilomania, I pull my hair and my eyebrows, used to pull my eyelashes but managed to stop that.

SparklyGothKat · 18/04/2008 17:43

yes it is a known condition. My mother has dermotillomania, my aunt has trichotilomania (as do I) its very common

CoteDAzur · 18/04/2008 17:46

You found the thread title 'offensive', not pictures. Get your story straight.

Fuck's sake. Most offensive thread title of the month.
-------

As thread title is not about you, and you have seen (DH's) bloody fingers before, I don't know what you are on about.

You see what you made me do? You got on my nerves and I picked at my thumb.

You want a picture?

Dottydot · 18/04/2008 17:52

This has made me remember that I used to do the eyelash thing a long time ago, but stopped - mainly because it doesn't hurt! It used to be interesting to see how many I could get out, but other than that there didn't seem much point to it.

The only time my fingers have looked unpicked was when I started on prozac - I was slightly spaced out for the first couple of weeks and stopped all my nervous habits. My fingers healed up and looked amazing (but not like mine). I thought that might be it forever, but after a couple of weeks I started again.

Dp is eternally disappointed that I can't stop - I wish I could but I know I haven't got the willpower to stop.

pointydog · 18/04/2008 17:53

I'm finding it hard to figure out why you;re so cross with me.

FrannyandZooey · 18/04/2008 17:53

is this argument for real, at all?

OP posts:
pointydog · 18/04/2008 17:55

I might get cross with you too

pointydog · 18/04/2008 17:55

I'm not sure.

FrannyandZooey · 18/04/2008 17:56

pointy I thought you were being slightly tongue in cheek about the offense thing
(I mean I understand you didn't like the title but I didn't think you were actually proper cross)

then i thought Cote was overreacting so much that it must be a joke between you two

now I don't know what is going on

it;s making me nervous and you know what comes next
