It’s a “should I go to A&E?” one…

Earlier today a heavy box fell on my foot. It was painful at the time but not too bad, I assumed just bruised. I’ve taken the dog out for a walk tonight. Foot felt fine whilst I was walking but since getting back it’s absolute agony. I can move my toes but it’s very painful. It hurts on top, underneath and at the side.

If I wait til the morning I can’t get to A&E as DP will be at work for the day.

Do you have a minor injuries with x ray avaliable? That would be a quick and more suitable option.

Lolloped · 26/08/2024 20:16

Have you got a minor injuries unit? That’s probably where I would go. Or call 111/do 111 online and let them tell me where to go and how quickly.

DustyLee123 · 26/08/2024 20:17

Take some painkillers, ice and elevate it.

BrendaSmall · 26/08/2024 20:18

If you’re able to walk on it then you don’t need A&E!

Underlig · 26/08/2024 20:21

If you phone 111, they can sometimes book you an appointment at A&E. Can you get a taxi there?

TheForgetfulCat · 26/08/2024 20:24

Do you have any bleeding/big bruise under the big toenail? That happened to me recently and hurt like buggery but no actual bony injury on X ray.

Maybe see how it is overnight and minor injuries in the morning if still painful.

I walked/hobbled around on a fractured ankle for a week.

This is completely inaccurate.

This really isn't true!! You could absolutely have broken/fractured bones and still being able to walk!

lunar1 · 26/08/2024 20:30

'A&E' is very dependent on when you live, if you show up at ours to get triaged to majors, minors, fractures, or onsite GP, plus a few others.

So if you've had a broken bone it would be the right (and only) place to go.

not so. DH broke bones in his foot and walked around for a week before going to A &E because he reckoned if he could walk on it them it couldn't be broken.

KimFan · 26/08/2024 20:31

Even if there’s a slight fracture there’s little they will do for it. Elevation, pain relief, rest and ice is what they’ll recommend.

Cinnamonbonbon · 26/08/2024 20:32

Our minor injuries shut at 8pm otherwise that’s where I would have gone. I can’t really get there tomorrow morning as it’s 45 mins away and DP will be at work whilst I’ll be home alone with a 10 month old. We could get a babysitter tonight to sit with the baby while DP took me to A&E but not tomorrow 😩

I’m thinking it’s probably fine else surely I wouldn’t have been able to walk on it with no problems? But it has suddenly gone sooo painful since.

Ice it and elevate it and take ibuprofen.

not an A&E job. Go to minor injuries of it’s kit better in a couple of days

I wish people wouldn’t say this. I walked home on a broken foot - I slipped sideways down some stairs coming home from a friends house and by the time I got home it had doubled in size - but I walked 30 mins home on it and could have kept going, yes it was painful. The swelling prompted me going to A and E - broken it in 2 places and had a cast fitted etc.

Op if it’s very sore and you think you might have broken it you need an X-ray - make that happen however it works in your area.

AnyThoughtsWelcome · 26/08/2024 20:33

Yes go to A&E. They’ll send you to minor injuries if that’s the best way to get an x ray. Sounds like you need to get it looked at.

mamakoukla · 26/08/2024 20:34

Get it seen to and X-ray at the least. If there are broken bones they may need reset (have friend who didn’t. It healed badly. Now requires surgery to correct the absolute mess of incorrect bone deposition)

Henleylady · 26/08/2024 20:44

I'd go to minor injuries with the baby tomorrow morning.

Itsalwaysthelasttime · 26/08/2024 20:48

@BrendaSmall I fell off a horse hurt like mad, carried saddle to car etc. Spent day visiting family next morning still hurt loads went to hospital tgey reluctantly x rayed it was broken L1 cracked straight across and still a cheese wedge shape now 30 years later on recent xray for something else.

Doingmybest12 · 26/08/2024 20:54

If you think its broken go to A and E, I had a boot and blood thinning medication , then further assessment at the fracture clinic. Was absolutely expecting to be sent away having been told it was just bruised.

Henleylady · 26/08/2024 20:44

I'd go to minor injuries with the baby tomorrow morning.

And who will watch the baby while she is in X ray? A&E is not the place to take a baby.

OP these things can get sore later on. Only you know to what extent. Try ice and rest and see how you go?

aodirjjd · 26/08/2024 20:58

a&e. Either tonight with a babysitter or tomorrow your husband has to take the day off work to look after baby whilst you go to a&e.

Brenda has her telepathic x-ray glasses on tonight I see. OP leave it until the morning now and see how it is.

Manyshelves · 26/08/2024 21:01

You don’t need to go to a’e with this tomight. Stay off it as much as possible and do as above. See how it is tomorrow
