It’s a “should I go to A&E?” one…

Earlier today a heavy box fell on my foot. It was painful at the time but not too bad, I assumed just bruised. I’ve taken the dog out for a walk tonight. Foot felt fine whilst I was walking but since getting back it’s absolute agony. I can move my toes but it’s very painful. It hurts on top, underneath and at the side.

If I wait til the morning I can’t get to A&E as DP will be at work for the day.

People are very blasé about feet. My DM badly hurt her foot and ignored it because she’s a terrible martyr. Years later she started having really bad problems with the same foot. Not just pain, it became so miss-shaped that she couldn’t wear a shoe. It was because it was previously broken and had healed wrong. She’s had two operations so far and needs another one. It’s really affected her mobility, which in her 70s has had a profound impact on her health. She was previously fit and active. Now she can’t walk far at all, she’s gained weight and her blood pressure is sky high. All down to a dodgy foot.

Make sure you get it checked. It might just be badly bruised but don’t leave it to chance.

halfshutknife · 26/08/2024 22:08

Does it feel better supported in a shoe? If so put a compression bandage round it.
PRICE. protection, rest, ice, compression, elevation. Minor injuries or equivalent for X-ray. Don't take anti inflammatorys but do take pain relief.

Cocothecoconut · 26/08/2024 22:14

Go tonight while you have childcare and transport

If you’re able to walk on it then you don’t need A&E!

Not so. I once walked around for weeks with a broken ankle bone.

Cinnamonbonbon · 26/08/2024 22:16

I am very pleased to say I have been to A&E and have been seen and x-rayed already! It’s not broken, thank goodness.

There was a minor injuries unit in the hospital which I didn’t know about, but only A&E can refer patients on to it. The A&E was heaving but minor injuries more or less empty hence we got through it all really quickly.

Thanks all.

Why, because people are using the service? @Cinnamonbonbon glad you're OK I hope the pain eases soon x

This is ridiculous.

You can walk on a broken foot.

Because people are using it for what it’s intended for? 🤷‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️

Glad it isn’t broken op.

lol. I walked on an un treated broken foot for so long it eventually healed. I definitely should've gone to a&e, having seen the X-ray via different injury.

No it isn't.

The OP is, thankfully, ok. But other people following the advice of 'oh if you can walk on it then you don't need A&E' might later find that they really should have gone. You only get one pair of feet.

Well done! Someone is contractually obliged to say this on every health thread, and I guess it was your turn. I’ll do Wednesday.

No it’s absolutely not. I had an accident at work where something really heavy rolled over my foot. I didn’t go to A&E but 6 months later was diagnosed with avascular necrosis - a fracture had basically interrupted the blood supply causing the bone to die. I’ve had to have extensive surgery, and ongoing multiple hospital visits not to mention 6 months off work and limited movement etc etc. Ramifications which may not have occurred if only I’d gone immediately after the trauma.

Manyshelves · 26/08/2024 23:34

It’s broken because people go for minor injuries like the one described.

Manyshelves · 26/08/2024 23:35

I said nothing about being able to walk on it 😀

I don't understand. OP went to minor injuries with a minor injury... what exactly is the problem?

Nadeed · 27/08/2024 00:08

Even if you go tonight, they will x ray and book you in for fracture clinic tomorrow. You would need to go back. So I would rest it tonight and see how is it tomorrow.

Cocothecoconut · 27/08/2024 09:19

We don’t have a minor injuries unit, or a walk in where I live. It’s either your GP or A&E, and nothing in between. If you went to the GP with a suspected broken foot, they tell you to go to A&E. It is literally what it is there for. It’s called “A&E”, not just “E”.

And … end up in the minor injury clinic, treated for a minor injury.
Sounds like the right use if the clinic to me??

MtClair · 27/08/2024 11:44

@Cinnamonbonbon very good news!!
I hope you are mobile enough to cope looking after your baby today.
