Twisted bowel?

Crycrycryl · 14/08/2024 07:46

I am aware that nobody here would be able to advise, however I’m just looking for opinions really.
Since yesterday evening I very bloated. I do get these quite often, always feel bloated most of my life ( I’m 51)
Had some red wine with my dinner and immediately felt familiar pain you get when bloated and trapped wind.
It got worse during the evening, have done my trusty stretches for in,,winding,,
nothing seemed to work., felti had fewer last night, chills, than hot.
In the night I had to get up around 1am, to go downstairs do some more exercise, managed to relieve some gas but it hasn’t resolved, It actually got worse to the point I’m not even able to walk or stand up as pain all over my stomach, especially around bellybutton.
Could this to be twisted bowel?
The pain is now everywhere, even in my back, up inside my bum. Don't want to go to Dr with trapped wind really.

You need to call your GP at 8am. You need to have an examination of your abdomen.

Crycrycryl · 14/08/2024 07:49

Even going for pee is terrible, as it feels the week can’t come out properly, being sort of all bloated there.. get collickypain all over my tummy now to the point of crying..

Definitely call GP. Or ring 111 for advice

JerkintheMerkin · 14/08/2024 08:20

If you had twisted your bowel you would not be in any position to post on here. I've had a twisted bowel - it's beyond horrendous pain. A twisted bowel would take you directly to A&E not your GP. Still get it checked out though.

Crycrycryl · 14/08/2024 08:35

@JerkintheMerkin thank you, that’s what I wanted to see if anyone had possibly experience.
Sometimes the pain gets totally like huge spasm colic running through my whole tummy.
I had some peppermint tea to see if it makes any difference, the pain little subsided for about half hour however fully bloated, can’t relieved it all.

My parent had one and it started similarly to op. Early morning was ringing to say felt bad, might not be able to join us, few hours later in agony and ambulance called.

JerkintheMerkin · 14/08/2024 08:40

@Crycrycryl the symptoms you describe are the same as I had after I had my op. Took years to settle down but I found that gentle yoga stretches that focussed on my core really helped. I hope you feel better soon as that sort of central pain makes your whole body feel terrible.

Crycrycryl · 14/08/2024 08:50

its just terrible, one moment it’s feels like I desperately need to relieve a wind, especially with the colicky pain running through and next second the urge is gone and I feel more bloated..

Have you called the doctor / 111?

Crycrycryl · 14/08/2024 09:19

No, just was hoping to walk it out! I called GP yesterday for another perhaps connected problem, they said just take Paracetamol, would not even give me in person appointment to see me.

OP posts:
Crycrycryl · 14/08/2024 20:24

still in pain it got a bit better around lunchtime, when a bit unwinding and poo happened however got bloated even more, like I can even walk straight, have to bend down, can’t get up of chair.
this can’t be trapped wind all this time! Even going for wee, feels like something is in the way, some blockage or swelling, shooting pain in bum, back, even my legs.

Have you had any previous abdominal surgery? Adhesions can cause symptoms like this. It can cause intermittent obstruction. If you start vomiting or pain gets very bad and can't pass wind / stool please ring 999 / 111

You were told to seek medical examination 14 hours ago. Why haven't you done that? If it's so bad that you think your bowel is twisted, you need to be seen.

Crycrycryl · 15/08/2024 05:28

Thank you, my nearest a&e is hour and half away as local one got shut last year and I have kids at home.I have a GP appointment Friday morning for different but possibly connected reason ( severe period cramps without bleeding)

OP posts:
OneFrenchEgg · 15/08/2024 09:38

Ok well good luck. I'm guessing not quite the panic you originally felt it you've left it 24 hours and more. That's good.

Crycrycryl · 15/08/2024 10:10

Well managed to got for poop and some unwinding so it can’t be the twisted bowels, have bad period cramps like mad. But still same bloating pain everywhere.
Put hot water bottle on my stomach last night and the pain totally was gone, however came back in the morning.
its now 4 days actually, started on Monday with heavy period cramps, that’s when I contacted GP however they said no need for appointment and to take paracetamol.
I never thought in my life to contact GP for periods pains but it felt like contractions! So painful, I could not take my painkillers as was so ill, however it went all after the painkiller and then the bloating pain started at the evening and now I’m on day 4! And I’m going away on Monday for 2 weeks to Africa on holiday!

Your travel insurance will be in question.

Depending on where you are going in Africa do you want to risk needing emergency treatment in an impoverished hospital?

What shape are your bowel movements? Normal? Changed?

Could be diverticulitis or a number of acute bowel conditions which all need immediate treatment. May well be just period pain but not worth the risk.

Go to A&E you need a scan.

8008Bee · 15/08/2024 10:34

Might be adenomyosis

I one day couldn't walk I was in so much pain. It felt worse than child birth. You also get bloating with it. Luckily my GP took me seriously and I had a scan where they picked up I had endometriosis (one ovary completely stuck) and adenomyosis which they said accounted for the pain!

BobbyBiscuits · 15/08/2024 10:48

My mum had a volvulus. Your belly will be very very hard and swollen and round. You won't be able to pass any feces whatsoever. You will feel sick and may vomit. You won't be able to eat anything. You will feel very weak and incredibly bloated and painful stomach.
If you think it's that you need to call an ambulance. It can be very serious if left for too long.
The actual process for untwisting it only took about 15 minutes though! But she had to wait in a and e for about 12 hours. Then stayed in the ward for about 3 days.

HarrietJonesFlydaleNorth · 15/08/2024 11:13

Hang on OP - you say earlier you have severe period cramps but no bleeding, is it actually time for your period? Because if you're mid cycle then presumably it's not actually period cramps even if the feeling is similar.

I do think you should have phoned a dr by now though.

Crycrycryl · 15/08/2024 11:39

@HarrietJonesFlydaleNorth well my last period was In April,
I’m in Perimenopause I guess ( 50 years) so it’s very irregular since last year, coming now every 4 months.
I’m don’t know when it will come on, could be today could be never.
When I first got the period pains on Monday I thought it’s my period as also my breast were quite sore for a few weeks. I took some painkiller and the period pain went away however the bloating started later on.
i don’t know what going on!
I did contacted GP when the period pains were literally unbearable, coming on like strong contractions, they said it’s ok over the phone, that’s probably my period and to take paracetamol.
They gave me option to have an appointment in person in 2 weeks time however I said I’m going away next week so they gave me appointment for tomorrow.
This was all before the bloating pain started- Tuesday, then the bloating pains came on Tuesday evening after dinner.
I even tried to book today into Sexual health clinic as one here is local, so I could be internally examined but no spaces.

@BobbyBiscuits thank you, I went to poo today few times, no vomiting. When I press my stomach it doesn’t feel hard, but I’m not a dr, don’t know how it should feel from their POV.

OP, you're not going to get much better advice here than to speak to/see a doctor. If it is something bowel related you need seeing & sorting before flying. Your initial posts read like a text book description of bowel obstruction, which can have many causes, including 'twisting' (volvulus) and adhesions mentioned by PPs, and loads of other things, some simple, some less so. Obstruction can be partial/intermittent so can resolve and recur a bit. If it recurs though it might not resolve so easily the next time. Going to altitude whilst bloated will be at the very least a very uncomfortable experience because of the pressure changes in the cabin (any gas expands and distends your bowels further), but could make things very dangerous. Having very distended bowels can also interfere with the mechanics of bladder emptying and that can create its own set of problems. Hopefully it was all just something simple and just one of those things, but it's a bit daft to be looking for reassurance on here when no one can give it and you're about to embark on a trip that could make the less simple problems a whole lot worse.
