How often do you vomit?

Emetephobe here and haven’t vomited in over a decade. How often do you vomit as in all honestly I’m worried it’s gonna happen soon as it’s been so long but I’m also curious to see how it varies per person and if people really do just vomit randomly or if there’s always a cause.
Apologies for the slightly weird thread x

Pregnancy, migraines and (when I was younger) too much alcohol!

RaininSummer · 04/08/2024 22:50

I think i have only ever vomited around 6 or so times in my adult life and that was mainly through to much booze with food.

Areolaborealis · 04/08/2024 22:50

I totally get this way of thinking, op.

Someone threw up on my bus the other day which is one of my worst fears realised. I've been too scared to get on the bus since. Trying to convince myself its statistically unlikely to happen again (I've only seen it happen 3 times in my 40 years of taking buses daily).

Going into day 4 and haven't caught anything yet so hopeful I'll be ok but its hard to overcome the worry.

I hate having this phobia.

Tarquina · 04/08/2024 23:00

Only twice throughout my entire adult life and I am 66

OvO · 04/08/2024 23:00

I vomit when I’m really, really tired
I threw up a few weeks ago after slurping a blue slushie too fast after eating nachos
I threw up a few months ago after accidentally overdosing on paracetamol

This year I think I’ve thrown up on around 10 different occasions! I’m clearly a delicate wee flower

Theres always a cause, you’re not going to randomly throw up, don’t worry.

Pinkplatter · 04/08/2024 23:01

Most recently every day for eight and a half months when pregnant (about a year ago)

ChubSeedsYorkie · 04/08/2024 23:01

I rarely vomit unless I’m pregnant I get terrible morning sickness

Namechangenoooo · 04/08/2024 23:03

Probably about 25 years ago when my children had a bug !

loropianalover · 04/08/2024 23:04

You’re all so lucky!! Can’t believe some people haven’t vomited for 10 years.

I vomit quite regularly, it’s my response to being nervous or scared. I’d say every 2 weeks more or less.

MirrorMirror1247 · 04/08/2024 23:10

Twice in the last ten years, both actually in 2019. One was alcohol induced (first and only time that's happened, lesson learned about trying to play catch up!) and once on Boxing Day night. I think it was bacon that may have been a bit iffy.

JumpstartMondays · 04/08/2024 23:12

When I had intense food poisoning in early 2019. All night long. Grim.

Before that, probably around 2010 after excess alcohol consumption.

Cookerhood · 04/08/2024 23:16

In the last 25 years, twice. Once through alcohol & once with a bug. Before that I've probably vomited half a dozen times as an adult, once with a bug & a few times through alcohol.
I only remember being sick once as a child, when I was car sick but I presume there must have been other times
My children have rarely vomited either, I think the younger two a bug once when they were about 6 & 8 & the older one never did.

Waitingfordoggo · 04/08/2024 23:19

Hardly ever. The only times I have ever vomited were when I was a binge drinker (so quite frequently in my 20s but not at all now as I hardly drink any more).

The only other times were stomach bugs and I have only had two of those in my entire 47 years.

I have never vomited other than in those situations so I imagine for most adults, vomiting happens rarely.

TakeMe2Insanity · 04/08/2024 23:23

I vomited every single day in my last pregnancy. when I finally had my c section, I thought hurrah no more but then I began vomiting while still being operated on and ruined my hair!

CaptainCabinets · 04/08/2024 23:32

Frequently in my first trimester (now 20 weeks and vomit-free!)

Last time I threw up prior to that was when I had norovirus in 2021 and spent 5 days hoping I would just die in my sleep 🫣 all the staff on our ward went down with it one after the other, it was bloody awful!

Lexigone · 04/08/2024 23:38

I hate it too since I was a child. I had some horrible bugs. Last time was January. I think it was a build up of stomach acid or noro virus. I wasn't feeling well at all then someone rubbed my back. Before that I can't remember, I think there was an incident when I ate two Krispy Cremes and my body went fuck that nonsense that is far too much sugar, that was a few years ago. Oh actually there was also an episode when I had codeine and painkillers and was just generally in a lot of pain after a procedure in hospital, about 8 years ago.

When I feel it coming, I either try and suppress it or I think you just have to go all in and make it happen. It's the in-between bit that I hate when you don't know whether to sit, lie, hover over the loo.

I'd say its every 4 years on average.

Upallnight2 · 04/08/2024 23:40

I'm an emetophobe too! I was sick aged about 5 or 6 with a bug which set of my phobia, after that I have been sick on 2 occasions, once at 20 from alcohol, and once from norovirus at about 26! I caught norovirus again this time last year and managed not to be sick by taking antibiotics but I felt so horrific! Now I'm just terrified of catching noro 🤢 Ds is 6 and only had a stomach bug once luckily 🤞

Lexigone · 04/08/2024 23:41

I feel like thinking there is a quota is a way of managing the anxiety about it.

Antiemetics! Bloody auto correct

Lexigone · 04/08/2024 23:45

I remember having a bug when I was sleeping at school and it was just so yuck. You'd have to get up in the night in the dark corridor and go and try and find a matron. No wonder I got scared of the dark actually.

Later on I remember throwing up and my mum was having a bath. I seem to recall I was throwing up cubed fruit having not eaten any (I literally can't have tinned fruit salad now!). I kept saying I hate being sick and my mum just basically told me to stop whining! I think I was making her feel sick but god it was terrible.

Another time I had a vomiting bug where I just threw water up but was at the same time extremely dehydrated - this may be all bugs but I didn't know at the time, was 17, so I threw water up for about six hours as I drank more, vomited etc.

Pretty sure no one has pleasant stories of vomiting to be fair, oh there was this one time and it was lovely...said no one ever! 🤣

IBegYourBiggestPardon · 04/08/2024 23:45

The other day! I tried one of those Nordic spirit pouches (absolutely vile)!! Went to take it out of my mouth and coughed and puked up into the sink. I normally end up being sick once or twice if I have a cold, from all the coughing. The Eurovision Song Contest a couple of years ago gave me a huge migraine which also made me throw up. Unfortunately all over my brand new carpet and also over my rug. I did contemplate on washing the rug in the bath but in the end I just chucked it out. Sick a couple of times during Pregnancy and the time before that other than coughing during a cold, was post lumbar puncture. I literally spent 4 days throwing up from the pain each time I moved my head. Even going to the toilet I would have to grab a cardboard bowl off the shelf and throw up into it whilst sat having a wee. The plus side I did lose a stone in those 4 days although it quickly went back on again once I could actually eat and keep it down.

CrushingOnRubies · 04/08/2024 23:48

Couple of times a month sometimes more. I have a strange digestive system which is under control most of the time but some foods alcohol or if I'm nervous or excited exacerbate things.

Luckily neither Nordic spirt or a lumbar puncture had that effect on me 😬 3 general anesthetics, none made me sick. Apparently a lot of people are sick in labour especially with all the drugs but was fine also. I remember them giving me some shot of anti sickness stuff though 😅

LiterallyOnFire · 04/08/2024 23:52

I threw up quite a lot during hypoglycaemic attacks before they were diagnosed. Now easily avoided.

Other than that, I don't think I've been sick since the last time I overdid the booze. About 15 years ago.

LiterallyOnFire · 04/08/2024 23:53

I'm not sure how you'll model all these responses into something reassuring though, OP.
