How often do you vomit?

Emetephobe here and haven’t vomited in over a decade. How often do you vomit as in all honestly I’m worried it’s gonna happen soon as it’s been so long but I’m also curious to see how it varies per person and if people really do just vomit randomly or if there’s always a cause.
Apologies for the slightly weird thread x

March this year - bug - nasty 24 hour thing.
2010 - missed dd's birthday party - food related - sushi
Before that - c 1995/6 bugs caught from the DC.

In the 35 years since we met, DH, never. DS the same - a bug as a baby - and that's it.

Lyricallie · 04/08/2024 23:57

All the time but I do have bad travel sickness and every time I get a bug my body seems to just react by throwing up. Why I do not know haha.

MapleTreeValley · 04/08/2024 23:57

The only time I vomit is when I very occasionally drink too much. Apart from that, I can only remember vomiting once in the past 30 years.

InfoSecInTheCity · 04/08/2024 23:58

Very very rarely, it's how I knew I needed to get to the hospital when I had a severe gallstone attack 3 yrs ago, I hadn't vomited for about 15 yrs before that. I had a major infection and ended up on IV antibiotics as an in patient then in emergency surgery when the infection didn't show any signs of shifting after 3 days.

spikeandbuffy · 04/08/2024 23:59

Also phobic
Once as a child
Once from alcohol
Once from norovirus

So 3 times in 40 years

@Upallnight2 the lumbar puncture is definitely one I do not wish to repeat! I was more than willing on more than one occasion to chop my head off. Although the pain was also in my upper back and chest as well

Sugarnspicenallthingsnaice · 05/08/2024 00:03

Many times from alcohol, usually the next day. I've since stopped binge drinking completely - 1 or 2 drinks and that's it.

Other than that it's extremely unusual. I can remember vomiting in labour in 2004, and with food poisoning on a Paris holiday around 2001. That's it.

Never had what you would call a 'D&V' bug - plenty of gastro upsets but not coming out both ends so to speak.

Filipefilop · 05/08/2024 00:07

I used to get tummy bugs occasionally as a child, had 3 bouts of food poisoning in my early 20s, but not thrown up since i was pregnant 13yrs ago otherwise. It wasnt morning sickness, I went out for a meal and my body must have decided there was something dodgy in it so when i got home it all immediately xame back out of the blue but i was fine after.

Also an emetophobe and feeling overdue! Dd has never had a tummy bug from school somehow 😳

fridaynight1 · 05/08/2024 00:27

Being sick is my body's first response to pain, shock, nerves, even some smells makes me feel sick. There is a particular perfume that makes me feel really nauseous. Sick before exams, my wedding day and the obvious one - morning sickness, also when giving birth. If I get a migraine I'm sick. When I broke my ankle I was sick. As a child I was always travel sick. I have diverticulitis and am sick whenever that flares up too.
Never been sick from too much alcohol though.

WhiteNegroni · 05/08/2024 01:08

On average probably once every couple of years. Always after fish or seafood. I love seafood and that’s the price of eating it a lot - some bug will get through once in a while.

StarCourt · 05/08/2024 03:24

A bad migraine makes me vomit every 29 minutes for 6-8 hrs.

oapcarer · 05/08/2024 06:22

I used to rarely vomit. I was also a fellow phobia sufferer. My last pregnancy with my son, 16 years ago, put paid to that. Now I don't try to hold on to it any more and, if I feel ill, I'll just prefer to let it go.

Meadowfinch · 05/08/2024 06:30

Almost never.

The last time was when I had a bad reaction to the covid vaccine, so early 2021.

Before that, I can't remember, Pre-ds and he's 16.

Squirrelsnut · 05/08/2024 06:41

A few months ago. I get 'sick migraines' occasionally. Once I've vomited I feel much better.

Nogodsnomasters · 05/08/2024 06:43

Fellow emetophobe here too. The last time I vomited was 7yrs ago, caught a stomach bug. The longest I've gone without vomiting is 11yrs. Statistically speaking emetophobes are less likely to vomit than the general population as they take more precautions to avoid it such as frequent hand washing, thoroughly cooking food, more intense cleaning and actively avoiding other sick people.

WhereAreWeNow · 05/08/2024 06:46

Probably over a decade ago. Can't actually remember.

lljkk · 05/08/2024 07:21

The solution isn't knowing it can't happen randomly... the solution is knowing that you'll cope ok if it does happen.

Probably 8 years ago was last time 4 me. I recall walking around Cromer for an hour while DS was at tennis or footie when usually I would have gone for a run, but I wasn't feeling well. When I got home I was sick then felt better. Like noro but not the usual noro.

When DC were little we had countless noro bouts...
When I was pg I could puke +8x in a single day. That constant nausea was horrible.

MoreCardassianThanKardashian · 05/08/2024 08:06

I often think of this question. Glad I'm not the only one.

I recently started being sick the day after drinking a good but not extravagant amount. It started off as stomach cramps and sitting on the toilet for a while and then changed to being sick. I started taking electrolytes and it's ok now. I think it's more the tiredness that caused it but it seemed to just make my usually very strong stomach very weak.

When DD was small, we all caught norovirus a few times which was horrendous but made me more comfortable with vomit. I'd say I was an emetophobe and now I'm just a bit scared.

Thats not the solution, because i know already i'll be fine if i vomit, i've survived it a few times, but still have anxiety and preoccupation about the whole thing.
