Bum surgery- is it really worth it?

I'm not sure what else to call it, it could be a haemorroidectomy but not sure as doctor has said it's more like a skin tag now.

I have had this pile (dw I won't upload a photo 🫠) for 12 years. It inflates and flares up then deflates like a balloon.

When it flares up, it can be itchy and sore; especially with a bowel movement but it's not AGONISING. It's just 'there' and annoying and uncomfortable. This happens every couple of months. I've done creams and suppositories.

My main reason for removal though is because it doesn't look very nice. I don't like my partner going down there, and I get all on edge when we are intimate. I don't want to feel like this every time, I love sex and intimacy but this just puts me off. I hate it.

I went to see my consultant yesterday, he said it was more like a skin tag than anything. He has seen the photos of when it is flared up. It's probably the size of a blueberry but deflated. Then it gets swollen when flared up.

I have heard and read that the recovery for this is excruciating. Because they just slice it off and that's it. No sutures etc.

The consultant said they'd give me laxatives and pain relief. But the horror stories out there are making me so anxious.

Because it's not internal and it's just one, will it still be just as bad?

The position of it is basically the nearest to my vagina, if that makes sense.

Do I go ahead and just put up with the pain?

It's set for the 17th July. I go on holiday for two weeks on the 9th August and get married in October. Will it be worth it? It is bloody annoying when it flares up and it is unsightly.

Anyone out there who's had the procedure? Any advice?

Thank you!

Ahh. I have my pre op on Wednesday. I'm going to go anyway, and see what they say. I'll tell them about the horror stories 😂 and that I am very apprehensive

It's really not been as bad as I expected it to

Wannabegreenfingers · 01/07/2024 14:50

I have the same, and been told it's cosmetic so the NHS won't do it. I don't have the money to go private. I was also warned the recovery is awful and they can and do come back. I've decided to live with mine. Luckily any sexual partners I've had really haven't been bothered. It does mean no anal play as the thought of something going up there then the pain would be intolerable.

It must come down to local area for NHS too because NHS were happy to do mine, I just opted to use my health insurance instead. I disagree with it being cosmetic too, they annoy me when they say things like that.

How are painful piles cosmetic!?

Wannabegreenfingers · 01/07/2024 16:52

I really wish i knew, but the consultant I saw properly put me off and since then, probably about 10 years ago, my local authority won't do it.

I'll be following all the rules. Feet on a stool when I'm on the toilet, no straining, loads of water.

How are you getting on? Hope all the healing is going well. My Pre-op is tomorrow. Just over two weeks to go!

I'm not doing too badly! I've been back at work a week on phased return with a RA to sit on a cushion etc... I've had some moments of discomfort which has made teaching somewhat distracting. Sometimes the area stings but I feel like it's all very manageable!

Your body must be porn perfect that a single haemorrhoid is making you self conscious! 😂 you must be absolutely stunning, if only a little haemorrhoid was my worst concern!

Everyone is different and I don't think it has anything to do with being "porn perfect"

My surgery date has been moved now to August 30th... as they wouldn't allow me to fly for 6 weeks after.

Oh really? That's interesting as that's one of my pre-op questions. Unlikely to fly in August anyway, we've nothing booked. Waiting to see how recovery goes...

It's not really about "perfection". It's comfortable levels. Being able to use the toilet pain free, the itchiness it leaves making you feel unclean even though you are. About seeing blood when you wipe then feeling sore because you feel like you have to wipe so much. I really disagree with the doctors who say it's cosmetic.

EdgyCat · 08/07/2024 18:01

@ZZGirl and @phoebetinkerbelle Yes I had a google just now, I'm so sorry that you have had to suffer this.
I made my comment only in light of the Op being the thing that makes her self conscious, as on MN there is usually other stuff like boobs and stomach after childbirth and breastfeeding causing self consciousness, and I guess my sex life is so dull the beauty of my arsehole was never a concern because I wouldn't be in positions that put this area on show. But I now see it's not a minor issue to most of you, so sorry for any offence.

That's quite interesting as the worst flare up I've ever had was after a flight. My husband was adamant it was rich food but I was convinced it was the flight. I'll never fly again without him supplies.

oberst · 08/07/2024 20:43

I'm having a flare up at the moment and it's really making me push towards just going for it now. It's horrid. So swollen and itchy.

I guess I worry about it being before my wedding and just hope I'll be healed by that point. I don't want to be hobbling down the aisle's

halfshutknife · 08/07/2024 21:37

I had a bit of skin burned off (nice) from the other side 3 months before my wedding and I was terrified of the same thing. I did have complications but it healed within a week and I didn't regret it at all as I was so much comfier on the sag.

Oh to be female!

Trust me, (I can't speak for the OP) but the rest of my body is not perfect or matches up to today's beauty standards. I'd need lipo, a tummy tuck, boob lift and about 10 years worth of botox injected into me to look anything resembling what would be seen as "perfect" in today's world. Defo have other body issues too but having what essentially looks like a small scrotum that is very painful is my biggest hang up - most of the rest can be disguised by makeup, attractive lighting and the right underwear 😂

Hey!! How is your recovery?

I've got my op on Friday, to say I'm nervous is an understantement!!! 😂

Hey! I'm doing well! I am healing even though sometimes it looks like I'm not. I get uncomfortable when I'm sweating but otherwise I'm fine! You've completely got this!

Good thank you so far!! Op yesterday at 2pm, discharged around 5pm. Got one large haemmoroid removed which he thought was just a skin tag but had a haemmeroid in it and two smaller ones banded that were hiding under the big one so that's six in total with the two procedures! Yikes! Was a bit uncomfortable yesterday but find walking a little helps rather than sitting down and really recommend aloe vera for taking the sting/edge off. Had a look and all looks very normal down there at the moment which it hasn't looked like for a long time!

Making sure I'm staying on top of my painkillers, lactulose etc. eating loads of fibre and keeping clean down there with regular showers and sitz baths after BM's etc. Only had one BM so far and it was fine! Hoping it will keep be smooth sailing...
