That sounds horrid. Hope you are ok.

I’ve had this before OP, I’m sorry. The ng tube isn’t nice but once it’s in you shouldn’t be able to feel it (although I could when i swallowed). The ng tube shouldn’t be in more than a few days hopefully; my ileus was really painful and I was vomiting bile so the ng tube helped, then when it came out after a few days I tried eating and it stayed down so I was fine. I hope you’re okay.

silvershark22 · 04/05/2024 13:39

Thanks really not liking the way the tube fels my nose and eyes are constantly streaming and feel the bag pulls whebn i move. It was good when they drained it though

Am being encouraged to chew gum and walk but just want to lie verry still

I had an ileus after my C section. It’s painful and vomiting small bowel contents is horrible! Mine resolved after 24 hours, hope you feel better soon 💐

silvershark22 · 04/05/2024 15:24

Yes there is nothing quite like the vomit how long did it take to tresolve must be hard with a newborn!

I had an ileus after abdominal surgery last July. It lasted six days. I just walked and walked the corridors of the hospital to try and get things moving. I honestly thought I was never going to poo again.

Luckily mine resolved within 24 hours. But yes that first day I couldn’t even hold my baby, I was too ill. What operation did you have?

silvershark22 · 04/05/2024 20:22

I had an open gynae opp so verry like a csection cut and bowel was handled as endo removed.

Hoping things resolve quickly ckly as feeling weak and tired and trying to avoid opiat based pain killllers.

Sounds like a barium meal X Ray. Hopefully it will give a good picture of what’s going on. Poor you, it sounds utterly miserable. They need to give anti sickness meds at the same time as the painkillers, and everything needs to be IV.

silvershark22 · 05/05/2024 22:37

Tests didn't happen today hopefully tomorrow but am feeling better as had a clamp to stop the tube pulling

sounds more like gastrografin - can help with diagnosis and may also help to fix some problems.

Fingers crossed today, let us know if it goes ahead and how you get on.

My mum had one when she had her bladder removed. It lasted around five days. She was taken off solids, on fluids and her bowel did eventually "wake up" they did say it was quite common as a section of the bowel was removed and cleaned then used to attach the kidneys to the colostomy bag. Mobilisation helps but was difficult for her as shed also had a complete hysterectomy. Hopefully it will kick-start soon and this doesn't go on much longer for you, sending you get well wishes.

Hi OP - I’m so sorry to hear you’re suffering. I had bowel surgery in March and developed ileus immediately afterwards. It’s not pleasant, particularly feeling so sick and then having the tube inserted. I did feel better once they’d drained litres of green fluid off my stomach though! As others have said, the key is to move around as much as possible as that can help stimulate the bowel to work again. I was also told that chewing gum can help. In my case the ileus resolved within a few days once the bowel had had a chance to rest. Fingers crossed for you that you will be the same. I’m happy to answer any questions you may have as it was very recent for me and is still fresh in my mind!

Have had the gastriografin and have now opened my bowels a couple of times. Supposedly having xray soon bank holiday obvs not the best time.

Sounds like you are heading in the right direction, bowels open is a good sign.

silvershark22 · 07/05/2024 07:29

They took the tube out last night so hoping can mannage food and go home.

May have got too hopeful too quickly as have just been sick after a yogurt. For those of you with experience how quickly did your bowel get back to normal?
