Hip Pain

HereWeGo22 · 23/02/2024 19:45

Hi

So as the title suggests please can I get others experience of ongoing hip and kidney pain?

I'm hoping by asking this it will stop me from convincing myself I am dying! Though that sounds OTT my head is unfortunatley spiralling into worry as a cause can't be found.

I'm a single parent (dad not involved but on BC) to an small child with complex needs, so the fear of being unwell myself seems to peak when I have issues that persist.

I'll try to keep the background short, but I cant seem to pinpoint when exactly the pain started but know it was there from early January. I don't recall feeling much discomfort before Christmas but I cant remember. I also do not recalled having any injury. I'm 37, health generally OK, though I've been feeling extremely fatigued for around the last 18 months to 2 years.

I've noticed as I creep up in age my periods have become more heavy, painful and long, however they have always been apart every 4 weeks like clockwork. In January I experienced some irregular bleeding mid way between cycles. No chance of me being pregnant nor any STIs but these have been checked to eliminate them as a cause. I was checked at urgent care by request of my employer and was told due to my age it could be hormonal. I was also diagnosed with a water infection and prescribed antibiotics. I must have been in pain with my left side at this point as it was recommended I follow up with my Doctor which I did who has referred me for all sorts of scans and tests.
Bloods all fine, urine samples now all fine, a specific test have been done (the C one for ovarian cancer is it?) which was normal, no one seems to know what is going on but I am in so much pain. It's in my left hip bone area but my kidney area is extremely tender and uncomfortable. It feels severally bruised. Pain can range from stabbing, throbbing, burning, dull, itchy, sore. It bloody hurts and nothing is helping or relieving it.

I've come on to here as tonight it is particularly bad, feel very nauseous and I guess the unknown frightens me.

I have an xray on Tuesday, and been referred for a kidney scan and ultrasound including an internal which I'm waiting for. Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this?

Thanks for reading

My hip pain was agony for years (over twenty) to the point I couldn't sleep throughout the night, then I started taking 3,000 iu Vitamin D every day. Within 3 months it had eased, after 6 months it has gone. That was over two years ago now.

You say you have had bloods done, are your results at the lower end of the lab range, or middle?

EDIT - regarding the kidney pain, I'm glad you are getting a scan, as a uti can go upwards and hide in the kidney.

HereWeGo22 · 24/02/2024 17:51

Thanks for responding @Pixiedust1234 I didn't know that about a kidney infection. Just thought it was detected through urine.

I've just checked my bloods and they are all in the mid of the normal ranges. So it's not really telling me anything.

I will get on the vitamin D. I've take it for years, probably 6, and for some reason just stopped in December. Maybe that's contributed but the kidney area today is so tender

It could be a kidney infection. I'm surprised the GP hasn't treated/tested you for this. Good job that you're having scans but don't let your brain get carried away and imagine all sorts of things. It could also be an ovarian cyst.

Pixiedust1234 · 24/02/2024 18:08

I'm surprised they didn't offer you another course of antibiotics tbh. I think you need to contact someone (GP or 111) to ask if the uti could have gone into your kidney. If they say no, ask why not, as it's common enough.

Btw, your bleeding could be hormonal but if i was you, I would focus on the kidney pain.

HereWeGo22 · 24/02/2024 18:12

Sorry my urine has been screened 4 times since early January. The 1st time there was blood and proteins, 2nd time time it was too high in leucocytes so I've been treated twice with nitrofurantoin. The last 2 screenings have been normal

Urine tests are not accurate. Were these just the dip stick tests or did they send away a sample?

The urologist I saw said the tests (even lab tests) are only about 50% accurate. I don't understand how GPs still rely on them.

HereWeGo22 · 24/02/2024 18:16

That's interesting. So how else could they test?

OP posts:
Pixiedust1234 · 24/02/2024 18:20

If you are 100% certain it's not an infection then possibly it could be kidney stones. They can cause a urinary infection as part of symptoms. I'm guessing the scan will pick those up. You must feel so sore Flowers

HereWeGo22 · 24/02/2024 18:25

I did wonder about kidney stones but ruled them out as I was told the pain presents like labour/childbirth and though I'm really uncomfortable all the time I'm not at that level. Think I'd have passed out lol

It feels unbelievably sore today 😢

They can test by taking a fresh sample and looking at it through a microscope. But I tnink there's only one clinic that does this and its not on the NHS.

My urologist said that if I have symptoms of an infection to take antibiotics. No need to test the sample.

I ended up with chronic bladder pain as my GP wouldn't treat my UTIs as the (inaccurate) tests were "clear". Can you tell I'm still bitter about 3 years of constant pain?!

HereWeGo22 · 25/02/2024 15:06

The GP did refuse any more antibiotics telling me I will build up a resistance. It's been sent off to the lab twice, that's why

Hopefully the scans will get to the bottom of it.

HereWeGo22 · 25/02/2024 19:53

Hopefully but I really hope this pain stops sooner. Doesn't feel like in fully emptying my bladder at the moment

My sciatica causes hip pain (and ankle pain)

Pacifybull · 25/02/2024 19:57

I have hip pain- it’s caused by bone wear, bursitis and tendonitis.

At the risk of repeating myself... you know what that is a red flag waving symptom of. Add that to kidney pain...

If it gets worse please seek A&E help immediately.

Just how many different ones, over how many days have you had?

HereWeGo22 · 25/02/2024 20:23

I've had the nitro ones, twice for 3 days, about 3 weeks apart

Going to sound silly but eating is the only thing that is relieving the discomfort, then I am left feeling rubbish as I feel greedy

You need a different GP as they are talking rubbish. A second dose of three days worth for a hard to shift infection is not long enough, I would have expected a 5 day or 7 day course of a different type. I say "expected " as I'm not a medical person but that is how I have been treated by various GPs for difficult infections over the years. Not once have I been rationed when I've had an actual infection.

Thankfully you are having a scan in a couple of days - do not minimise any of your symptoms. Good luck Flowers

EDIT - admittedly neither of us had a uti but for comparison, my DD had an infection pre Christmas, 2 different antibiotics, both 3x a day for 7 days. Myself last week had one type 3x day for 7 day antibiotics.

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 25/02/2024 21:15

What is not having the feeling of an empty bladder a sign of?

What is not having the feeling of an empty bladder a sign of?

I haven't linked to any particular website but these three come up immediately if you google "bladder still feels full after peeing". However it is something I have always known pre Internet for uti's. I'm sure there are many other reasons too but considering OP has actually had a uti, I don't believe hers to have completely gone. But again, I'm not a medical person.

Feeling as if you need to pee right after you pee is a symptom of a urinary tract infection. It could also happen if you consume bladder irritants like alcohol, coffee, or chocolate.

Besides frequent urination, signs of a UTI include fever, a burning feeling when you pee, discolored urine and constantly feeling like you need to pee (even after peeing). You may also feel bladder pressure, or discomfort in your back or around your pelvis.

If a person has a constant urge to pee but nothing comes out when they go, they may have an infection or other health condition. If a person frequently needs to pee but little comes out when they try to go, it can be due to a urinary tract infection (UTI), pregnancy, an overactive bladder, or an enlarged prostate.

tedgran · 25/02/2024 21:32

I had a UTI a couple of years ago. The lovely locum GP gave me a seven day course of antibiotics, she said that the three day courses advised by the NHS were pointless as they wouldn't fully kill off the infection.

HereWeGo22 · 25/02/2024 22:58

I must admit I am disappointed. As last week u returned to the GP and she talked herself put of prescribing more antibiotics despite me saying I wanted to try. I just want the discomfort to be over
