Blood pressure tablet experiences

Hi all,
Just wondered if we could start a thread of people's experiences of BP tablets.
I've tried ramapril and currently on losartan potassium, both of which have been ok up until the 6 month mark and then I get awful muscle pain and prickly heat on my feet.
I know we're all different but hoping to find one that may suit me!

I'm on Candesartan and never had any issues like that. It's worth trying different types in the same class.
They all do different things, so people need different ones or combinations

I was on Rampiril but got the "Rampiril cough" so was switched to Candesartan and have been fine on that one, no obvious side effects.

system2319 · 22/02/2024 10:26

I have been on Ramipril and Amlodipine since last November. I had itchy marks appear on both feet, did mention this to the doctor but it was dismissed. I thought it might have been my new slippers irritating me, I did wash the slippers and the irritation has stopped so not sure which was the cause. I do tend to get swollen feet (common side effect of the Aml) if I sit down for too long but I seem to have that more under control.

EBearhug · 22/02/2024 10:29

I've been on Ramipril for a few years. I initially coughed, but that eased off after a couple of months or so.

The biggest thing that made a difference was changing managers at work...

mrskimsneakattack · 22/02/2024 10:29

On Ramipril for a few months and all seems to be OK, although I have been getting an irritating dry cough at night and hadn't realised it might be connected, I thought it was because the house is drier due to the central heating being on!

tobee · 22/02/2024 15:42

I've been on amlodipine, irbesartan and propanolol for years. Was on ramipril but got changed to amlodipine after a cough developed. I've got no known side effects. As in, not obviously linked to the meds.

My dsis found losartan made her throat feel odd and dm found ankle swelling since amlodipine.

My Dh has been on a whole panoply of meds for blood pressure for over a decade and has no side effects.

All of us now have good blood pressure control.

Choccymumma · 22/02/2024 19:21

I'm a bit frustrated with it now.
GP days I need a blood test to check my potassium levels aren't too high due to tablets as they can cause these symptoms.
Just did my BP to see what it is and it's as high as it was when I started. 149/91.

Amlodipine had horrible side effects for me - swollen feet and ankles and horrible weird dreams every night. Also persistent low level fatigue. I didn't realise how bad that was until I came off them.

Ramipril had no effect at all on my blood pressure so I wasn't on it for more than a couple of weeks but didn't notice anything in that time.

Currently on Lercanidipine. My feet swell a bit by the end of the day but nowhere near as badly. The fatigue is unrelenting though and I'm told probably won't go unless I come off them. I also get very dizzy spells for the first hour after taking the tablet and I really miss being able to eat grapefruit.

Fed up with all of it tbh.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 22/02/2024 19:35

Took ages to find one that suited me, I now take 2 low level doses of Lercapedanine and Losartan. Biggest difference was losing weight though. The side effects of Amlopodine were vile, I felt like I was being poisoned.

Malbecmoron · 22/02/2024 19:39

I started on Amlodipine but it made my ankles swell so now have that and a mixture of ramipril. I have had a cough for months and didn't realise it could be the ramipril!

gingercat02 · 22/02/2024 20:01

ACE (all the-prils) coughs are very well known. My mum had one for years, came off Ramipril, and it stopped immediately

Chewbecca · 22/02/2024 20:26

I'm on Lercanidipine. Apparently it's not the first choice of the GP but was chosen because it typically interacts better with painkillers I take (compared to others). My ankles have swollen which is unattractive but other than that, it seems to have worked well so I have stayed with it.
Feeling fairly determined to lose some weight at the moment so am ever hopeful about the possibility of stopping altogether one day. I've reduced my stress level a lot and increased activity.

thatneverhappened · 22/02/2024 20:28

I'm fine with Enalapril. Beta blockers make my legs feel weak when I exercise but I wouldn't be without it as I need it for anxiety as much as BP

bruffin · 22/02/2024 20:33

Amlodapine -headache and swollen ankles so changed to

Felodipine - ok no real side effects

For some reason diabetes consultant changed me to Ramipril which didnt work at all and BP was too high. Think she said it was more protective of my kidneys

I am now on Ramipril and Felodipine- I am very tired a lot of the time, sneezing and PND,

Hoplolly · 22/02/2024 20:37

I have Candesartan and Indapamide. Never noticed any side effects.

Moier · 22/02/2024 21:02

I'm on Amlodipine ..but not for BP problems..l have it for

Esophageal spasms...( Nutcracker) it's like having non cardiac pain..
I don't have any side effects at all.. and my spasms are less intense.. my blood pressure is now always on the low side.. but better than the pain.

DiveBombingSeagull · 22/02/2024 21:11

I started Amlodipine 6 weeks ago. My BP is down and the only side effect I had noticed was my face kept flushing bright red, but now having read other posts I have realised that I have had a cough (thought it was left over from a cold) and my ankles are a bit swollen.

I had extreme flushing too, it was like I was being boiled alive from the inside, it was awful.

Ifailed · 22/02/2024 21:23

I've been on Amlodipine for 3 years now. Yes have had a few problems with ankles but its bough me down from 218/127 to something more normal now so I'll take the inconvenience.

bellocchild · 22/02/2024 21:41

I'm on Bendroflumethiazide. It's an very old drug, but gives me no side effects, unlike some of the others. GP didn't think it would work, but it does.

grubblyplank · 22/02/2024 21:52

I was on amlodopine when pregnant-apparently it's a very old drug which works well in pregnancy? However, doesn't help with ankle swelling as a side effect of already pregnant swollen legs/ankles!

Currently on Lisinopril, Doxazosin a beta-blocker, bisoprolol. I've never had any issues with any of them although my brother is on rampiril and it's doing nothing at all ( except give him the cough)

bradpittsbathwater · 22/02/2024 22:25

Enalapril has never given me any adverse effects fortunately. I've been taking nifedipine recently and that makes my face flush but no other adverse effects. I had horrific headaches when I was given massive doses of it in hospital. Only on a low dose now. Beta blockers don't work for me as my heart rate is never that high. They just make me feel dizzy and have no effect on my blood pressure

Hoglet70 · 23/02/2024 08:09

DH been on Ramipril for quite a few years. No side effects. He has asthma anyway so coughs a lot, nothing to do with the drugs.

bruffin · 23/02/2024 09:47

I forgot Tinnitus from Ramipril, sounds like mediteranean night with crickets

purpleme12 · 23/02/2024 09:50

Haven't had any side effects
