Urine test results help - infection ?

dahliaaa · 05/01/2024 21:55

I haven't been able to get a GP appointment this week (surgery used to be brilliant but so difficult to get an appointment now.)
Anyway - ordered some urine strips to see if show up infection which was a stupid idea because now I don't actually know what the results mean BlushConfused
Leukocytes - 'large 500' (the furthest away from normal)
Billrubin - 17

Everything else looks normal. I've got some of the symptoms of UTI (urgency / discomfort / some burning / cloudy urine)

Drinking lots of water. Plus had the 'cystitis relief' powder for the last two days.

Phone 111 sounds like you have an infection

dahliaaa · 05/01/2024 22:06

Don't know if relevant but I'm about 3 years into menopause

Thanks for replying @Bluestripeddress
I don't feel particularly ill (no temp etc) just bit uncomfortable.

Start using vaginal oestregen cream eg ovestin ask for a prescription

dahliaaa · 05/01/2024 22:25

Thanks @cestlavielife I was thinking of asking for that anyway (if I can ever get an appointment)
Would that help treat a UTI if there is actually one - or is it more to try and prevent them ?

Leukocytes are white blood cells which are part of the body’s immune response, so a high level can indicate an infection. It does sound like you probably have one, but mild infections can often clear up on their own. If your symptoms persist for more than 3 days or get worse, you’ll probably need antibiotics to clear it up and prevent it potentially progressing to your kidneys, which would be more serious. Does your GP practice offer an online consultation form? That’s probably the best way to get any treatment you need, they might just ask you to drop a sample off. Hope that helps and you feel better soon!

Please call 111, infections don't go away on there own, you need antibiotics. Please take it from someone with a history of utis.

@BritishDesiGirl sounds like is good idea to take it seriously. I used to get them a lot but haven't had one for about 15 years

Thank you to everyone who gave advice. Rang 111 and they organised an out of hours appointment today. Dr said infection and has given me three days of anti biotics (nitrofurantoin)
Said to go to gp if this doesn't clear it.

I've one 1 tablet left to take in the morning from the 3 days of antibiotics so thought I would do another strip to see if anything changed.
Leukocytes are still showing but have reduced from large 500 to in between moderate 125 and small 70.
Everything else clear other than small amount of Bilirubin.

In terms of symptoms the urine isn't cloudy anymore (just a bright yellow colour from the ABs.) No stinging when I wee.
I've got some discomfort in right side but to be honest that could be completely unrelated as I've sometimes had it after gallbladder removal a few years ago.
No temperature etc.
Do I just leave it now as in the good old bad old days I wouldn't have had strips at home so wouldn't have even have known about removing leucocytes (a little knowledge is indeed a dangerous thing !)

Bluestripeddress · 08/01/2024 23:35

Bilirubin is not relevant. If you want my advice I would ask for more antibiotics and play on it a bit. I think it’s very damaging just giving 3 days of antibiotics as it often doesn’t cure the uti, just causes resistanence.

Bluestripeddress · 08/01/2024 23:35

Resistance

dahliaaa · 08/01/2024 23:50

Thanks @Bluestripeddress
I'll ignore the Billrubin.
That’s interesting re the 3 day antibiotics.
I havent had uti’s for a while but used to get them when I was younger and I’m sure I was always given 7 days (?)

ANP2020 · 09/01/2024 00:16

Hey

Nitro is always prescribed for 3 day course, no extension to it. If your still worried ask GP to send a sample to labs they’ll advise if abx still needed and which antibiotic it would respond to. X

dahliaaa · 09/01/2024 07:36

Today is officially last day of ABs so will see how I am today

HalfasleepChrisintheMorning · 09/01/2024 17:59

Agree with this. The men who make these guidelines aren’t the ones stuck with chronic UTIs!
I now have Hiprex and nitrofuratonin on reapeat. I take Hiprex daily and nitro for 3 days after sex. Any symptoms and I would take a week’s worth at least. This is on the advice of a urologist.

dahliaaa · 09/01/2024 21:33

Took last antibiotic this morning.
Actually felt ok at work today about from some very mild discomfort in right side. Tonight just out of interest did another urine test and still showing leukocytes. Everything else clear and no temperature etc.
If I didn't have the tests I would just have assumed all ok.

Get gp to prescribe ovestin.
Every woman should be offered it routinely at first sign of menopausal uti
It cured all my uti symptoms and keeps them at bay.
And would have saved months of anti bios and referrals and scans and tests etc

Absolutely this. I suffered for years. Ovestin has been like a miracle for me x
