Has anyone has dental implants and if so, how much did they cost and was it painful / protracted process?

I lost a few teeth in my mid-20s due to a face injury and have had a denture since. I'm just wondering if it's time to upgrade!

My 2 front teeth are implants, cost me about £6k I think.
Process took about 3 months I think- implant is put in first then has to heal before teeth are attached to it. Im sure it was painful/ uncomfortable at the time but not memorable now.
So much better than having a denture!

Do it. Get a few quotes and pick the dentist you have the best rapport with.

Don't get a cheap option or get it done abroad because there will be aftercare. You will be going for checkups, and going back to have the 'teeth' attached. It takes a few weeks.

It's about £1.5 - 2k per implant as a rough guide. I have a few.

You use your mouth to speak, smile, eat, drink, taste, sing, kiss etc. And you wear your teeth 24 hours a day.

Was it painful? No, not really. Had some done under sedation, and that was a bit sore for about a day. Had some done under local anaesthetic and about the same. I was given painkillers but didn't need them.

If you have it done under sedation, you will need to be accompanied so that you can get home safely.

Thanks for the responses! I will need 3 and they are front teeth so very obvious. Probably irrational but one of my biggest fears is them breaking or falling out and being toothless even if temporarily.

I've got an appointment to discuss implants in a couple of weeks but don't know the dentist. I don't suppose you had treatment in London? If so, do you have recommendations.

What did you have whilst the implant was healing and before the tooth went on?

I think I had a denture. I had a front bridge. It was quite a while ago.

I just continued using my dentures whilst the implant was healing- I was offered crowns by the dentist which are basically temporary fake teeth but I was worried about them coming out & felt safer with my dentures (that i'd already bern using for afew months).

My DB visited today and I knew he had had an implant. Turns out he had an upper and lower bridge of them, four teeth on the top and six on the bottom. They look fabulous and very natural (he chose a natural colour and shape), but he did say he had to have numerous extractions and spent nine hours in the chair with only one short break. The temps were in for a few months before the permanent teeth.

no idea what he paid but he borrowed some on his mortgage for them, I reckon at least 10k.

After 10 years with a denture for 2 front teeth I recently had it replaced with a double implant and is it honestly the best thing I have ever done! It took about 6 months, with the denture filling the gap until the final stage. It cost just over £4k and I didn’t have a moment of pain throughout the entire process (other than the numbing injections obviously).

I had a front top tooth implant about 20 years ago, so happy I had it done, have not had a single problem with it, touch wood

Just make sure to go to a specialist rather than abroad

I had two implants last year at the top back. Including extraction of a broken tooth it cost £4800. I had to have a bone graft too and stitches in for 3 weeks. Not the most pleasant of experiences, and the whole process took 4 months. I’m really thrilled with the final results and have no regrets.

What is double implant please?Is it 2 teeth on 1 implant or 2 separate implants? I have 2 front teeth denture and looking to get implants in 2025, my bone hasn't grown back yet,so not possible now.

Did they have any issues with bone growth? I've had my dentures a long time so wonder if I'll have enough bone / strong enough bone to fit an implant.

My DH will be getting an implant in the spring and his very good dentist has recommend a ceramic implant that is all done and dusted in one appointment. No waiting times, the new tooth can be attached immediately. From what I’ve read they cause fewer allergic reactions and heal better than traditional implants. They’re more expensive but apparently the gold standard if you are a suitable candidate.

Hi - I have had my two implants done by Dr Firas Daoudi in London - I thoroughly recommend him. One implant is about ten years old and no problems. More recently, I think I paid around 3k. Just so you know, I had a bit of a black eye for the upper implant, as it bled internally upwards - it didn’t hurt, but I understand this can happen sometimes - all healed up after a couple of days and no subsequent problems.

You might need a graft, they will usually refer you for a ct scan to see what bone you have. It's a long process.

That sounds unpleasant! And yeah it also sounds like a lengthy process which I wasn't anticipating

@FLOWER1983 My double implant is 2 teeth on one post.

Realised I didn’t explain mine 100% accurately, one was from a tooth that had to be removed 10 years ago and one was a recent removal of a previous root canal that was failing. The single denture was swapped for a double after that came out while the implant process was done.

@kirinm The above is probably relevant to your question. Bone from the original lost tooth was just about ok but they decided it was safer to put the post in the latest extraction area next to it and did a small bone graft as well, just for added strength. The bone graft is actually much simpler than it sounds. They use artificial bone material these days and just add it as part of the citing of the post process.

I cracked my upper front right tooth during Labour (tongue piercings are not cool kids) and was never really happy with the composite fix so got my implant about 5/6 years ago now, cost about 3k all in, that was including composite on other tooth, ct, bone graft, whitening etc. Took about 5 months I think. Tooth out the week before xmas, bone graft in Feb or March and implant in May or june

was THE best money I've ever spent. was also THE least painful (apart from emotionally) dental procedure I've ever had, they use the numbing gel so don't even feel the injections. Front teeth are so easy as you don't need to keep your jaw open the whole time.

The only thing that bothers me is I can't brush it with my electric brush as the vibration makes me sneeze, so need to swap to a manual brush for that tooth. Oh and when im unwell and my gums are pale you can see the slightly dark post in my gun line, have big lips so no one else can see it.

don't worry about it breaking, they give it a good ding with a metal tool at the end to make sure it's nice and secure. I suspect they'll do the 3 teeth on just one plate for you.

Grafts aren't remotely unpleasant. It's just powder bone so no real faffing about, takes about 10 mins at most. Mind was done as a precautionary as I was a smoker at the time.

I had a graft, it wasn't unpleasant particularly but I had to wait for the graft to integrate before the implants could be put in. Firstly see the specialist and get a scan yhen you should know what can be done.

Thank you for explaining. I had my 2 teeth out a few months ago after failed root canals , huge cyst removal and extensive infection. Currently implants impossible due to bone loss, even bone graft isn't possible, i have an appointment in 10 months to see if ther is any progress so i am gathering information, didn't know 2 teeth on one implant were possible.

They can take bone from ribs to craft a real bone graft ,that's obviously VERY extreme and it's gonna be costly.

Our neighbour has had mouth cancer twice, his most recent bout means he has just 2 Implant posts into both cheek bones that hold essentially a upper denture without the roof of the mouth bit.

I had one done about 7 years ago. I can't remember the exact price but around £2.5k. I paid the £1.5k on an interest-free loan via the dental surgery. Had no problems at all.
