What is the WORST pain you've ever had?

Apart from labour

I’ve had some pretty nasty migraines that were more painful than my 2 c section recoveries!

What’s the worst pain you’ve ever been in & how long did it last?

OP posts:
TartanBelle · 05/12/2023 23:11

Tooth infection that spread to my jaw...
The pain! Like a drill in my head, it was totally relentless. I was pacing the bedroom all night. And the worst thing, the dentist told me to take paracetamol!

I'd actually say it was worse than childbirth with no epidural. And that was pretty bad...

And then migraines - pain so intense, I can't sleep to get away from them, even for a few minutes. Absolutely awful.

Shopper727 · 05/12/2023 23:13

Kidney stones
horrible I’ve had 4 kids and that was nothing compared to ks which I’ve had many times, agony my friend had gall stones and that sounds horrible too. I had major maxillo facial surgery that was zero compared to kidney stones.

Me too.

I was 17 and my mum just kept telling me to take a paracetamol and go to bed.

This
I was in hospital for 10 days and they basically knocked me out forcthe first few days because it was so horrendous and I kept vomiting.

I thought I was going to die.

Broken vertebrae in my back was hideous too

Wendyspotatopeeler · 05/12/2023 23:15

Pilonidal Sinus.

Felt like a thousand knives digging into the base of my spine every time I moved. Couldn't sleep or sit for days. Had it 3 times before it was finally surgically removed under GA.

Kidney infection was definitely the second but it was waves so easier to manage. Labour comes in 3rd, which was worse when induced and in the drip.

Allthegoodusernamesareused · 05/12/2023 23:19

Gallbladder attack. Although after it was removed, the pain in my incisions caused by violently vomiting was nearly as bad!

starlightcan · 05/12/2023 23:20

Probably back pain (it sounds so innocuous… I had no idea).

Just one day it went (following poor habits during lockdown probs). Couldn’t move, absolute agony trying to walk. The worst was when someone tried to move me… was literally lying on the floor screaming out in pain with zero bandwidth available to even think about how spooky it must have sounded to the neighbours 🙈😆

After that probably having an epidural, although that was also something to do with the quality of the pain as much as the intensity.

Colonoscopy also would not wish to repeat. I considered cancelling the second (needed) one as I was absolutely dreading it. SO painful.

Natsku · 05/12/2023 23:25

Hydronephrosis and appendicitis at the same time, while pregnant with a baby kicking the affected areas constantly. I actually begged the doctors in the hospital to kill me because it hurt so bad.

cockwomble73 · 05/12/2023 23:26

I get excruciating hip pain when sat in the car for any longer than half an hour. Not sure if it's bursitis or sciatica but I end up having to sit sideways with my weight on the other side.

Letsnotargue · 05/12/2023 23:27

Appendicitis that flared up 3 times over about a year before it finally erupted. The pain made me dizzy and my ears ring, I couldn’t stand up. It was so visceral I immediately knew it was something bad. And then the morphine made me throw up so I had to make do with paracetamol.

Dental abscess second to that. Like a PP I was relieved to have the short-notice root canal and would happily have that done again as I found it completely fine.

LuluBlakey1 · 05/12/2023 23:36

Acute pancreatitis- caused by gallstones getting trapped in a tube from the pancreas and blocking it. Pancreas starts to digest itself because digestive enzymes can't escape. It was absolutely agonising. Terrifying pain. Worse than any of the 3 childbirths I have been through. I could only have enough morphine to control it for 2 hours at a time and then I sobbed until the next dose. Hospitalised for 8-9 days until stones shifted out of tube, and I was in pain and discomfort for 6 weeks afterwards until inflammation subsided and gall bladder was removed. Consultant said it is the most painful thing anyone ever experiences. I hope so. I can't imagine how it could get worse.

Floopyfloop · 06/12/2023 00:26

It’s a toss up between Gallstones and an Oreo-antral fistula

I also have endo so I am in constant pain

PToosher · 06/12/2023 00:36

Gallbladder infection and slipped disc were bad.
But nothing compares to the cluster headaches. I had a cluster of 4 months, 3 hours minimum every night of agonising headache. Basically your brain turns the pain up to 11 for some unknown reason, same time every day. Eventually controlled with Verapamil and hasn't returned. Touch wood.

TerrysChocolateOrange · 06/12/2023 00:37

Throat cancer, that required chemo and radio in tandem, I was on morphine through a feeding tube and fentanyl patches at the same time.

Breast cancer was a walk in the park after that.

ItAintGonnaGoDownEasyIfItAintCheezy · 06/12/2023 00:38

Cluster headaches.

FluffletheMeow · 06/12/2023 00:50
  1. Toothache
  2. Broken finger (bent at a right angle sideways)
  3. Earache
  4. Childbirth / period pains. (Bad periods)
  5. Pneumonia (not more painful then childbirth, but definitely painful, and much more scary and unpleasant)

Witnessed a broken ankle. That looked pretty bad.

CleanerExpectations · 06/12/2023 01:21

In order:

  1. Acute Pancreatitis
  2. Gallstone attacks
  3. Tooth abscess
  4. Burst ear drum/the infection that caused it
  5. Manual extraction of clots after childbirth
  6. Medication free childbirth

Would take a normal childbirth over and over rather than any of the previous 5.

Banana1979 · 06/12/2023 01:40

Severe sciatic pain it has no rival
I’ve been in labour I’ve broken a bone I’ve had my gallbladder out I’ve had so many different types of pain but that tops it

to put it into context. Sciatic pain is so painful that when you sneeze, you have to turn your head to face the ceiling so that you’re not in agony.

I went to a market once, and I was completely stuck in position and had to be carried home. It was absolutely awful. I wouldn’t wish that pain on my worst enemy. I’m currently on the waiting list for a spinal steroid injection.
oh, and as someone else said, a colonoscopy, I would rather my finger be amputated and go through that again

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 06/12/2023 02:43

Gallstones by far the worst pain ever for me, I googled the pain symptoms and found Mumsnet, many years ago now.

Bluelightbaby · 06/12/2023 03:28

Broken ribs - awful !

urinating with vaginal stitches !!

GlamGiraffe · 06/12/2023 03:47

Severely frozen shoulder which was compounded by a nerve becomming injured where the Capsule had contracted and thickened so extremely it was crushing it. I had 4 hydrodilations without anaesthetic as I'm allergic to the one they needed to use, plus a procedure where they pass something like a knitting needle through the nerve in between the holes in the shoulder blade. Apparently this all should have been beyond unbearable.. ot was absolutley nothing compared to the frozen shoulder. I was in ecruciating agony with every breath and in the end couldn't move at all. Worst thing ever.
Beyond horrific.

lizjsw · 06/12/2023 09:45

Noseyoldcow · 04/12/2023 23:13

Don't want to say in case I jinx myself and get something worse!

This!

Goatymum · 06/12/2023 13:38

A few…
I have Raynaud’s and my nerves in little finger are so sensitive if I bang it even lightly it’s excruciating- makes me feel nauseous. It’s an annoying ‘side effect’ of the condition apparently.
A few years ago I had terrible back pain that usual painkillers weren’t touching, dh had some horse-strength stuff left from a wisdom tooth extraction so I took them In the night as was so desperate! They worked 😆
Also many years ago had a horrific headache one evening- went to bed and had to call dh on phone to come up and bring water/painkiller as even turning over killed. Never had such a bad one since. V odd.
And def Labour after being induced - went from 0 to begging for epidural v quickly!

Goatymum · 06/12/2023 14:01

alltoomuchrightnow · 05/12/2023 01:37

I have passed out many times from trapped wind too..really has been that painful! Not for years thankfully

I have too, I had a phase of getting it a few years ago but only passed out once. It’s prob to do with the vasal nerve.

spiderlight · 06/12/2023 14:06

Palindromic arthritis. I had a massive spate of it travelling from joint to joint for months - the episodes in my hips were probably the worst, but it was all pretty horrific, and definitely worse than childbirth. I've also had some migraines that were in the same league.

LadyDanburysHat · 06/12/2023 14:07

Passing a gallstone. Horrific.
