A&E for swollen leg?

Aibu really to go to A&E for my leg?
I have varicose veins and I'm on the list for removal as they have been causing eczema recently.
Past few days I've had terrible cramps in my leg, I thought maybe my car seat was too far forward as it was most noticable when driving so I moved it back to today but it's continuing. I had to put the heating on my feet in the car earlier because it was so cold it was almost numb.

Anyway, I'm a little concerned as my leg has gotten much more swollen than usual, it's always a little bigger but even my husband has commented this afternoon. It is also freezing and my toes are going purple as if it's really cold! My leg and foot are very cold though. So could be that!

I should add I have been to A&E once about the same leg back when I had COVID last year and no clot. Today, I'm concerned about a DVT. But I don't want to waste time or be embarrassed about going again about the same leg! Not feeling particularly anxious about it but if it's really really urgent I'd rather go now in the daylight rather than wait till it gets worse or something tonight. If it can wait for GP I'll wait but I'm really unsure on this one.

I've attached a photo of the difference in my legs.
Can it wait till the GP tomorrow?

I would go to a&e with that.

Are your legs usually the same size as each other? If so, go to A&E

Cupsoftea0009 · 05/11/2023 13:58

One leg is always a little swollen from the varicose veins but never like this!

You do need medical attention. An untreated DVT or untreated cellulitis can turn very nasty very quickly, so they need ruling out or treating immediately. Even if it's 'only' phlebitis you will require antibiotic treatment.

Personally, having had a DVT that became a pulmonary embolism and nearly finished me off, I'd be going to A&E to be checked out especially on a Sunday afternoon.

SeaToSki · 05/11/2023 14:12

If there is a different temp or skin colour from one leg to the other, or top to bottom of the leg, it classes as a ‘seek medical attention today’ kind of thing. If you have a minor injuries clinic near you that is open today, you could try there as well..but I think you need it looked at sharpish

endofthelinefinally · 05/11/2023 14:17

Definitely go to A&E with that. ASAP.

2strappinglads · 05/11/2023 14:19

Does it feel warm to the touch? I had a dvt in my calf last year, was swollen and warm to the touch

Cupsoftea0009 · 05/11/2023 14:20

It's not warm, it's very cold to touch. My DH thinks I should wait till GP opens tomorrow :/ I don't know what's for the best

Ring 111

Manadou · 05/11/2023 14:22

DH had exactly this, he has varicose veins and eczema, one swollen leg, turned out to be a DVT. Now on Apixaban. Don't leave it.

endofthelinefinally · 05/11/2023 14:22

The veins in that foot are swollen, which is a potential sign of dvt. Better to go and get it checked than leave it and end up with a pulmonary embolism.

SirVixofVixHall · 05/11/2023 14:24

Agree with everyone else, better safe than sorry, definitely worth getting it checked out today.

endofthelinefinally · 05/11/2023 14:25

What specialist medical training does DH have?
(I am a retired nurse/ midwife with many years experience specialising in thrombosis and clotting).

SM4713 · 05/11/2023 14:26

A&E- I'm not normally one to suggest it.

OdeToBarney · 05/11/2023 14:30

I too would be worried about a DVT and would be getting seen today. My DM has had two DVTs.

Cupsoftea0009 · 05/11/2023 15:04

Thanks all. I'm heading over to A&E now. Hopefully the wait won't be too long!

Good luck OP, let us know how you get on Flowers

Cupsoftea0009 · 05/11/2023 20:57

Thanks all, they suspect a blood clot and have given me blood thinners and I'll have a scan tomorrow. Thanks for your encouragement 💐

overwhelmed2023 · 05/11/2023 21:04

Is it not an option to see on call GP via 111? They can't diva scan until tomorrow anyway donuts a case of assessment and possible anti coagulation until the Doppler scan is done

overwhelmed2023 · 05/11/2023 21:12

But if not AE can deal with it and assess do bloods and give clexane if they think

overwhelmed2023 · 05/11/2023 21:14

Sorry Apixaban

SM4713 · 05/11/2023 21:20

Thanks for the update OP. You made the right decision to go tonight. What is DH saying now, seeing as he suggested waiting till the GP tomorrow? 🙄
Wishing you a speedy recovery Flowers
