A&E for swollen leg?

Cupsoftea0009 · 05/11/2023 13:53

Aibu really to go to A&E for my leg?
I have varicose veins and I'm on the list for removal as they have been causing eczema recently.
Past few days I've had terrible cramps in my leg, I thought maybe my car seat was too far forward as it was most noticable when driving so I moved it back to today but it's continuing. I had to put the heating on my feet in the car earlier because it was so cold it was almost numb.

Anyway, I'm a little concerned as my leg has gotten much more swollen than usual, it's always a little bigger but even my husband has commented this afternoon. It is also freezing and my toes are going purple as if it's really cold! My leg and foot are very cold though. So could be that!

I should add I have been to A&E once about the same leg back when I had COVID last year and no clot. Today, I'm concerned about a DVT. But I don't want to waste time or be embarrassed about going again about the same leg! Not feeling particularly anxious about it but if it's really really urgent I'd rather go now in the daylight rather than wait till it gets worse or something tonight. If it can wait for GP I'll wait but I'm really unsure on this one.

I've attached a photo of the difference in my legs.
Can it wait till the GP tomorrow?

Glad you went, it looks like mine that was dvt
One 10cm bigger than the other...i left it too long before going. Blood thinners are fine.

Thanks all, they suspect a blood clot and have given me blood thinners and I'll have a scan tomorrow. Thanks for your encouragement 💐

so glad you went

Is it not an option to see on call GP via 111? They can't diva scan until tomorrow anyway donuts a case of assessment and possible anti coagulation until the Doppler scan is done

She's been and gone and updated us.

She needed A&E.

Hope that everything is straightforward today OP.

Hi all,

Thank you for your kind words.

They couldn't find a DVT thankfully!! Put it down to varicose veins/venous insufficiency. I'm going to go to my GP. Although I've woken this morning with absolutely excruciating pain when I breathe in in my upper back. The hospital asked if I had chest pain so I'm wondering if related, although I assume I don't still need to consider that if no DVT and it's in my back anyway!

Sorry for going on! Just came on to say a big thank you to those who replied:)

Hi!

It's probably unrelated, but I would suggest you go back - sorry! You can get a pulmonary embolus from a clot that travels from the back of your leg. It would cause extreme breathlessness and possibly pain.

So I know it's such a faff but do go!

hannahwaddinghamsbiceps · 07/11/2023 07:38

Chest pain like that with your other symptoms is definitely worth going back today.
My DH had similar and was told it was pleurisy. It wasn't , it was a PE.

Swimeveryday · 07/11/2023 07:44

You need to get checked for a PE go back to A and E.

I had a very swollen leg about 10 years ago, and it turned out to be an infection which they treated with IV antibiotics (in hospital for a weekend). When it happened more recently, I assumed it was the same thing again, but the GP insisted on checking for a DVT. Which it was. Phlebitis was another possibility.

TeaTurtle · 07/11/2023 07:45

Go back to A&E asap with that kind of chest pain and your history. They need to investigate you for pulmonary embolism. I know you won’t want to go (who does) but you must Flowers

Cupsoftea0009 · 07/11/2023 07:48

It is actually excruciating and I am considering ringing the GP at 8 today. Even though I feel very silly and like a hypochondriac! I can't really do to A&E today or not now anyway as I have 2DC here with me and no childcare.
It's that it's so painful that's concerning me.
My DH isn't being particularly supportive either which is making me doubt myself but I think since what happened on the weekend I will at least call.

I think your husband needs to come and take care of the children and you need to go back to A&E!
Better to be safe than sorry.

Jitterybugs · 07/11/2023 08:12

I agree you need to be seen again urgently. There was a specific reason why you were asked in A&E if you had chest/back pain. You now have it and it will be a symptom of concern to them and needs checked.

Cupsoftea0009 · 07/11/2023 08:33

I've got a nurse appointment at the GP in about 20 minutes after I rang at 8. I'll explain what happened at the weekend to them and how I feel now. Thank you all. Hopefully they'll sort something for me today.

Good luck. Your H is an arse btw Flowers

Cupsoftea0009 · 07/11/2023 09:38

I saw the nurse who spoke to the doctor. They've sent me to hospital to some sort of assessment unit. Thankfully not a&e so at least I don't have to wait hours. Just trying to arrange some childcare so I can go. Thanks again.

Clots can travel from legs to lungs and cause back pain. You most certainly need to be seen today, don't let anyone fob you off, let us know what's happening op
